The present study explored how two types of discourse markers (micro- and macro-markers) affected literal and inferential listening comprehension. Participants were Korean 10th graders (N = 92) who have been learning English as a foreign language. Results of the study showed that micro-markers promoted literal comprehension to a statistically significant degree, whereas they did not facilitate inferential comprehension. Contrastingly, macro-markers were significantly effective in enhancing inferential comprehension, not literal comprehension. The present study makes an important contribution to the current literature on L2 listening comprehension, by providing the first empirical evidence concerning the effects of micro- and macro-markers on literal and inferential listening comprehension.

This meta-analysis investigates the impacts of the four individual components (i.e., definitional, cognitive, behavioral, and cultural participation approaches) of a speech anxiety program. The results, drawn from a compilation of 117 studies published between 1994 and 2023 (k = 389, N = 11,355), reveal that (a) the definitional and cognitive approaches have the most substantial effect in reducing speech anxiety, (b) the behavioral approach is particularly effective in enhancing self-efficacy, presentation skills, and positive thinking, and (c) the definitional and behavioral approaches show notable effectiveness in rectifying negatively biased thinking. These findings offer practical insights for practitioners seeking to optimize and streamline speech anxiety programs within various educational settings.
