        박수정,박춘식,임대현,이상운,장소영,유솔,김성렬,Park, Su Jung,Park, Choon sik,Lim, Dae hyun,Lee, Sang woon,Jang, So young,Yu, Sol,Kim, Sung Roul 한국환경과학회 2020 한국환경과학회지 Vol.29 No.1

Asthmatics are more susceptible to fine particulate matters (PM2.5), compared to the general population. It has been reported that indoor PM2.5 is mainly generated by combustion of fossil fuels, meat or fish In particular, asthmatics are known to be more susceptible to indoor PM2.5 because 65~95% of child or adult asthmatics stay inside the house. Thus, understanding the association between indoor activity patterns and variations in indoor PM2.5 levels is important. The purpose of this study is to determine the distribution of hourly indoor PM2.5 concentrations in asthmatics' homes, and to evaluate its association with pan-frying cooking activity patterns, the most common PM2.5 emission related activity. From November 2017 to February 2018, real-time PM2.5 concentrations were measured in the living room of each asthmatic's house (n = 35) for three weeks at 1 minute intervals. At the same time, self-reported daily activity patterns, hourly proportion (%) of cooking activities, were also recorded every hour over three weeks for each patient. In this study, we provided quantitative evidence that the distribution patterns of indoor hourly PM2.5 concentrations were associated with indoor cooking activities, especially in the homes of adult asthmatics. In addition, we observed that PM2.5 emitted by pan-frying could maintain even over up to 2 hour lagtime.

Vol.63 No.2

This study examines a strange murder case in Toni Morrison’s Jazz that has received inadequate attention from critics and readers. In the book, a 50-year-old Joe murders his teenage lover, Dorcas, with impunity; nobody actually sees him shoot her, and she refuses to name her killer to give Joe a chance to get away. Her last act is to “love something other than herself so much,” dying for the “other.” At its most extreme, this act is hospitality toward the “absolutely other,” someone Derrida and Levinas both describe as being beyond our knowledge and understanding. Dorcas’s friend Felice, who witnesses Dorcas’s willing death and delivers her last word for Joe, encourages him to engage in a new love relationship with his wife. At the same time, however, her very existence (Felice means “happiness”) makes this difficult reparation and redemption temporary and fragile. The novel’s open ending―the lack of a resolution despite its seemingly happy ending―invites its readers to retell the story, which is Morrison’s way of being hospitable to them.

Vol.24 No.2

This study examines the correspondence between form and content in Karen Hesse`s verse-novels, Out of the Dust (1997) and Witness (2001). The former consists of poetic monologues of the protagonist narrater, Billie Jo, a 13-year-old girl, while the latter features 11 characters` dramatic lines which are also written in free verse. They both deal with a specific place and period of American history: the 1930s Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl in Out of the Dust and 1924 Vermont where the Ku Klux Klan exerted their power on ordinary people of a small town in Witness. Out of the Dust contains poetic forms, styles, spaces and images that artfully agree with its contents while in Witness voices of people with different age, race, gender and social status are intersected in both poetic and dramatic styles. Their characters` personal narratives provide today`s readers with critical perspectives on, and possible answers to, historical problematics when they go through environmental disasters and racial hatred respectively in Out of the Dust and Witness. It turns out that Hesse`s poetic forms serve the purpose of her historical narratives.

        “Never Break Them in Two”

Vol.55 No.1

This paper explores the nature of spirituality endorsed in Toni Morrison’s Paradise, a spiritual work in a couple of aspects. Its utopian all-black town, Ruby, represents the spirit over, or without, the body. This spiritual, puritanical community proves to be based on the principles of separation and exclusion, according to its racial and gender standards. The second prominent community called the Convent consists of five socially and emotionally deprived women. This Catholicism-governed order seems to be congruent with Ruby in its fear of carnal love and desire. However, the Convent is built on its previous owner’s pursuit of physical pleasure and indelible obscenity, which is dramatically revealed by its maidservant Consolata’s love affair with Deacon, one of the recognized leaders of Ruby. After her encounters with Lone, a midwife and folk medicine practitioner, and a mysterious demi-god visitor, Consolata comes to the knowledge of a whole spirituality that neither separates spirit and body nor positions one over the other. As a new Mother filled with the “body-spirit,” she is empowered to heal herself and other women, who become no longer haunted by their traumatic pasts. By suggesting this corporeal spirituality, Morrison shows a possibility of Paradise, which is an earthly endeavor towards non-exclusive and undichotomizing ways of thinking and practices.

Vol.18 No.1

Chang-rae Lee`s third novel Alofi has contributed to its author`s newly granted title as a writer who deals with the "universal" as opposed to particular, ethnic concerns. This paper argues that Aloft does represent the "universal," not with regard to its white male protagonist Jerry Battle, but with regard to its calls for facing one`s family as the "absolutely other" as Emmanuel Levinas would define it. Jerry "declines the Real" when he encounters familial difficulties of which the beginning was the relationship with his late wife Daisy Han, who came to him as the destitute, denuded "face" of the other. It is, however, the additional death of the other that fundamentally disturbs Jerry`s "being" and changes his attitude towards his family and life. His daughter Theresa, disease stricken, sacrifices herself for her unborn baby, so she calls him to face the present of his family and the past related to Daisy`s death. Theresa`s substitutive death beyond Jerry`s knowledge and understanding ultimately invests him with the one responsible for the other, the subject "response-able" to the other`s order of "Thou shalt not kill." A Levinasian way of reading Aloft will call its readers to face their family as a neighbor who needs their care and responsibility, and a persecutor who even demands their taken-for-granted place at home.

"환대"로서의 사랑: 토니 모리슨의 『사랑』과 시적 환대의 (불)가능성

        박수정 ( Su Jung Park ) 한국현대영미소설학회 2015 현대영미소설 Vol.22 No.2

In Toni Morrison’s Love, love resembles ‘hospitality’ that Jacques Derrida has elaborated in several works of his writing, in its deconstructive movement where it reaches to the limit of its meaning, or to the opposite conception such as hate. This study attempts to read Love as a literary response to whether it is or is not possible for Derrida’s “poetic hospitality” to occur in the relationship of “I” and the other. The acts of hospitality are present all over the novel where Bill Cosey’s hotel occupies lives of the main characters as well as its major scenes. The hotel offers its guests “the best good time this side of the law,” which immediately refers to the Jim Crow laws and further implies the conditional laws of hospitality to which Derrida oppose the law of hospitality, that is unconditional, pure hospitality. Cosey’s pedophilic relationship with his second wife Heed represents the perversion and pervertibility of this law of hospitality. On the other hand, Cosey’s granddaughter Christine stands close to unconditional hospitality when she shares her belongings with Heed without asking her name, which verifies the identity of its holder. There is no longer hospitality when these two girls become deeply hostile towards each other, immediately after Heed’s marriage to Cosey. It is when Christine faces the unexpected death of Heed that they are summoned to be hospitable to each other and to Junior who, as a stranger as such, the absolutely other, is responsible for Heed’s death. Lastly, it is Romen, Junior’s sex partner, who embodies the subject hospitable to the other, the self who divides or interrupts himself or herself by making a decision for and by the other.
