        Exploring English Education in Beauty-Related Programs Focusing on Its Efficacy and Potential

        There is a growing need for beauty professionals to serve and interact with foreign customers with varying degrees of frequency and intensity. An inquiry was made into English education, provided to Korean university students in six four-year beauty-related programs, with the primary goal of gaining insights into the purposes, extent, and delivery of the education. In other words, pertinent aspects of English curriculums in the programs were explored. The inquiry was carried out through a survey that asked questions that touched upon various aspects of the English curriculums. Data collected being largely qualitative in nature were coded and classified to identify patterns. Strengths of the curriculums are highlighted in this paper as they can serve as models. Attention is also duly paid to the areas of curricular improvement in the hope of promoting further discussion and refinement, which calls for: (a) a shift in the focus of the education; (b) introduction of greater flexibility into the curriculums together with the provision of incentives for motivated students; and (c) implementation of additional curricular measures to facilitate and ensure students’ learning. The study has practical implications for English education for beauty students and other hospitality students at tertiary institutions in Korea and elsewhere with a similar context in which ESP has emerged into the curriculum but not taken firm root yet.

        Coverage of Habitual Past Markers, Used To and Would, in Korean High School English Textbooks

        This study examines 35 high school English textbooks—approved in accordance with the 7th National English Curriculum and used in high schools throughout South Korea—as well as their corresponding teacher’s guides with regard to the coverage of the habitual past markers in English. The study’s findings are as follows: (a) a number of the textbooks do not address the habitual past; (b) more importantly, explanation offered in many of the teacher’s guides contains misleading information on the usage of the habitual past markers; and (c) the use of the markers in examples of discourse found within the texts is inconsistent from the generally accepted view on how they are used in discourse generally. The discussion presented in this paper can lead to a better understanding of these markers, which can help develop, adapt and disseminate sound and practical information concerning used to and would.

        원형수직구 콘크리트라이닝 단면설계도표 개발

        최근에 물류비 절감, 교통 편의성 개선, 지역발전 등 정치, 경제, 사회적 요구에 따라 장대 해저터널 건설의 필요성이 증가하고 있다. 또한, 도심지에 건설되는 도로 및 철도터널에서도 터널의 장대화에 따라 공사용 및 환기용 수직구의 설치가 필수적이다. 수직구 굴착 후 설치되는 콘크리트 라이닝의 설계시 결정해야할 요소는 직경, 단면두께, 소요철근량 등이다. 이러한 수직구 직경, 하중조건, 지반조건을 고려하여 최적의 라이닝 단면설계를 위해서는 많은 구조검토가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 다양한 조건에 대하여 구조해석을 수행하여 라이닝 단면설계도표를 제시하였다. 제안된 도표를 이용하여 간편하게 규모 및 하중조건에 따른 라이닝 단면두께 및 소요철근량 산정이 가능하다. Recently, requirement of a long subsea tunnel has increased due to political, economical and social demands such as saving of distribution costs, improvement of traffic convenience, and regional development. Road and railroad tunnel need a shaft for construction and ventilation because of increase of tunnel length. Shaft diameter, lining sectional thickness and rebar quantity have to be determined for design of concrete lining in the shaft. A lot of structural analyses are needed for optimal design of concrete lining considering shaft diameter, load conditions and ground conditions. Design charts are proposed by structural analyses for various conditions in this study. A sectional thickness and rebar quantity can be easily determined using the proposed design charts.

        Problems Encountered by Western English Teachers with the Paperwork and Feedback Mechanism

        Provided that the course offered to engineering students satisfies the accreditation requirement, faculty members are required to prepare a course syllabus and a report for each course, respectively, in the beginning and at the end of an academic term at a Korean university; native English-speaking teachers are no exception. Although the amount of work or time involved in doing the paperwork was not perceived to be of particular concern, it was found that the English teachers interviewed were quite frustrated with lack of communication regarding its purpose and use. Also troubling was the fact that instructions provided were incomplete and inaccurate. Consequently, these teachers were unable to provide entirely satisfactory documentation, a situation which rendered this quality assurance measure virtually meaningless. To take full advantage of this type of paperwork, it is urged that an inclusive environment be fostered by debriefing the teachers as needed, supplying them with comprehensible instructions, and engaging them, when possible, in pertinent decision making processes.

