The V-ing Construction in L2 Written English

        Hyeson Park(박혜선) 현대문법학회 2019 현대문법연구 Vol.102 No.-

This study explores the distribution of the multi-functional V-ing construction in Korean college freshmen’s written English, focusing on its use across different proficiency levels and text types. A small corpus (75,000 words) consisting of narrative and argumentative essays was analyzed, producing the following results: 1) The overall frequency of the V-ing construction exhibited a relation, though non-linear, with L2 proficiency. 2) The V-ing construction was more common as the gerund than the participle, a pattern consistent with what was observed in previous NS studies. 3) In argumentative essays, gerunds as sentential subjects were as common as the prepositional object function in contrast to the overwhelming number of prepositional objects in NS data. 4) The adverbial participle clause emerged ahead of the nominal modifier, and the subordinate participle clauses tended to precede the matrix clauses in the narrative essays and in the argumentative essays of the lower level learners. Influence of the essay prompts, learners’ insufficient knowledge of the lexico-discourse features of the gerund and the participle clauses were conjectured to have attributed to the pattern incongruent with that of NS usage. Pedagogical implications are suggested to enhance L2 learners’ knowledge of the target construction.

영어 학습자의 명사화 구문 사용 연구

        박혜선(Hyeson Park) 한국영미어문학회 2018 영미어문학 Vol.- No.129

This study examines the nominalization construction in Korean college students’ written English, focusing on the interaction of text types and learners’ English levels with the use of the target construction. A small sub-corpus compiled out of the Yonsei English Learner Corpus was analyzed, producing the following results. Firstly, the token frequency and diversity of nominalization were shown to be related with the learners’ English proficiency as well as text types. Secondly, the cohesive function of nominalization did not exhibit a strong relation with either text types or learners’ English proficiency. Acquisition of the cohesive function of nominalization appears to be a demanding task even for high proficiency learners, justifying a provision of explicit instruction on its form and function. Future research on the comprehension of nominalized structures and its effect on knowledge acquisition in various academic disciplines is suggested.

Adverbials in L2 English of Korean Children

        Hyeson Park(박혜선) 언어과학회 2016 언어과학연구 Vol.0 No.77

This study explores the acquisition and use of adverbials by child learners of English. Longitudinal data collected from five Korean children learning English in a naturalistic setting were analyzed using a taxonomy of adverbials constructed based on reference grammars. After over 30 months of exposure to English in the US, the children developed competence to utilize various types of adverbials in communication, though the developmental trajectories were not incremental, exhibiting intra-individual variability. Space adverbials were high in both type and token frequency, followed by time and contingency adverbials. Preferred realization types were single-word adverbs and prepositional phrases, which occurred in the sentence final position most frequently. The learners’ L2 proficiency, context of L2 learning, and transfer of L1 linguistic features were identified as factors interacting with the acquisition and use of adverbials.

        담화표지어 ‘좀’ 사용 연구

        박혜선(Park, Hyeson) 한국응용언어학회 2011 응용 언어학 Vol.27 No.1

This study explores the development and use of com, a multi-functional discourse marker, by Chinese learners of L2 Korean. Oral production data elicited from 27 Chinese migrant workers at three proficiency levels and five advanced Chinese students were analyzed focusing on the six functions of com: mitigation of request, negative evaluation, statement/excuse, intensification of request, focus, and filler. The patterns observed in the Interlanguage of the Chinese learners were compared with those found in a native Korean corpus. The results are as follows: 1) There appeared very few coms in the migrant workers’ Interlanguage until they reached the advanced level. 2) The first coms were learned as part of prefabricated chunks. 3) Mitigation of request was the first function acquired by the Chinese workers, followed by the filler function. 4) Compared to native speakers, the L2 learners produced fewer coms as intensifiers, but more coms as fillers. 5) The Chinese students with a shorter length of residence than the workers exhibited more diverse uses of com, implying the advantage of formal instruction in acquiring discourse markers.

