In this study, model tests were performed for performance evaluation of a wave energy converter of Wavestar type with a hydraulic system. To perform the model test, the wave energy converter of 1/10 scale ratio was used, and the evaluations for the performance of the wave energy converter were carried out in regular, white noise and irregular waves. The hydraulic PTO system having orifice was applied, and 1st energy conversion efficiencies were estimated in fixed PTO loads. In this study, real-time model tests with a numerical simulation were additionally performed using Real-time hybrid method because a scale effect between hydraulic PTO loads of the model and full-scale can be. From the experimental results, the scale effect for 1st energy conversion efficiency and the new model test technique are suggested to evaluate a wave energy converter.

A series of model tests was performed to evaluate the survivability of an articulated tower-type buoy structure under harsh environmental conditions. The buoy structure consisted of three long pipes, a buoyancy module, and top equipment. The scale model was made of acrylic pipe and plastic with a scale ratio of 1/22. The experiments were carried out at the ocean engineering basin of KRISO. The performance of the buoy structure was investigated under waves only and under combined environmental conditions from sea state (SS) 5 to 7. A nonlinear time-domain numerical simulation was conducted using the mooring analysis program OrcaFlex. The survivability of the buoy was analyzed based on three factors: the pitch motion, submergence of the top structure, and anchor reaction force. The model test results were directly compared to the results of numerical simulations. The effects of the sea state and combined environment on the performance of the buoy structure were investigated.

In the arrayed-buoy wave energy converter, a plurality of rotors is disposed on a platform having a long shape in the width direction, thereby making it possible to construct a device having various power generation capacities and sizes. In this study, the change of wave response according to the included angle was experimentally analyzed with respect to the 1 MW arrayed-buoy wave energy converter. The natural period of the platform was analyzed by free decay model test and the wave motions are measured and compared according to the included angle of 150°, 120° and 90° under the head sea and beam sea wave conditions. Through this study, the necessity of shape control in terms of power generation performance and structural safety was confirmed and we will perform platform motion performance evaluation considering rotor motion in the future.