        불연속암반의 공학적 특성에 따른 원형수직구 편하중에 관한 연구

        원형수직구의 경우 지형적인 요인과 지반의 불균질성으로 인하여 등분포의 대칭하중이 작용하는 경우보다는 비대칭의 편하중이 작용하는 경우가 많을 것으로 예상된다. 지금까지 지반조건에 따른 원형수직구 벽체에 작용하는 편하중 산정을 위한 정량적인 연구는 미흡한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 불연속암반의 불균질성을 고려한 불연속체 해석을 통하여 이방성 거동에 따른 원형수직구 벽체에 작용하는 편하중 분포특성을 분석하였다. 또한, 깊이에 따른 암반등급 및 초기응력이 편하중에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 검토 결과 절리특성에 따라 양호한 경암반에서는 25%이하의 편하중이 발생하는 것으로 분석되었으며, 수직구 깊이에 따른 암반등급의 영향을 검토한 결과 경암의 편하중비는 25%이하, 연암에서는 $30%{\sim}40%$로 나타났다. 또한, 풍화가 진행된 파쇄연암의 편하중비는 $40{\sim}50%$로 나타났다. 깊이 100m의 경암반에 대하여 초기응력을 나타내는 측압계수(Ko)를 변수로 한 불연속체 해석을 수행하였다. 해석 결과 측압계수가 2.0보다 작은 경우의 편하중비는 약 25%의 값을 나타내나 측압계수가 2.0보다 큰 경우에는 편하중비가 점차 증가하는 경향을 나타냈다. In the case of a circular shaft, it is expected that asymmetric loads should apply on the surface rather than symmetric loads due to geographical factors and the non-homogeneity of the jointed rock masses. In this study, discontinuous numerical analysis was carried in order to analyze the characteristics of asymmetric load distribution on the wall of the circular shaft due to anisotropy caused by heterogeneity of rock masses affected by the discontinuities like as a Joint. And it was also analyzed that the effect of the mechanical properties varied with the rock mass rating and horizontal stress with depth had influence in the asymmetric load on the wall of the shaft. In the case of considering the effect of the joint as variable, asymmetric load ratio $(R_p)$, which was defined as the ratio of the load subtracted minimum from maximum to minimum, was below 25% in the hard rock. As regarding the variation of the rock mass rating with depth as variable, the value of $R_p$ was below than 25% in the hard rock, and the value between 30% and 40% in the soft rock. On the other hand, the $R_p$ of fractures rock was between $45{\sim}50%$ which value was much higher than that in better rock mass rating.

        Exploring beauty students’ motivation for learning English

        The present study set out to explore what propels university students aspiring to careers in thehospitality industry to engage in learning English as a foreign language. In this pursuit, 69beauty students at a four-year university were asked to shed light on their underlying reasonspertaining, in particular, to achievement goal orientations. A survey through self-reportedquestionnaires was used covering the students’ career prospects, perceptions of English, andexperiences of and anticipation for English use in and outside of the homeland. The studyindicates that the students as a whole were more interested in acquiring language skillsnecessary to interact with foreigners in social and work-related contexts than gaining knowledgeor test-taking skills required to excel in school, procure employment, and/or advance theircareers per se. The study also reveals that most students were motivated to learn English,especially in anticipation of using the language in their future capacity as service providers,consultants, and educators in beauty-related fields. These findings point to English educationthat is geared toward enhancement of the students’ communicative competence to the extentwhich they can converse and interact with foreigners who speak English. The study ismeaningful in that it offers fresh insights into the reality, as perceived by the students, whilechallenging some conventional assumptions about their motivation.

        복층터널 연결 수직구용 철재브래킷 구조성능 연구

        복층터널은 도심지에서 대심도로 시공되는 특성이 있으므로 복층터널용 수직구는 급기 및 배기구, 대피통로 계단, 엘리베이터, 배전시설, 접속터널 등의 설치공간의 확보가 필요하다. 또한 복층터널용 수직구는 도심지에 시공되는 특성상 공사영향 최소화를 위하여 터널굴착 완료 후 수직구 내부 콘크리트 구조물의 급속시공이 필요하다. 따라서 수직구 내부 슬래브 및 계단용 콘크리트 시공의 프리캐스트화가 필요하며 이러한 수직구 내부 프리캐스트 구조물 지지를 위한 브래킷의 급속시공기술이 필요하다. 브래킷 형태 사례조사 결과 현장타설 방식, 프리캐스트 방식, 철재브래킷 방식 등이 있는데 본 연구에서는 시공속도 향상을 고려하여 경제성이 양호하고 시공성이 우수한 철재브래킷을 개선한 새로운 브래킷에대하여, 직선형 매립 앵커볼트와 꺾임형 매립 앵커볼트에 대한 구조성능시험결과 소요하중 지지능력을 확보하는 것을확인하였고 꺾임형 매립 앵커볼트의 하중지지능력이 보다 큰 것을 확인하였다. Since the double-deck tunnel is deeply constructed in the city, it is necessary to secure the installation space of air supply and exhaust, escape passage stairs, elevator, distribution facilities and connection tunnels in the vertical shaft for the double-deck tunnel. Also, in order to minimize the effect of construction on adjacent area, it is necessary to construct the concrete structures at high speed in vertical shaft after tunnel excavation. Therefore, the slabs and the stairs in vertical shaft are needed to be constructed using precast concrete, and the rapid construction techniques of bracket for supporting the inner precast structure are needed. The bracket installation methods include cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete and steel. In this study, the improvement of the steel brackets with good economical efficiency and good workability was carried out in consideration of the improvement of the construction speed. We have developed a new bracket that is optimized through bracket shape improvement, anchor bolt position adjustment and quantity optimization. As a result of the structural performance test, it was confirmed that the required load supporting capacity was secured. As a result of structural performance test for bar type anchor bolt and bent anchor anchor bolt, it was confirmed that the required load carrying capacity was secured and that the load bearing capacity of bent anchor bolt was large.
