        대덕 바이오클러스터의 기술현황: 특허 분석을 중심으로

        KIPRIS patent database was analyzed for identifying the technological status of Daedeok Innopolis Biocluster. It was found that the pattern of activities among various technological areas in Daedeok Biocluster is similar to that of an advanced country rather than those of other cities in Korea. The technological growth in Daedeok Innopolis Biocluster is in the progressive stage, which may be due to the innovative activities rather than the rise in the number of new firms or institutes. The concentration of technology in Daedeok Innopolis Biocluster is a favorable condition for the innovation activities. The trend for the technological concentration was remarkably consistent with the growth curve that a population increases according to the logistic equation. The logistic growth may be represented by the result of competition due to the limited resource allocation and then innovation cluster is corresponding to the ecosystem composed by biological individuals. There is strong competition in Daedeok Innopolis Biocluster in around 2009, so the government might make a policy to encourage the technological diversity for healthy knowledge ecosystem.

        Induction of telomere shortening and cellular apoptosis by sodium meta-arsenite in human cancer cell lines

        The present study assessed the cytotoxicity of sodium meta-arsenite (SMA) on telomere shortening and cellular apoptosis in human A-549, MDA-MB-231 and U87-MG cancer cell lines. Following 2 weeks of 1 μM SMA treatment, population doubling time (PDT) was significantly (P < .05) increased by the inhibition of cell proliferation in all the cancer cell lines compared to that in untreated controls. Level of telomerase activity by relative-quantitative telomerase repeat amplification protocol was significantly (P < .05) downregulated by SMA treatment with significant (P < .05) decrease of both telomerase reverse transcriptase and telomerase RNA component transcripts, responsible for telomerase activity. A significant (P < .05) shortening of telomeric repeats by telomere restriction fragment analysis was consequently observed in SMAtreated cells. Moreover, high incidence of cells with senescence-associated β-glucosidase activity was observed in SMA-treated cells and some cells were also differentiated into adipocytes probably due to the loss of tumorous characterizations. Cellular apoptosis proven by DNA fragmentation was observed, and intrinsic apoptotic transcripts (BAX, caspase 3 and caspase 9) and stress-related transcripts (p21, HSP70 and HSP90) were significantly (P < .05) increased in three cancer cell lines treated with SMA. Based on the present study, SMA treatment apparently induced a shortening of telomere length and cytotoxicity, such as induction of cell senescence, apoptosis and cell differentiation. Therefore, we conclude that SMA treatment at specific concentration can lead to gradual loss of tumorous characterizations and can be considered as a potential anti-cancer drug for chemotherapy treatment.

        Acute Scrotum due to Gallbladder Perforation after a Percutaneous Liver Biopsy

        Acute scrotum can occur as a complication of various procedures, such as open, laparoscopic surgeries or diagnostic procedures. We present an unusual case of acute hemiscrotum due to inadvertent gallbladder injury following an ultrasound-guided liver biopsy.

        건강증진센터를 방문한 성인 남성에 있어서 전립선 용적과 대사성 인자, 인체측정학적 지수와의 상관성

        Purpose: We investigated the relationship of prostate volume with metabolic and anthropometric parameters in men who visited a health promotion center. Materials and Methods: From January 2004 to July 2007, among 16,236 men between 30 to 69 years old who visited our health promotion center for a general check-up, 1,033 men(6.4%) agreed to have their prostate evaluation included in this study. They underwent anthropometric measurements, basic laboratory tests, and transrectal ultrasonography. We evaluated the relationship of prostate volume with metabolic and anthropometric factors. Results: In bivariate analysis, prostate volume positively correlated with height, weight, body mass index(BMI), body surface area(BSA), serum prostate-specific antigen(PSA), triglyceride, and blood pressure, and negatively correlated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C). In multivariate analysis, age, BSA, serum PSA and HDL-C significantly correlated with prostate volume, whereas BMI did not(p=0.765). Prostate volume in patients with metabolic syndrome(28.0ml) was significantly larger than those without(25.4ml), but there was no difference in PSA (p=0.976). Conclusions: Because height positively correlated with prostate volume (p=0.010), BSA(calculated as height0.725xweight0.425x0.007184) but not BMI (as: weight/height2) correlated with prostate volume in multivariate analysis.         Giant Fibroepithelial Polyp of the Glans Penis

        Fibroepithelial polyps are a benign neoplasm of mesodermal origin that usually occur in the urinary tract. However, a giant fibroepithelial polyp of the glans penis is very rare and is strongly linked with long-term condom catheter use. In this article, we report a case of a 45-year-old man who presented with a giant fibroepithelial polyp originating from the glans penis. Physical examination showed a 6x3 cm sized mass lesion overlying the ventral surface of the glans near the urethral meatus without urethral communication. For the previous 10 years, the patient had been required to use a condom catheter secondary to paraplegia sustained during a T12-L1 spinal cord injury. He was successfully treated by wide local excision of the mass and suprapubic cystostomy placement. There was no evidence of recurrence after 12 months of follow-up.

      • 잎담배의 재배방법에 따른 생장 분석에 대하여

        황색종 잎담배의 생장분석에서 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 개량말칭의 생장곡선은 대수변환하여 2차 회귀식에, 기타 작부는 Gomuertz방정식과 유사하였다. 2. 건물량에 있어서 최대생장기의 시점은 개량말칭의 경우에 이식후 50일경, 타 작부는40일경이고 최대생장기간은 모두 25일 였다. 3 건물량에 있어서 최대생장기의 생장속도는 개량, 일반, 나지작의 순서로 감소하였다. 4. 파기가 늦을수록 최대생장기 동안의 생장량은 증가했다. 5. 엽면적의 최대생장기간은 건물중에 비하여 약2일 단축되고 5일 정도 빠르게 나타났다. The growth of flue-cured tobacco was analyzed with the mathematical treatment. The results are summarized as followings: 1. The growth curve was fitted to the quadratic polynomial equation in improved-mulching cultivation, blot to the Gompertz equation in the other cultivations. 2. The initial point of the maximum growth phase for dry weight was about 50 days after transplanting in improved-mulching cultivation, but about 40 days in the other cultivations, and the maximum growth period was for 25 days in all cultivations. 3. The growth rate of the maximum growth period in dry weight decreased in the order of improved-mulching cultivation, mulching cultivation, and non-mulching cultivation. 4. A relative growth amount in the maximum growth period was higher in later sowing. 5. The length of maximum growth was 5 days shorter in leaf area than in dry weight. The maximum growth phase was 7 days earlier in leaf area than in dry weight.
