In this study, GC-MS linked with an automatic thermal desorber was used to quantitatively analyze the odorous and volatile compounds in the gas emitted from a sewage sludge drying facility. In addition, the removal characteristics of these compounds were investigated by using a pilot-scale packed bed wet scrubber. A quantitative analysis for 58 odorous and volatile compounds in the gas was successfully achieved with GC-MS and GC-FPD. The a quantitative analysis revealed the major odorous compounds were hydrogen sulfide and acetaldehyde. In addition, D-type siloxane compounds such as octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6), were quantitatively measured. The concentrations of siloxane compounds measured in the gas were in the range of 4.54- 7.36 ppmv, higher than those in landfill gas. The average removal efficiency of the odorous and volatile compounds in a wet scrubber was 67.37%. D4, D5, and D6, which are hydrophobic compounds, were also removed by as much as 50.68%, 44.56%, and 70.26%, respectively.
Giant Prostatic Urethral Calculus in a Maltese Dog: a Case Report
노다지,정동욱,최수영,이기자 한국임상수의학회 2019 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.36 No.3
A giant prostatic urethral calculus has not been previously reported in dogs and should be distinguished from prostatic calculus. A 7-year-old castrated male Maltese dog with a 2-month history of relapsing hematuria and urinary incontinence with slowly progressing paraphimosis was referred. On abdominal radiography and ultrasonography, there was a giant calculus in the region of prostate or urethra, one left ureteral calculus, one urinary bladder calculus, and two penile urethral calculi. On computed tomography for evaluating the accurate location and planning the surgical approach, the giant calculus was located at the prostatic urethra. The calculi in urinary bladder, prostatic and penile urethra were surgically removed. These calculi were mixed-type of calcium oxalate monohydrate, struvite and calcium phosphate carbonate. On the basis of the urolith analysis and urine bacterial culture results, antibiotics and prescription diet were adjusted. At the 3-month follow-up, there were no clinical sings but paraphimosis was still remained, and ultrasonography revealed newly-formed, small urethral calculi at the prostatic urethra. This is the first report to describe the case of a canine giant prostatic urethral calculus and its clinical signs, diagnostic imaging findings, treatment, and outcome. CT may be useful to assess the accurate location and surgical approach for such calculi.

An 11-year-old, intact male Cocker Spaniel dog was presented with history of abdominal distension, dyspnea for 10 days and lethargy for 1 day. Abdominal radiographs showed decreased serosal detail with abdominal distension. Abdominal ultrasounds revealed gallbladder mucocele with generalized peritonitis showing stellate-like sludge in the gallbladder with echogenic fat degeneration of cranial abdomen and abdominal free fluid containing echogenic materials. Loss of gallbladder wall integrity was shown clearly on computed tomography but ambiguously on ultrasound. Ultrasound-guided abdominocentesis was performed and showed amount of yellowish-bloody peritoneal fluid with vegetable matter and mucoid substance. On peritoneal fluid analysis, bilirubin level was elevated over three times than those of the serum. On exploratory laparotomy, gallbladder rupture and generalized bile peritonitis with intestinal adhesions were confirmed and cholecystectomy with peritoneal lavage was performed. One day after operation, patient died. This report describes delayed clinical symptoms of gallbladder rupture by gallbladder mucocele. In addition, this is the first case report using computed tomography made a diagnosis gallbladder rupture in a dog. Computed tomography might be helpful to diagnose gallbladder rupture.

Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence used for evaluating traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although SWI is being increasingly used in veterinary medicine, there are no systematic studies regarding its use. We aimed to evaluate TBI lesions by using conventional MRI and SWI in 11 dogs and determine the correlation between clinical statusand conventional MRI or SWI fi gs. The modifi Glasgow coma scale (MGCS) at presentation and a previously used MRI grading system (MRGr; grades 1–6) were used to evaluate the brain lesions, and correlations between MGCS score and each MRGr were assessed. Conventional MRI revealed 23 lesions in 11 dogs with variable MGCS scores (range: 11–17). SWI showed comparablefi gs for all of the lesions except for subdural hemorrhage, and it revealed additional lesions in four dogs. The median MRGr was 2 on both conventional MRI and SWI. The MRGr of the conventional MRI assessments and the MGCS scores showed a signifi ant negative correlation (r = −0.685). In conclusion, SWI had better TBI lesion-detection ability, but conventional MRI had a better correlation with early clinical status and subdural hemorrhage. Thus, a combination of conventional MRI and SWI examinations can improve TBI diagnosis in dogs.

The aim of this paper is to compare the characteristics of the T-P removal from synthesized municipal wastewater by electro-coagulation using cylindrical Al and Fe electrode as anode. For this purpose, a concentric circle type electrolysis reactor was used and the operating conditions for T-P removal from synthesized wastewater are as follows; potential 10 V, electrolyte 0.03% NaCl, initial T-P concentration 1.0 ~ 6.0 mg/L and flow rate 1.0 ~ 5.0 L/min. From the experimental results, T-P concentration of treated wastewater was decreased to less than 0.2 mg/L enough to discharge standard and Al electrode showed performance than Fe electrode for T-P removal by electro-coagulation. Optimal conditions for T-P removal to less than 0.15 mg/L which is 75% of discharge standard for large scale municipal wastewater plant (capacity higher than 500 m3/day) were obtained as follows; flow rate 2.503 L/min, and 2.337 L/min, HRT 1.059 min, 1.134 min, for Al and Fe electrode, respectively. Consumed mass of Al and Fe were of 3.76 times and 8.90 times respectively, were obtained to removed T-P at optimal conditions with potential 10 V, and 0.03% NaCl as electrolyte.
