Cast-in-place concrete pile heads are currently being installed with a margin. This is to compensate for a reduction in quality of the pile as a result of stabilizer liquid, mixing mud and laitance after consolidation to the height of design. Currently, no standard exists to confirm if the upper section of the pile is of satisfactory quality through the removal of the pile head. This is leading to the likelihood that low quality piles are being constructed in the field. In this study, in order to manage quality, cast-in-place concrete piles are compared through both non-destructive and destructive tests to the height of each head. This paper is a proposal of test procedures to confirm the quality of pile heads that are within the appropriate range, while minimizing extensive breaking to the pile or ground disturbances. These procedures will thereby improve the reliability and quality of case-in-place concrete piles through revised specification.

The dynamic characteristics of natural rubber bearings, which are used as isolator, are dependent on the main rubber's dynamic behaviors and nonlinear properties. Rubber materials tend to undergo an aging process under the influence of mechanical or environmental factors, so they inevitably end up facing damage. A main cause of aging like this is known to be oxidization, which occurs through the heat of reaction at high temperatures. Accordingly, in this study an accelerated thermal aging test was carried out in order to compare the characteristic values of the bearings before and after thermal aging occurs. As a result of this experiment, it was found that a thermal aging phenomenon could have some effects on shear stiffness, energy absorption, and equivalent damping coefficients of the bearings. Furthermore, a deterioration in the dynamic properties of the natural rubber bearings caused by the thermal aging was applied to an actual bridge and then the effects of such thermal aging on the seismic performance of the bridge were also compared and analyzed based on numerical analysis. As a result of this analysis, it was found that the changes in the basic properties of the natural rubber bearings caused by the thermal aging bring only a minor effect on the seismic performance of bridges.

Background: The Korean version of the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Questionnaire (K-DASH) was recently validated, but its responsiveness, which is the degree to which an instrument is sensitive to change, has not been thoroughly evaluated in a specific condition in Koreans. We evaluated the responsiveness of the K-DASH in a homogenous cohort of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and we compared it with that of the disease-specific Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (CTQ). Methods: Fifty-six patients with CTS prospectively completed the K-DASH and CTQ before and 6 months after surgery. The responsiveness statistics were assessed for both the K-DASH and CTQ by using the standardized response mean (SRM) and the effect size (ES). Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between the K-DASH and CTQ. Results: The SRM and ES of the K-DASH were all 0.8. The SRM of the symptom and function part of the CTQ was 1.5 and 1.1, and the ES was 1.5 and 1.1, respectively. The K-DASH had moderate correlations with the symptom and function parts of the CTQs, but the postoperative K-DASH had a weak correlation with the symptom part of the postoperative CTQ. Conclusions: The K-DASH was found to have a large degree of responsiveness (SRM, ES ≥ 0.8) after carpal tunnel release in Korean patients with CTS, which is comparable to the other language versions of the DASH. Although it was less responsive than the CTQ, which is disease-specific, the region-specific K-DASH can be used as an effective outcome measurement tool for CTS, and especially for research that compares CTS with other upper limb conditions.

Background: To specify what patients want and worry preoperatively is important in orthopedic practice. The aim of the current study was to analyze the patient characteristics of rotator cuff disease in Korean population who were willing to undergo arthroscopic surgery, and to evaluate the differences in expectations and concerns by age and gender. Methods: We prospectively enrolled 303 patients who underwent rotator cuff surgery between April 2004 and August 2008. Three questionnaires were completed before surgery: the first one addressing preoperative patient’s expectation, the second one focusing on concerns by covering 64 items using a visual analogue scale, and the third one evaluating patient’s demographic characteristics. The characteristics of preoperative expectation, concern, and demographic data were evaluated according to gender and age group. Results: Female patients had lower level of sports activity (p = 0.007) and lower levels of information (p = 0.028). Gender specific worries are about a caregiver during hospital stay, operating on the working side, fear about ugly scars, postoperative pain, applying makeup or combing hair. The older group responded that they can’t be willing to change activities of daily living (p = 0.001), are not living with a spouse (p = 0.002), had previous shoulder operation history (p = 0.008), and had a lower level of information (p = 0.007). They especially worried about medical bills, worried about the physician being too young and inexperienced, postoperative pain, loss of arm function, and hospital food. Conclusions: Our data showed what Korean patients wanted and were concerned about prior to rotator cuff surgery. This can empower patients to formulate realistic expectations and make informed decisions. We feel that we can achieve higher levels of postoperative satisfaction by analyzing expectations and concerns in depth and addressing these proactively
