21세기의 우수과학기술 인재를 양성한다는 목표아래 지난95년 개원한 광주과학기술원은 세계적인 연구중심대학원으로 정보통신공학 등 5개학과를 개설하고 있다. 지난해 11월 제2데 원장으로 취임한 김효근 박사는 "21세기 정보화 국제화 시대에 대비하기 위하여 유엔대학 부설연구소를 유치하고 세계의 우수대학과 인적교류 및 공동연구로 광주과기원 발전에 최선을 다하겠다."고 밝히고 있다.

The purpose of this research is to develop the simple freezing method for sperm cryopreservation in the Sevenband grouper and Kelp grouper. The motility and survival rate were checked to investigate the effects of diluent and cryoprotectant on sperm cryopreservation.In cryopreservation experiments, 300 mM glucose and 15% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were used as a diluent and a cryoprotectant, respectively. As a results of cryopreservation, the motility rate of Sevenband grouper was found to be more than 90%, and that of Kelp grouper was found to be more that 60% in sperm 5 months after cryopreservation.

우리나라의 핵융합실험은 대형의 토카막으로 자기 핵융합실험인데 막대한 국력을 자기 핵융합장치 토카막에만 집중하는 것보다 그 예산의 일부나마 레이저 핵융합연구에 돌려 미래의 에너지 기술전쟁에 대비하는 것이 바람직하다. 10~30년후 레이저 핵융합 분야의 연구에 있어서 기술종속국이 되지 않기 위해선 관련 기반연구에 대한 우선 투자가 필수적이라고 생각한다.

Breast cancer is the most frequently appearing cancer in women, these days. To reduce mortality of breast cancer, periodic check-up is strongly recommended. X-ray mammography is one of powerful diagnostic imaging systems to detect 50~100 um micro-calcification which is the early sign of breast cancer. Although x-ray mammography has very high spatial resolution, it is not easy yet to distinguish cancerous tissue from normal tissues in mammograms and new tissue characterizing methods are required. Recently ultrasound elastography technique has been developed, which uses the phenomenon that cancerous tissue is harder than normal tissues. However its spatial resolution is not enough to detect breast cancer. In order to develop a new elastography system with high resolution we are developing x-ray elasticity imaging technique. It uses the small differences of tissue positions with and without external breast compression and requires an algorithm to detect tissue displacement. In this paper, computer simulation is done for preliminary study of x-ray elasticity imaging. First, 3D x-ray breast phantom for modeling woman's breast is created and its elastic model for FEM (finite element method) is generated. After then, FEM experiment is performed under the compression of the breast phantom. Using the obtained displacement data, 3D x-ray phantom is deformed and the final mammogram under the compression is generated. The simulation result shows the feasibility of x-ray elasticity imaging. We think that this preliminary study is helpful for developing and verifying a new algorithm of x-ray elasticity imaging.
고속열차의 터널 진입시 수직갱의 압력저감효과에 대한 수치해석 연구

고속철도는 대규모의 인원과 물자를 신속하게 운반할 수 있는 친환경 운송수단으로 각광받고 있다. 고속철도는 빠른 속도로 인해 선형이 제한되어 건설되므로 산이 많은 지형에서는 터널이 많아진다. 고속으로 주행중인 열차가 터널에 진입하는 경우에 터널내부에서 압력파가 발생하는데 이로 인해 이명감과 미기압파라는 문제가 발생한다. 터널 내의 압력파를 완화시키기 위한 다양한 방법 중 수직갱을 이용한 방법도 연구되고 있는데 이 연구에서는 TTMA라는 고속철도 터널 공기역학 해석프로그램을 이용하여 수직갱에 의한 수치해석모듈을 개발하였다. 이를 검증하기 위해 실측결과와 비교하여 그 성능을 검증하였으며 기존의 수치해석결과와 비교하여 그 우수성을 검증하였다. High speed railway can transport large quantity of people and commodities in a short time and has become one of the most desirable and environmentally friendly transportation. However, it is hard to have a complicated route for high speed railways, construction of tunnels is essential to pass through a mountain area. When a high speed train enters a tunnel, pressure wave is created in a tunnel and the wave causes micro pressure wave and discomfort to passengers. In order to alleviate pressure wave in a tunnel, constructing a vertical shaft is one of the most efficient ways. This study represents a numerical analysis module, which takes into account the effect of a vertical shaft in a tunnel. The module can be used in a numerical program (TTMA) specialized for aerodynamics in a tunnel, and it was validated by comparing numerical results with various measurements in Emmequerung tunnel and results from numerical analysis using Fluent.
다채널 선형자동흡연장치 부착형 부류연 포집장치의 개발과 평가

The Fishtail Chimney system mounted on 1 channel smoking machine is not appropriate for the routine analysis of sidestream smoke, because of its low repeatability and very long time required for smoke collection. To overcome this inconvenience, we developed a new sidestream smoke collecting apparatus compatible for 8 channel linear smoking machine. An electric motor driven stroke and automatic control system were adopted in this device to maximize convenience and efficiency of its operation. Also, we carried out the international collaborative study on monitoring sidestream smoke analysis to test the performance of this system. From the statistical analysis of the data obtained in our laboratory and other participating labs, it has been indicated that the newly developed sidestream smoke collection apparatus could be applicable to the routine analysis of sidestream smoke.
