Phonological awareness integrated instruction: The effect of analogies/anagrams on vocabulary acquisition scores

        박휴버트 한국영어어문교육학회 2011 영어어문교육 Vol.17 No.3

Research studies have shown that phonological awareness focused analogies and anagrams can be used as an effective game-based teaching instruction. However, previous studies used analogies and anagrams as separate instructional tools, especially in EFL-related situations. There has been no vocabulary learning in analogies/anagrams instruction provided, nor has there been usage of an integrated workbook for ‘vocabulary learning and analogies/anagrams’. This study examined the effect on learners’ vocabulary acquisition scores when a truly phonological awareness integrated ‘analogies/anagrams and vocabulary learning’ workbook was used as an instructional practice workbook. The results show that the phonological awareness integrated instruction significantly increased learners’ vocabulary acquisition scores among 40 college students with minimal or basic level of English proficiency.

Anxiety and EFL presentations: How instruction focused on reducing anxiety improves performance

        박휴버트 학습자중심교과교육학회 2019 학습자중심교과교육연구 Vol.19 No.24

Using Horwitz, Horwitz and Cope’s (1986) Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), this study explored English as a Foreign Language (EFL) anxiety in the context of Tobias’ model that explains anxiety in three stages. To understand how language learning anxiety is exhibited among learners during class presentations, and consequently influences presentation performance, ninety-two students were recruited to participate in a teacher-student relationship intervention program that was implemented during a 15-week semester at medium-sized university in South Korea. The treatment intervention entailed 10-minute focus groups and five reflection essays. Both groups increased in presentation performance at the end of the semester, indicating that the teacher-student relationship intervention had no significant effect. The teacher-student interactions as a way to mitigate the effects of anxiety may have been offset from the care given to the students in the control group. This indicates that instructors interested in decreasing EFL classroom anxiety should seek to develop skills related to listening, empathy, and caring in order to foster low-anxiety learning environments with their language students.

The Effect of Films with and without Subtitles on Vocabulary Acquisition Scores of Foreign Language Learners: Using a Korean Sit-com, Unhindered High-Kick

박휴버트 영상영어교육학회 2012 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.13 No.3

Research has shown that cognition and reasoning styles differ across cultures, and the purpose of this study was to discover the differences in language learning style between two different cultures. Today, it is widely believed that a foreign language can be learnt through watching subtitled programs in and out of the class. The present study represents a preliminary effort to empirically examine the efficacy of subtitled program on vocabulary acquisition scores of intermediate “Korean as a Foreign Language (KFL)” students. To examine the effects of subtitles on vocabulary acquisition, two groups (21 Chinese and 21 American students) of language learners studying conversational Korean at the Institute of Korean Language and Culture Education at a university participated in the study. Each of the groups watched three episodes of a Korean sitcom each with a different type of subtitling: a) interlingual, b) intralingual and c) without any subtitles. After watching each episode, 25 short-answer open-ended vocabulary questions were given to both groups. The results revealed that Chinese students acquired less vocabulary when watched the episodes with subtitles whereas both interlingual and intralingual subtitles were more conductive to vocabulary acquisition for American students.

문화적/상황적 영향에 의한 학습자와 교사의 신념이 EFL학습전략에 미치는 효과

        박휴버트(Pak, Hubert H) 한국영어어문교육학회 2015 영어어문교육 Vol.21 No.4

As learner beliefs derive from a variety of sources, including the learner’s cultural and situational influences, it is essential to understand learner strategies for implementing appropriate language instructions. The present study represents a preliminary effort to empirically examine the effects of learner and teacher beliefs on EFL learning strategies, and then an attempt is made to explore cultural and situational influences on learner and teacher beliefs. A total of 40 students studying intermediate English class at a university participated in this study, and both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed. First, semi-structured interviews were conducted to investigate cultural and situational influences on learner and teacher beliefs, and all collected data were analyzed by NVivo version 10. Then, to examine the effects of learner and teacher beliefs, the participants were divided into two groups and taught with the instructions (designed for this research) on vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension and writing. The result revealed that both cultural and situational influences have an impact on choosing learning strategies, and when teacher beliefs are matched with that of learner beliefs, students showed a significant improvement on their foreign language learning.

