Norfloxacin complexes of Fe2+, Cu2+ and Al3+ have been prepared as solids. The stoichiometry of the complexes has been established. IR investigation indicates the metal-ligating sites in norfloxacin. The bioactivities of complexes all lower than that of norfloxacin. The solubilities and partition coefficients have been measured as a function of temperature. The data are used to evaluate the thermodynamic parameters deltaG, deltaH, deltaS for the solute transfer process and compared with the parent quinolone, norfloxacin. The existence of such complexes is discussed in the light of quinolone mode-of-action theories.

Lectin from mistletoe (Viscum coloratum) were obtained by salt fractionation, gel filtration and anion exchange chromatography. A molecular weight of about 60,OOOD has been determined by SDS-PAGE and two basic subunits which have molecular weights of 33,000D and 28,000D are linked by a disulfide bond. The partially purified mistletoe lectins agglutinated human B erythrocytes. Agglutinating activity was relatively stable at varied pH(3.77-8.71) and at temperature range of 0-40oC and not affected by 9 metal ions. Galactose, lactose and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine inhibited agglutinating activity of lectin. Lectin from mistletoe was more mitogenic to murine lymphocytes than concanavalin A.

Lectin from mistletoe(Viscum coloratura) fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum for 1,2,3 days were obtained by salt fractionation, gel filtration, anion exchange chromatography and SDS-PAGE, and compared with the lectin from unfermented mistletoe. The new lectin of molecular weight of about 18,500D from fermented mistletoe was identified.

Water extracts of Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus (ADA) fruits were used to treat hPBMC to determine the mechanisms for the immunomodulatory effects. The secretion level of various cytokines including Th-1 type (IL-2, L-12, $IFN-{\gamma}$ and $TNF-{\alpha}$) and Th-2 type (IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10) were measured using ELISA. A significant increase of Th-1 type cytokine secretion was observed in the presence of extract while Th-2 cytokine, IL-6 was suppressed. Our results suggest that ADA fruit extract may influence the anticancer immune responses towards a predominance of Th-1 cytokines in the immune system.

Authors tried to investigate the relationship between sasang constitutions and hypnotizability in this study for the first time. HGSHS-K(Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility-Korean Version) were administered to 121 male soldiers(21.8 65yr) in the army. And then 63 of them completed QSCC II(Questionnaire for the Sasang Constitution Classification II). The results were as follows ; 1) The mean score of HGSHS-K was 7.39 1.77. 2) There were 32 high hypnotizable subjects(HGSHS-K score 8), and 29 low hypnotizable subjects(HGSHS-K score 7). 3) There were 22 So-Yang, 19 So-Eum, 22 Tae-Eum, no Tae-Yang subjects according to classification of QSCC II 4) There were no statistically significant differences in hypnotizability between So-Yang, So-Eum, and Tae-Eum groups(p=0.549).

N/A Backgrouds: Twent five years have passed since the opening of the first pain clinic in korea, in 1973 at Yonsei University Hospital. The number of pain clinics are gradually increasing in recent times. It is important to plan for future pain clinics with emphasis on improving the quality of pain management. Therefore we reviewed the patients in our hospital to help us in planning for the future of our pain clinic. Methods: We analyzed 2656 patients who had visited our Kim Chan Pain Clinic, accordance to age, sex, disease, and type of treatment block, from July 1996 to August 1997. Results: The prevalent age group was in the fifties, 27.3%, seventy years and older compromised 9.2%. The most common disease were as follows: lower back pain(46.2%); cervical and upper extremities pain(23.1%); trigeminal neuralgia(7.2%); and hyperhydrosis(5.8%) Both nerve blocks and medication were prescribed as treatment. Lumbar epidural block(16.3%) and stellate ganglion block(15.6%) were the most frequent blocks performed among various nerve blocks. Among nerve block under C-arm guidance, lumbar facet joint block(24.4%) and lumbar root block(22.5%) were performed most frcquently. Trigeminal nerve block(18.4%), thoracic(17.0%) and lumbar sympathetic ganglion block(11.4%) were next most prevalent blocks performed frequent block. Conclusions: Treatments at our hospital were focused on nerve blocks and medications prescriptions. Nerve blocks are of particular importance in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain. However in future, to raise the quality of pain management, we need to fucus on a multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary team approach.

Stems and roots of Acanthopanax koreanum Nakai were extracted with water and treated on immune cells in order to determine their immunomodulatory activites. Various Th-1 type cytokines were measured using ELISA including interleukin (IL)-2, IL-12, interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) secreted by dendritic cells, Tcells, intestinal epithelial cells, natural killer cells, and macrophages. As a result, there was a significant increase in IL-12 and IFN-γ, secretion, but there was no change in the secretion of TNF-α. Additionally T-cells slightly increased the secretion of IL-2, but there was a significant increase of IL-2 in intestinal epithelial cells. Therefore, our results suggest that A. koreanum Nakai may act as an immunomodulator by stimulating the cell-mediated immunity which can help the immune system defend against infections or cancer cells.
