        2차로도로 평균 통행속도-총지체율-교통량 관계 곡선 재정립

        PURPOSES : Two-lane highways have one lane in each direction, and lane changing and passing maneuvers take place in the opposing lane depending on the availability of passing sight distance. 2001 Korea Highway Capacity Manual (KHCM) is classified into two classes of two-lane highways (Type I, II), and average travel speed and time-delayed rate are used as measures of effectiveness (MOEs). However, since existing two-lane highways have both uninterrupted and interrupted traffic flow-system elements, a variety of free-flow speeds exhibits in two-lane highways. In addition, it is necessary to check if the linear-relationship between volumes and time-delayed rate is appropriate. Then, this study is to reestablish the relationship between average travel speed, time-delayed rate, and flow. METHODS : TWOPAS model was selected to conduct this study, and the free-flow speeds of passenger cars and the percentage of following vehicles observed in two-lane highways were applied to the model as the input. The revised relationships were developed from the computer simulation. RESULTS : In the revised average travel speed vs. flow relationship, the free-flow speed of 90km/h and 70km/h were added. It shows that the relationship between time delayed-rate and flow appeared to be appropriate with the log-function form and that there was no difference in time-delayed rate between the free flow speeds. In addition to revise the relationships, the speed prediction model and the time-delayed rate prediction model were also developed. CONCLUSIONS : The revised relationships between average travel speed, time-delayed rate, and flow would be useful in estimating the Level of Service(LOS) of a two-lane highway.

        Saving Space in a Dense City: When Designers Should Consider the New Nano-Interchange

        In the dense cities of developing countries, freeway designers need to provide large capacities in small areas. The nanointerchange,a new system interchange, attempts to address this challenge. The authors designed each alternative at 35, 45, and 55mph ramp design speeds. The designs revealed that the nano-interchange saves space for any given ramp speed, and the construction plus right-of-way costs may not be much higher than the four-level. Operation estimations showed small travel time savings for the four-level interchange at any particular design speed. Safety evaluations indicated that the nano-interchange will likely cause more reported collisions at ramp junctions. Overall, designers should consider the nano-interchange when they want to keep ramp design speeds higher, but designers willing to reduce ramp design speeds will find the four-level a tough competitor

        The Potential to Implement a Superstreet as an Unconventional Arterial Intersection Design in Korea

        The supply of highway facilities in urban and suburban areas across South Korea has not kept pace with automobile growth,resulting in traffic congestion, and congested roads have contributed to worsen operation and safety problems with high fuel consumption. Traffic agencies and engineers in South Korea have focused on mitigating congestions through Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), demand managements, and other conventional measures. Unfortunately, these conventional countermeasures were exhausted in Korea to mitigate traffic congestion. From the viewpoint of efficiency and safety, a superstreet might be one of the alternatives to be considered for solving traffic problems. A superstreet is an unconventional intersection which redirects left turn and through movements from side streets. The design concept leads to increase safety by reducing conflict points at a major crossing point and operating like a pair of one-way streets which signals independently control from the both directions. Prior research have reviewed the performance of the implemented superstreets in North Carolina, U.S and showed a significant improvement in operation and safety compared to existing conventional intersection designs. The purpose of this paper is to provide insight on the potential to implement a superstreet as a promising solution for improving mobility and safety in the South Korea. This paper evaluated how a superstreet design effectively and safely handles with given traffic circumstances compared to an existing design. The VISSIM Model was selected to simulate the operations of subject intersections and Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM), developed by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), which performs conflict analysis by processing vehicles trajectory data extracted from micro-simulations, was adopted to evaluate safety estimations. The results showed that the corridor with superstreets have the most effective progression of traffic along the entire road section with the fewest stops and lowest delays. Also it indicated that superstreets would contribute to have a decrease in collisions. The results would suffice to provide traffic agencies and engineers with an effective alternative to improve safety while reducing congestion.

        지방부 2차로도로의 차두시간 분포 모델에 관한 연구

        PURPOSES: This study was done to model the headway distribution of rural two lane roads. METHODS: Time headway data for the various level of traffic volumes was measured in twelve sites. Based on the time headway data,existing seven mathematical models were evaluated and selected by comparing graphically the measured and theoretical distributions andconducting the Chi-square test. RESULTS: The results show that both the Schul model and Composite Model were the most appropriate models of the models. Based on themeasured time-headway distributions, this study proposed a new headway distribution model by the shift of the Schul model. CONCLUSIONS : The shifted Schul model has the ability to describe time headway distirbutons for random, intermediate, and constantheadway states.

        음성 경고의 도로 공사구간 적용 가능성 평가

        도로공사구간의 안전성 증대를 위해 공사구간에 진입하는 운전자에게 전방상황에 대한 사전인지와 적절한 회피행동을 유도할 수 있는 경고정보를 제공하는 것은 효과적인 기술적 대안이 될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 지향성 스피커를 이용하여 운전자에게 음성경고를 제공하여 안전운전을 유도하는 기술의 타당성을 평가하였다. 이를 위해 현장실험을 수행하였으며, 운전자의 경고정보 인지도 및 선호도, 공사구간 접근차량의 속도, 그리고 소음을 평가지표로 설정하여 수집된 자료를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 음성경고가 도로공사구간에 접근하는 운전자의 주위 환기를 위해서 긍정적으로 사용될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 반면 소음으로 인한 부정적인 효과도 발생할 수 있음을 관찰하였다. 따라서 음성 경고 제공 방식에 대한 개선을 통해 음성 정보 제공의 실효성을 증대시킬 필요가 있다. 또한 본 연구의 결과물은 향후 공사구간 안전성 증대를 위한 체계적인 음성경고정보시스템 개발을 위해 유용한 자료로 활용될 것으로 기대된다. Providing a voice alarm to drivers approaching a work zone could be an effective alternative to mitigate the potential safety problems of the work zone. This study conceived a voice alarm with a direction sound speaker and a field test was conducted that evaluated the feasibility of the voice alarm at a highway work zone. During the field study, we carried out on-site driver surveys to obtain drivers’ perception and preference, collected approaching speeds, and measured sound level during the off-peak 2-hour for two days, respectively. The results showed that while the voice alarm has the potential to be an effective tool in improving safety, the alternative appeared to have the negative effect of noise. Further refinement to a voice alarm with a directional speaker is required to improve feasibility, and the results are expected to be utilized as basic data useful for the refinement.
