The effects of feeding frequency on the growth, food consumption, body composition, and hematological response of the Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegelii were investigated for 77 days at ambient water temperatures (17.2-24.5℃) in a sea cage in Tongyeong, Korea. Three replicate groups of fish were hand-fed to satiation with a commercial diet in one of four different feeding frequency trials (one meal every 2 days, and one, two and three meals per day). At the end of the experiment, the mean weight gain, specific growth rate, and daily feed intake of fish fed one and two meals per day were significantly higher than those of fish fed one meal every 2 days or three meals per day. The feed efficiency of the fish fed three meals per day was significantly lower than that of the fish in the other groups. The glucose concentration of fish fed one meal every 2 days was significantly higher than that of the other groups. We conclude that the optimum feeding frequency for improving the growth of Korean rockfish weighing 100-200 g reared in sea cages is one meal per day under our experimental conditions.

BACKGROUND: Anaerobic digestion process is recently adapted technology for treatment of organic waste such as animal manure because the energy embedded in the waste can be recovered from the waste while the organic waste were digested. Ever increased demand for consumption of meat resulted in the excessive use of antimicrobials to the livestocks for more food production. Most antimicrobials administered to animals are excreted through urine and feces, which might highly affect the biological treatment processes of the animal manure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of antimicrobials on the efficiency of anaerobic digestion process and to clarify the interactions between antimicrobials and anaerobes. METHODS AND RESULTS: The experiment was consisted of two parts 1) batch test to investigate the effects of individual antibiotic compounds on production of methane and VFAs(volatile fatty acids), and removal efficiency of organic matter, and 2) the continuous reactor test to elucidate the effects of mixed antimicrobials on the whole anaerobic digestion process. The batch test showed no inhibitions in the rate of methane and VFAs production, and the rate of organic removal were observed with treatment at 1~10 mg/L of antimicrobials while temporary inhibition was observed at 50 mg/L treatment. In contrast, treatment of 100 mg/L antimicrobials resulted in continuous decreased in the rate of methane production and organic removal efficiency. The continuous reactor test conduced to see the influence of the mixed antimicrobials showed only small declines in the methane production and organic matter removal when 1~10 mg/L of combined antimicrobials were applied but this was not significant. In contrast, with the treatment of 50 mg/L of combined antimicrobials, the rate of organic removal efficiency in effluent decreased by 2~15% and the rate of biogas production decreased by 30%. CONCLUSION(s): The antimicrobials remained in the animal manure might not be removed during the anaerobic digestion process and hence, is likely to be released to the natural ecosystem. Therefore, the efforts to decline the usage of antimicrobials for animal farming would be highly recommended.

The effects of salinity on survival, oxygen consumption, and hematological response of greenling, Hexagrammos otakii, mean body weight 147.1±3.8 g, were investigated under salinity conditions of 33.4 (control), 33.1, 32.8, 32.2, 31.0, 28.7, 23.9, 14.5, and 3.8 psu, to evaluate physiological effects in relation to changes in salinity. The survival and hematological responses of fish were measured at each salinity after 96- and 24-h exposures. The oxygen consumption rate (OCR) of fish was measured in triplicate under conditions of stepwise salinity exposure (33.4→3 3.1→32.8→32.2→31.0→28.7→23.9→14.5→3.8 psu) with an interval of 24 h at each salinity, using a continuous flow-through respirometer. No fish mortality was observed in the range of 33.4 to 14.5 psu, but the survival rate was reduced to 53.3% at 3.8 psu after 96 h of exposure. The OCRs did not significantly differ in the range between 33.4 to 28.7 psu (P>0.05), but significantly increased at 23.9 and 14.5 psu, and then dramatically decreased at 3.8 psu compared to the control (P<0.05). Hematological variables, such as glucose, glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), hematocrit, and Na+, were affected by reduced salinity. This result may be applicable for habitat and culture management of greenlings.