The Use of Reporting Verbs by Native and Non-native English Writers in Applied Linguistics and Engineering

        박혜선(Hyeson Park) 한국영미어문학회 2021 영미어문학 Vol.- No.141

This paper explores the behavior of reporting verbs (RVs) in research articles written by native (NES) and non-native English-speaking (NNES) scholars in the field of applied linguistics and engineering. A corpus of 963,396 words was compiled from journals published in Korea and overseas. An analysis was performed focusing on the type and token, citation forms, tense, and stance of RVs. Some significant findings are as follows: 1) the NES and NNES texts were similar in the token and type frequency of the RVs except for the NNES writers’ overuse of ‘according to.’ 2) the NNES text diverged from the NES text in utilizing tenses, linking tenses and citation forms, and expressing stance with RVs. 3) the applied linguistics texts contained more RVs in quantity and diversity than the engineering texts. 4) the two disciplines differed in the way they interacted with their readers. The engineering articles employed RVs with a more neutral tone while the applied linguistics articles RVs with a stronger authorial tone. Our findings indicate that the use of RVs is an outcome of complex interaction of various factors including disciplinary culture, writers’ strategic choice, and writers’ experience with the English language.

원어민과 비원어민의 학술논문에 나타난 there-존재문 연구

박혜선 ( Hyeson Park ) 한국외국어대학교 언어연구소 2022 언어와 언어학 Vol.- No.96

This study examines the there-existential construction in research articles written by native and non-native English scholars in the disciplines of applied linguistics and engineering. A corpus analysis was conducted focusing on the overall frequency, distribution patterns across the article subsections, the structure of the logical subject, and pragma-discourse functions. The results showed clear differences between the soft and hard sciences, with the former exhibiting a higher token frequency and more complex logical subjects. The native and non-native texts were also distinct; the native scholars produced fewer tokens but more complex logical subjects. The results support the role of academic disciplines and English proficiency in the utilization of the there-construction. The results also point to the relevance of linguistic issues in research publication.

Noun Phrases in Korean Students` Written English

        Hyeson Park(박혜선) 언어과학회 2017 언어과학연구 Vol.0 No.81

Building upon the attention paid to the significant role of the noun phrase (NP) as an indicator of advanced academic literacy and a useful assessment tool for written language development, this study examines the distribution and structure of NPs in essays written by Korean university freshmen. Utilizing a developmental stage index of the NP adapted from Biber, Gray, and Poonpon (2011), we analyzed a small learner corpus, producing the following results: 1) the quantity of NPs produced by the learners was not an indicator of either L2 proficiency or text type, 2) the complexity of modification structure and the length of NPs varied across L2 proficiency levels, 3) the majority of the modifiers used by the learners belonged to the first and second stage of the developmental stage index, with very few instances of modifiers from stages 3 and 4, and 4) the higher level learners’ use of modifiers exhibited their developing awareness of generic features of academic English.

Grammatical Metaphor in Academic Writing: Focusing on Nominalization and Verbalization

        Hyeson Park(박혜선) 언어과학회 2019 언어과학연구 Vol.0 No.89

This paper explores the distribution of nominalization and verbalization, the most common forms of ideational grammatical metaphor, in research papers by domestic and international scholars, focusing on disciplinary variation and L1 and L2 differences. An analysis of a two-million word corpus revealed that the discourse of hard sciences differed from that of soft sciences in the frequency of nouns and verbalizations, but not of nominalizations. This pattern, together with high tokens of nominalizations in L1 political science texts is consistent with the view that nominalization is no longer discipline sensitive. L1 and L2 differences were found with the use of verbalizations, and the high frequency of nominalizations in L2 political science articles. Inefficient control of assertiveness was speculated as a possible cause of this pattern. The importance of grammatical metaphor in academic texts necessitates a focus on its diverse forms and functions in L2 instruction.

원어민과 비원어민의 논문 초록에 나타난 축약관계사절

        감경아(Kam Kyunga),박혜선(Park Hyeson) 한국영어학학회 2008 영어학연구 Vol.- No.25

Building upon Master (2001), who observed that technical research articles by native English speakers utilized reduced relative clauses (RRCs) to create clear and concise texts, this paper examines and compares the occurrence of RRCs in native and non-native academic writing. For this purpose, a corpus of 200,000 words was compiled, which was composed of abstracts of master"s theses published in the States and Korea in the field of humanities, and science and engineering. The data were analyzed focused on the following points: 1) differences between native and non-native writers in the use of RRCs. 2) differences across fields of study in the use of RRCs. 3) syntactic contexts for RRCs. The analysis reveals the following: 1) overall, more RCs were used in the native texts. 2) RRCs were most frequent in the technical writings by native speakers, while least frequent in the technical theses by non-native speakers. 3) RRCs in the native writing were affected by syntactic contexts and information structure, but this effect was not clearly seen in the non-native writing.
