The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of transportation via Emergency Medical Service Information Center in a ski or snowboard injured patients. We evaluated 233 patients with ski or snowboard injuries who transported to emergency department from Nov. 2002 to Feb. 2003 via Emergency Medical Service Information Center or not. Among the patients, 66 patients were transported via Emergency Medical Service Information Center(group 1) and 167 patients were transported without using the information center(group 2). Transportation time and time for treatment of group 1 were shorter than that of group 2. Transportation time after injury were 119±92 minutes in group 1, 128±82 minutes in group 2. Treatment time after arrival of emergency department were 116±54 minutes in group 1, 126±75 minutes in group 2. Our results show that transportation after winter sports injury via Emergency Medical Service Information Center is effective for transportation and treatment.

Hydrofluoric acid (HF), one of the strongest inorganic acids, is used mainly for industrial purpose. Hydrofluoric acid injuries has a potential for both systemic as well as severe local tissue destruction. One of the most serious consequences of severe exposure to HF by any route is marked lowering of serum calcium (hypocalcemia) and other metabolic changes, such as hypomagnesemia and which may result in a fatal outcome if not recognized and treated. promptly cardiotoxicity is not well known except arrhythmias, which are a primary cause of death. We report a case of myopericarditis by ingestion of hydrofluoric acid.

Superior mesenteric vein thrombosis and portal vein thrombosis are rare conditions that are difficult to diagnose due to vague symptoms, but they are usually fatal when they occur. Appendicitis is the one of the most common causes of superior mesenteric vein thrombosis, via venous drainage from the appendiceal area into the portal system. We report a case of superior mesenteric vein thrombosis and portal vein thrombosis secondary to appendicitis presenting with diarrhea, low abdominal pain, and jaundice. The patient was treated with antibiotics and anticoagulants, without fatal complications, but developed a chronic sequela of portal vein thrombosis. It is important to consider thrombosis of the superior mesenteric vein and portal vein in patients who have intra-abdominal infection with specific or non-specific symptoms.

본 연구의 목적은 생태소양의 성격을 탐색하며, 생태소양을 갖추기 위하여 누구나 익혀야할 기초적인 생태원리들을 선정하고, 선정된 생태원리들을 이해하기 적합한 논생태계에서 체험 프로그램을 제시하는데 있다. 생태소양의 자연과학적 측면으로서 생태계 이해를 익혀야할 기초적인 생태학적 개념들을 탐색하였다. 장상호의 학문의 구조에 대한 생각과 생태학자들이 생태계를 이해하는 데 중시한 개념들에 근거하여 생태학적 기초요소에 관한 연구자들의 결과를 비교하였다. 생태계 제 요소간의 상호작용을 중시하는 Klemow의 11가지 생태개념이 기초생태소양을 함양하는데 상대적 적절성을 보였다. 이에 근거하여 논생태계 프로그램에서 익힐 생태개념들로 Klemow가 제시한 개념들을 사용하였다. 논생태계는 다원적 특성, 습지로서의 특성을 가지고 있으며, 생태소양을 학습할 수 있는 학습의 장소이며, 학습의 대상이다. Klemow가 제시한 생태개념들에 근거하여 논생태계의 가치를 탐구한 결과 생태계를 이해하는 데 필요한 생태 개념들을 익히고, 생태소양을 함양시키기에 논생태계는 적합하다. Independent Investigation Method(IIM) 프로그램을 적용한 선행연구 분석을 통하여 과학적 탐구활동을 하기에 적합한 프로그램임을 확인하였다. IIM 프로그램이 적용된 논생태계 체험프로그램과 통하여 학습자들은 10가지 생태 개념들을 논에서 확인하도록 구성되었다. 학습자는 논생태계 프로그램을 통하여 생명현상, 물질순화, 에너지 흐름, 그 속에 인간의 역할을 살펴볼 수 있다. The purpose of this study sought features of ecological literacy, selected basic principles of ecology which everyone should learn, and proposed appropriate learning of how and where to understand the ecological principles chosen. Orr’s ecological literacy has features of natural science, humanities, and sociology. Ecological literacy represents understanding of ecological principles based on natural science as well as humanistic and sociological recognition about human life in ecosystems. Basic ecological concepts for the understanding of ecosystems were investigated in regard to natural science enhancing ecological literacy. Ecologists’ various opinions about ecological foundation elements were compared from Jang’s structure of study and the concepts emphasized for ecologists to understand the ecosystem. Basic ecological concepts of Klemow which emphasize the interaction between the elements of ecosystems were relatively adequate rather than those of other researchers for the understanding of ecosystems. On the basis of these results, the paddy field experience program was composed of Klemow ’s basic ecological concepts. By the analysis of previous studies to which the IIM program have been applied, the IIM program is suitable for scientific research activities and is a learning tool to investigate paddy field ecosystems. With the IIM program for paddy field ecosystem experience program, learners can understand the kinds of 10 ecological concepts in paddy fields. The paddy field ecosystem is easy to access compared to other ecosystems. In addition to exploring a variety of biological phenomena as well as providing our daily food, paddy fields are historical places of our national agricultural culture. Throughout the paddy field ecosystem experience program, paddy fields are expected to be refocused.
Errors in pediatric death certificates issued in an emergency department

Purpose: Errors in pediatric death certificates (DCs) have been rarely reported. We analyzed the errors in writing the DCs issued in an emergency department (ED). Methods: The DCs issued at the ED to patients aged 18 years or younger were retrospectively analyzed. Their medical records were reviewed by 4 emergency physicians. Major and minor errors in the DCs were defined based on the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th revision guidelines. The DCs were classified into the disease group and the external group by the manner of death, and the errors were compared. Results: Among a total of 87 DCs issued in the ED, 97.5% and 100% were confirmed to contain at least 1 error in the disease (n = 40) and external (n = 47) groups, respectively. The median numbers of errors in the analyzed DCs were 2.0 and 3.0 in the disease and external groups, respectively (P = 0.004). In the disease group, the most frequent major error was reporting only a secondary condition as the underlying cause of death without antecedent causes (6 cases [15.0%]). In the external group, the most frequent major error was writing 2 or more causes in a single line for the cause of death (17 cases [36.2%]). In both groups, the most common minor error was omission of a time interval record for the cause of death (disease, 37 cases [92.5%]; external, 42 cases [89.4%]). Conclusion: Any errors were identified in 98.9% of pediatric DCs issued in the ED, and the total number of errors was larger in the external group.
