To investigate excess $Na^+$ effect, $Bi_{0.5}(Na_{0.78+x}K_{0.22})_{0.5}TiO_3$ ($0{\leq}x{\leq}0.05$) (BNKT) ceramics were prepared by using a conventional solid-state reaction method. The structure and ferroelectric properties of BNKT ceramics were characterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction) and polarization dependence by external electric field. Also, the temperature dependence of dielectric constant and loss were studied. From these results, it was found that appropriate excess $Na^+$ into BNKT ceramics compensate the volatility and induce dense ceramics. The enhanced piezoelectric coefficient (158 pC/N) and depolarization temperature ($202^{\circ}C$) were obtained for the x=0.01 composition.

$Bi_{0.5+x}(Na_{0.78}K_{0.22})_{0.5-3x}TiO_3$ ceramics with an excess $Bi^{3+}$ and a deficiency of $Na^+$ and $K^+$ were synthesized by a conventional solid state reaction method. The structure and morphology of $Bi_{0.5+x}(Na_{0.78}K_{0.22})_{0.5-3x}TiO_3$ ceramics were characterized by X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The electric polarization and mechanical strain induced by external electric field, and the temperature dependence of dielectric constant were investigated. These results demonstrated that an ergodic relaxor phase can be induced by controls of the mole ratio of $Bi^{3+}$, $Na^+$ and $K^+$. A phase boundary between non-ergodic and ergodic relaxor phases can be observed at ambient temperature. The ergodic relaxor phase can be transferred to the ferroelectric phase by application of the electric field. The stability of the induced ferroelectric phases strongly depends on the mole ratio of $Bi^{3+}$, $Na^+$ and $K^+$. The maximum strain of 0.31% was observed in $Bi_{0.51}(Na_{0.78}K_{0.22})_{0.47}TiO_3$ ceramics sintered at $1,150^{\circ}C$ for 2 h.

$0.97Bi_{0.5+x}(Na_{0.78}K_{0.22})_{0.5-3x}TiO_3-0.03LaFeO_3$ lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were fabricated by a solid state reaction method. $LaFeO_3$ additives were added to $Bi_{0.5}(Na_{0.78}K_{0.22})_{0.5}TiO_3$ for volatile compensation of bismuth and sodium ions in the sintering process. To create A-site vacancies, the mole ratio and charge valence of A-site ions ($Bi^{3+}$, $Na^+$ and $K^+$) were controlled. The improved piezoelectric properties were observed by addition of $LaFeO_3$ and control of A-site vacancies. In particular, a $d_{33}^*(S_{max}/E_{max})$ value of 614pm/V and an electric field induced strain of 0.33% was observed in $0.97Bi_{0.505}(Na_{0.78}K_{0.22})_{0.485}TiO_3-0.03LaFeO_3$ ceramic.

Out-of-Limit Transients due to thermal stratification are discovered in the pressurizer of the nuclear power plants supplied by Westinghouse. The occurring of out-of-limit transients are not reported in the pressurizer of OPR1000. However, the occurring of out-of-limit transients are assumed for the pressurizer of OPR1000 and are evaluated for the pressurizer surge nozzle structural integrity. The evaluation results show that the ASME Code requirements are met even though out-of-limit transients are considered additionally.

Introduction: Since 1996, Dr. James Norman has successfully performed mimimally invasive radio-guided parathyroidectomy(MIRP) using intraoperative nuclear mapping with 99m Tc sestamibi scanning and radioactivity detection probe. Objectives: We aimed to introduce this new surgical technique and evaluate it's efficacy by our own experiences. Method: From May to October 1999, five consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism underwent parathyroidectomy by using modified MIRP technique. 99m Tc sestamibi scanning was performed 1.0 or 1.5 hour before operation. After intraoperative localization of the tumor under the guidance of quantitative gamma counting with a NEVIGATOR probe, an unilateral small skin incision(3.0-4.0cm) was placed. Without a skin flap, the strap muscle was directly divided with the use of a Harmonic scalpel. After careful dissection, the parathyroid tumor was removed. Result: In all patients, a single adenoma could be easily detected and removed by this new technique. Mean incision length was 3.2cm(3.0-4.0cm) and operative time ranged from 40 to 110minute. All the patients were discharged within 2 days of surgery without any complication. Conclusion: This new operative technique could become the most minimally invasive alternative to the standard operative procedure for parathyroid adenoma.
GPU 상에서 웨이블릿 변환을 이용한 압축된 볼륨 데이터의 렌더링 기법

볼륨 데이터는 3 차원 공간상의 모든 정보를 저장하기 때문에, 이를 렌더링하기 위해서는 수백 메가에서 수 기가에 달하는 대 용량의 데이터를 처리해야 한다. 따라서 대용량의 볼륨데이터를 압축하는 것이 필수적인데 다양한 압축 기법 중 높은 압축률과 빠른 복원 능력으로 인해 웨이블릿 변환을 응용한 다양한 방법들이 제안되고 있다. 하지만 현재까지 제안된 볼륨 압축 기법은 압축의 복원이 시스템 메모리 상에서 이루어지므로 CPU 와 GPU(Graphic Processing Unit)간의 데이터 전송량과 그래픽 메모리 절약면에서 큰 이득이 없다. 이에 본 논문은 웨이블릿 압축을 적용한 볼륨데이터를 GPU 상에서 실시간으로 복원 및 렌더링함으로써 그래픽 메모리 보다 평균 13.배 큰 크기의 볼륨 데이터를 처리할 수 있는 효과적인 렌더링 기법을 제안한다.

Introduction: The surgical treatment of Graves' disease has several advantage such as rapid and long lasting therapeutic effect, relatively low incidence of postoperative hypothyroidism and recurrence. Because of less frequent but serious postoperative complications, the operation have not been casually used for treatment of Graves' disease. Hypoclacemia, hoarseness and hematomas are common complications after operative treatment. However, the causative mechanisms of these complications have not been well explained. Objective: We aimed to analyze the risk factors affecting the occurance of complications in surgical treatment for Graves' disease and to evaluate what are the causative mechanisms of postoperative complications. Patients and Methods: From January 1985 to December 1998, a total of 668 surgically treated patients for Graves' disease were enrolled in this study. The incidence of postoperative complications were analyzed in relation to types of surgery, preoperaive preparation, specimen weight, bleeding amount and remnant weight. Results: Postoperative complication was developed in 108(16.2%) of 668 patients. The most common complication was transient hypocalcemia in 85 cases(12.7%). Other complications were: Hematoma in 9 cases(1.3%), transient hoarseness in 5 cases(0.7%), permanent hypocalcemia in 6 cases(0.9%), permanent hoarseness in 3 case(0.4%). The important etiologic factors affecting the occurance of complications were preoperative preparation, perioperative thyroid weight, and remnant thyroid weight. Since 1993, the incidence of complication was more decreased than that in before. Conclusion: To decrease the incidence of postoperative complications of Graves' disease, the patients should be selected carefully, sufficient preoperative preparation should be achieved, and the operation should be performed by well-experienced surgeons.
