Long-term therapy with doxorubicin (DOX) is associated with high incidence of cumulative and irreversible dilated cardiomyopathy. The goal of this study was to evaluate the cardioprotective effects and safety of a phlorotannin extract from a brown algae Ecklonia cava (Seapolynol™, SPN) against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in a rat model. A total of 42 rats were divided into six groups: control, low-dose SPN (LDS), high-dose SPN (HDS), DOX, DOX with low-dose SPN (DOX+LDS), and DOX with high-dose SPN (DOX+HDS). Echocardiography was performed at baseline and after 6 weeks. In left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction, DOX and DOX+LDS groups showed significant decreases (P < .001), while LDS, HDS, and DOX+HDS groups showed no significant change compared with control group. In LV mass index, DOX and DOX+LDS groups showed significant increases (P < .001 and P = .013), while LDS, HDS, and DOX+HDS groups showed no significant change compared with control group. In electron microscopy of the LV wall tissue, DOX+HDS group showed markedly less impaired myofibrils and mitochondria compared with both DOX and DOX+LDS groups. On the findings in echocardiography and electron microscopy, 6-week oral administration of SPN was safe and cardioprotective in a DOX-induced rat cardiotoxicity model in a dose-dependent manner.

In spite of the frequent involvement of many cardiac diseases, it is difficult to evaluate the left ventricular apex in detail with transtho -racic echocardiography, a first-line imaging modality in cardiovascular diseases, because the apex is very closely located at the echocar-diographic probe. Cardiac magnetic resonance enables us to evaluate the cardiac apex without any limitation to the image acquisition. We here present a case regarding a broad-based apical diverticulum, which was initially confused with apical aneurysm.

Abstract - Tribofilms formed on won surface protect the DLC coating surface and decrease the fiction coefficient. However it is very difficult to evaluate their micromechanical properties due to their small thickness, inhomogeneity and discontinuity. The phase contrast images in tapping mode atomic farce microscopy allow an estimation of inhomogeneity in micromechanical properties of the sample surface. The purpose of this investigation is to demonstrate how the phase contrast images contribute to the characterization of thin tribofilms.

트라이볼로지의 핵심분야인 마찰, 마멸에 대해 간단히 살펴보았다. 과학의 급속한 발전에도 불 구하고 아직도 이들에 대한 완전한 지식은 아직 요원한 상태이다. 그러나 현재까지 알려진 지 식으로도 기계시스템의 최적설계에 크게 도움이 된다는 사실에 대해서는 의심의 여지가 없다. 앞에서 함께 살펴본 마멸 입자에 대한 소개는 마찰과 마멸의 복합적인 산물로서 이의 관찰을 통해 분석하고자 하는 기계시스템의 상태를 효과적으로 진단하여 트라이볼로지적 거동을 이해 하는 데에 중대한 정보가 된다. 따라서 마찰과 마멸에 대한 궁극적인 연구와 함께 그 산물인 마멸입자에 대한 보다 적극적인 이해와 지식의 축적은 요소(tribo-elements)의 고성능, 고정밀 화에 크게 이바지할 것이다.
