This study has been carried out to survey the community structure of aquatic insects in the Tamjin River from October, 1981 to August, 1982. Quantitatively collected materials are classified and dominance indices, diversity indices, similarity indices, according to each sites and seasons are mathematic analyzed and to determine the water quality by diversity indices. The results are as follows: 1. The aquatic insect fauna of the Tamjin River is composed of total 93 species, 54 genera, 30 families in 7 orders. 2. Common speices from all the site are 12 species and native species from each site are 24 species. 3. Composition of aquatic insect fauna according to insect order is as follows: Ephemeroptera 44 species, 16 genera in 9 families. Coleoptera 13 species, 10 genera in 6 families. Trichoptera 13 species, 8 genera in 5 families. Plecoptera 9 species, 9 genera in 4 families. Odonata 4 species, 4 genera in 1 families. Megaloptera 3 species, 2 genera in 1 families. 4. Component ratio of the number of individuals according to the insect orders is as follows: Ephemeroptera 68.0% Trichoptera 10.8% Diptera 8.9% Coleoptera 7.4% Plecoptera 4.4% Odonata 0. 6% 5. Epeorus curvatulus is a dominant species in the Tamjin River and Choroterpes trifurcata, Hydropsyche ulmeri, Potamantus sp. nb., Mateopsepheuus japouicus, and Ecdyouurus yoshidae are to make up the greatest population. Dominant indices of this River are 0.269 to 0.584. 6. Diversity indices represent 3.114 in the Tamjin River. 7. Similarity is very high at mid stream, and shows more high similarity between mid stream and lower stream than upper stream. 8. The biological estimation of upper stream of the Tamjin River`s water quality based on diversity indices is oligosaprobic zone and lowor stream belongs to β-mesosaprobic zone.

To assess and monitor the degree of marine pollution, the sediment samples were collected in Yellow Sea and Kwangyang bay and conducted bioassay and analysis for the physical/ chemical environmental parameters. Sea urchin (Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus) embryo bioassay was conducted in order to evaluate and map the pollution station of sea sediments. The results were shown a severe inhibitory effect on the embryo bioassay of sediments collected in Kwangyang bay as compared with Yellow Sea. The correlationships between the embryos and the environmental parameters (COD, ammonia, nitrite level) were investigated by simple correlation analysis. After insemination, the correlation coefficient value (r) on the normal embryos observed at 48 hours (-0.8321) was the highest in ammonia level but very low values in COD, Nitrite.

1. The present work is to make a standing crops of aquatic insects in the main stream of the Yeong-san River including its upper streams; the Go-su, the Hwang-yong, the Ji-suk and the Gwang-ju. Investigations were carriedout four times; October 26, ` 72 ; May 26-27, ` 73 and June 2, ` 73. 2. Seven separate station were selected, and collected two fold in each station. 3. 6 Orders and 42 Species wereidentified: Ephemeroptera: 26 spp., Odonata: 1 spp., Plecoptera: 3 spp., Trichoptera: 6 spp., Coleoptera: 3 spp. and Diptera: 3 spp. 4. The Standing crops of aquatic insects of the Yeong-san River were shown in Table 2. The results were as follows; 1) The individual numbers were ranged from 22 to 408. 2) Total weight was ranged from 41.6mg to 6,021.4mg. 5. Mataeopsephenus japonicus and Hydropsyche sp. KA were dominant species in all the stations. 6. Of all standing crops in 7 stations, Coleoptera. has the greatest value.

This study was conducted to provide environmental assessment method to the effect of chemical using aquatic model ecosystem. Microcosm is one of the culture system containing three species bioorganism, Chlorella vulgaris as a producer, Cyclidium glaucoma as a consumer, Psendomonas putida as a decomposer. This system is very simple, stable small-size ecosystem and shows high reproductivity and reflectivity to the natural ecosystem. It is purposed for evaluating 1) analysis method of population fluctuation, 2) culture condition, based on characteristics of individual species that selected from natural water. In order to investigate what variation bring out in the system after addition of cadmium in the culture system, population fluctuation was analyzed. When each species cultured in microcosm containig cadmium, it began to be affected by Cd 50 ㎎/ℓ Chlorella vulgaris, 0.5 ㎎/ℓ Cyclidium glaucoma, 5.0 ㎎/ℓ Pseudomonas putida in early time of culture.

Aquatic insects were researched from 18 sites in the Yongsan River System from August, 1988 to July, 1989. The monthly distribution and distributional pattern of the aquatic insects according to the environmental factors were investigated. Sensitivity, tolernace range and pollution tolerance index associated with each species were investigated. Also in order to use as a indicator organism, 36 species were selected and optimal BOD value and realtive frequencies of occurence were computed and examined. Polution tolerance indicies of mayflies ranged from 0.5∼5, stonflies from 0 to 2, caddisflies from 0 to 3.5, beetles from 1.5 to 3.5 and flies from 0 to 5. Chironomus showed the highest optimal BOD value of 23.7㎎/ℓ, and at that concentration the realtive frequency was 48.7, but it was represented by from 0.8 to 12.7㎎/ℓ and 17.4 to 57.2% in other species. Bioindicators were Drunella aculea, D. criptomeria of Ephemeroptera, Yoraperla KUa, Pteronarcys sacchalina, Archynopteryx KUa, Perlodes sp., Megarcys ochracea, Kiotina decorata, Sweltsa nikkoensis, Taenionema KUa, T. CUa of Plecoptera, Rhyacophila of Trichoptera, Tipula, Eriocera and Anthoca of Diptera in Ⅰ degree, and Serratella rufa and Chironomus in Ⅳ degree of water quality.

The factor analysis was applied to examine the effects of enviromental conditions on microbial populations in Kwangyang Bay from February to December, 1990. For this purpose, 17 abiotic and biotic parameters were determined for samples obtained from fifteen sites. Ecosystem in Kwangyang bay was regulated by 5 factors for four season. The microbial population was influenced mainly by the inflow fresh water, nitrogenous nutrients and water temperature. The overall size of microbial population was greater than that obtained in 1982.

To understand the water quality of Chuam dam and Isa-Chun darn, and to help possible prediction of its future, various physio-chemical environmental factors and algal growth potential of the two reservoirs were surveyed eight times from October, 1988 to July, 1990. Each surveyed physico-chemical factors showed seasonal variations; the water temperature varied from 2℃ to 32℃, pH from 5.20 to 8.90, dissolved oxygen from 5.15㎎/ℓ to 12.96㎎/ℓ, and the COD from 0.033㎎/ℓ to 4.85㎎/ℓ. The BOD variation was similar to that of the COD. The concentrations of ammonia (NH_3^+-N), nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate were ND (< 0.0005㎎/ℓ) - 2.82㎎/ℓ, ND (<0.0005㎎/ℓ) - 0.533㎎/ℓ, ND (<0.0005㎎/ℓ) - 2.82 ㎎/ℓ, ND (<0.0005㎎/ℓ) - 0.031㎎/ℓ and ND (<0.0005㎎/ℓ) - 2.0㎎/ℓ, respectively. Individual number of Selenastrum capricorum Prinz in these reservoirs was used to study algal growth potential of the reservoirs. The number varied from 0.5×10 exp (4)/㎎ to 639.0×10 exp (4)/㎎. The potential was appeared to be restricted by the phosphate concentr ation and this effect was especially noticeable during summer.