스키장 이용 외식 고객들의 레스토랑 선택속성 연구

박휴버트 ( Hubert Park ),윤혜려 ( Hei Ryeo Yoon ) 한국식생활문화학회 2011 韓國食生活文化學會誌 Vol.26 No.4

The objective of this study was to classify dining-out customers` behaviors at ski resorts based on their restaurant selection factors. Data were collected one-on-one via interview questionnaires of 178 customers at the ski resorts. The mean scores of important attributes (4.12) and satisfactory attributes (3.08) for the sport&leisure purpose group were analyzed. For the date&family trip purpose group, the important attributes (4.13) and satisfactory attributes (3.06) were evaluated, resulting in a significant difference between the two visiting-purpose groups by independent t-test (p<0.05). The recognized important attributes for the sport&leisure purpose group were food taste (4.54), hygiene (4.53), menu variety (4.22), menu price (4.15), and convenience (4.12), and the most recognizable satisfactory attributes were related to convenience (3.52), waiting time (3.95), and employee service (3.90). For the date&family trip purpose group, recognized important attributes were hygiene (4.83), food taste (4.67), menu price (4.40), convenient (4.33), menu variety (4.25), waiting time (4.21), and employee service (4.10), and marked satisfactory attributes were convenience (3.65), hygiene (3.31), atmosphere (3.25), employee service (3.23), waiting time (3.17), and food taste (3.00). These results suggest that restaurant selection attributes would be useful tools to restaurant managers in controlling the quality of foodservice and satisfying service requirements for dinning-out customers at ski resorts.

소리 시각화 기술을 이용한 발음습득 지도 방안

        박휴버트 ( Pak Hubert H ),민수정 ( Min Su-jung ) 대한영어영문학회 2008 영어영문학연구 Vol.34 No.2

This research looks into a component of language in foreign language learning and teaching - pronunciation instruction and acquisition - and presents that computer-based training using sound visualization technique can be effectively implemented to Korean EFL learners to produce and perceive English pitch and durational contrast for words in sentences as well as for words in isolation. Training using sound visualization technique can be effective in improving second language learners’ perceptions and productions of segmental and suprasegmental speech contrasts. This study assessed the efficacy of a pronunciation training that provided visual feedback for EFL learners acquiring pitch and durational contrasts to produce and perceive English phonemic distinctions. The subjects’ ability to produce and to perceive novel English words was tested in two contexts before and after training; words in isolation and words in sentences. The findings support the feasibility of learner-centered programs using sound visualization technique for English language pronunciation instruction. (Kongju University)

        Movement-Speech-Synchronized Methodology (MSSM): An Exploration

        Michael Diehl,박휴버트,김수지 한국영어어문교육학회 2017 영어어문교육 Vol.23 No.4

In this study we develop Movement Speech Synchronized Method (MSSM) of teaching English grammar as a synopsis of empirical theories on implicit approaches to teaching. Using randomized control experiment on Korean college students learning English as foreign language, we test whether motor-patterns linked to lexical items as an integral part of MSSM can help students to efficiently acquire grammatical patterns. Our findings imply that MSSM acts an effective scaffolding method for language learning. Its use is related to increased production rates for syntactic patterns in comparison to traditional methods of teaching grammar.

Look it up: Phrasal Verbs in The Simpsons

        오웬 데일리,박휴버트 영상영어교육학회 2015 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.16 No.2

This study attempts to investigate whether learners can better memorize the meaning of phrasal verbs via animated video clips than through traditional paper-based instruction. Second language learners experience particular trouble with the idiomatic nature of phrasal verbs. The sheer volume and variety confuse and confound learners used to using prior knowledge and contextual clues to negotiate meaning. Research has shown that phrasal verbs are more difficult to memorize than other types of vocabulary. Using video clips of characters using phrasal verbs in context could help EFL learners to recall and produce phrasal verbs. A class of upper-intermediate-level adult English learners was shown video clips from the animated TV show The Simpsons to find out whether it would have any effect on their ability to memorize and reproduce phrasal verbs. Through quantitative analysis, it was found that learners introduced to the phrasal verbs through the video clips showed greater recall than those who studied via traditional methods only. The significance of the results of this pilot study suggests that a larger study with more participants would be beneficial in determining whether teachers should include video clips in their curricula as part of vocabulary lessons.

Distribution and morphological characteristics of Scopolia japonica Maxim. in Korea

        장창기,정규영,명순,남보미,박휴버트,엄정애 한국식물분류학회 2011 식물 분류학회지 Vol.41 No.3

The morphological characteristics of the Korean Scopolia japonica Maxim., commonly known as ‘Mi-chi-gwang-i-pul’ in Korean, were re-evaluated in comparison with results from previous research, while the distribution map was formulated according to existing flora and voucher specimens. The result of the re-evaluation has shown that there are some distinctive discrepancies compared to the previous reports of some characteristics such as the color of the basal stem, numbers of lateral veins, apex shape of calyx and corolla including the color of corolla. The Korean Scopolia japonica Maxim is found throughout Korea except Jeju-do province. The intra-specific species such as S. parviflora (Dunn.) Nakai, S. lutescens Y.N. Lee and S. kwangdokensis Y.N. Lee were treated as synonyms of S. japonica Maxim. in this research.
