Facile and quantitative methods for evaluating daily stain prevention and removal efficacy were designed for developing daily whitening mouthwashes. A new daily staining index was defined as a measurement of stains. Hydroxyapatite powder was used as a tooth substitute and the degree of staining was quantitatively evaluated. Mouthwashes containing polymeric phosphates, sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), showed significantly higher stain prevention efficacy with just one treatment than those containing common pyrophosphate chelating agents. The newly developed daily whitening mouthwash containing 1% SHMP without hydrogen peroxide showed excellent daily stain prevention and removal efficacy compared with a typical commercial mouthwash. We expect that consumers with teeth sensitive to hydrogen peroxide can effectively use this SHMP-containing mouthwash as a teeth-whitening mouthwash. In addition, we believe that the new approaches introduced in this study can contribute to opening up new avenues in the field of teeth-whitening oral care products.

Placenta is a special organ that contains many nutrients such as growth factors, minerals, and bioactive peptides. Dipeptides of glycine and leucine are major components of porcine placenta extracts (PPE) that has been used as an alternative of human placenta extracts. In this study, we investigated whether major peptides of PPE, Glycyl-L-Leucine (Gly-Leu), L-Leucyl-Glycine (Leu-Gly), and L-Leucyl-L-Leucine (Leu-Leu), affect skin hydration and elasticity in vitro and in vivo. We found that Gly-Leu and Leu-Gly dipeptides induced the expression of transglutaminase 1 in normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEKs) whereas Leu-Leu dipeptides did not. Treatment with Gly-Leu or Leu-Gly significantly increased hyaluronan (HA) synthesis in NHEKs and the upregulation of hyaluronan synthase 2 (HAS2) mRNA level was confirmed. In addition, elastase activity was inhibited in NHEKs treated with Gly-Leu or Leu-Gly dipeptides. Oral administration of Gly-Leu or Leu-Gly dipeptides increased skin hydration and elasticity in UVB-irradiated hairless mice. The significant upregulation of HA in UVB-irradiated hairless mice was observed in response to oral administration of Gly-Leu or Leu-Gly. These results suggest that the major dipeptides of porcine placenta, Gly- Leu and Leu-Gly, are potentially active ingredients for skin moisturization formulations.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the duration of frying and storage periods on physicochemical characteristics of various oils using at home. The materials used for the study consisted of four kinds of vegetable oils: soybean, canola, extra virgin olive and pure olive oils, and shortening. Chicken breasts were fried in oils heated at 180℃. The oils were stored with or without filtering and reused 3 times, during the 10 day period. The extra virgin and pure olive oils showed higher acid, peroxide value and yellowness than the other oils (p<0.05), but soybean oil showed the highest increase in acid, peroxide value and yellowness with reusing and storage. In sensory evaluation, the chicken breast fried with soybean oils remarkably decreased the overall acceptance. These results suggested that all frying oils are available because acid and peroxide values of the oils are lower than the standard level. However, reusing soybean oil should be noted with caution in that it is very easy to reduce rancidity, and extra virgin olive oil is not appropriate for frying.
