A Study on Intelligibility of Korean English in Cross-cultural Context
김연범,이현구 한국영어어문교육학회 2013 영어어문교육 Vol.19 No.2
According to Pickering (2006), the studies of intelligibility between NNS and NNS are still in an infant stage, which challenges this research. The purpose of this study is to measure the intelligibility of Korean English in a small scale of multi-cultural context in the Philippines from a perspective of a Korean speaker. A total of 14 speakers and listeners participated in the study. Among them, three Korean speakers were enrolled in APNTS (Asia Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary): Speaker 1 (beginner), Speaker 2 (intermediate) and Speaker 3 (advanced). Eleven listeners were in graduate studies in APNTS with at least 500 scores in local English exam. They consisted of NS and NNS students, and measured intelligibility of NNS students (3 speakers). Findings showed that the level of each speaker’s English proficiency influenced on the degree of intelligibility. The Speaker 1 struggled with recognizing hard lexis, and her lack of confident knowledge of lexis influenced negatively on the intelligibility, The Speaker 3 was rated relatively highly in the perception scales, however, her fast speaking rate took the negative role in the intelligibility. The Speaker 2 was rated the most intelligible, especially in his free speech. The result of the study illustrated that it was not only speaker’s English proficiency but also listeners’ proficiency that is connected to the intelligibility. Intelligibility was mutually interactive and depending on the speaker-listener variables.

The purpose of this study is to analyze L2 learners’ writing with diverse cultural backgrounds studying in ESL classes and to identify different aspects in using topical depths of the topical subjects. A total of 53 Asian adult L2students who applied for the entrance exam for a theological seminary in the Philippines participated in this research. They consisted of 17 Myanmars, 7Chinese, 18 Koreans, and 11 Filipinos. This study assumed that there would be some different aspects in using topical depths of the topical subjects, as one of the factors that make the writing to be coherent, among the nationality groups and between the lower and higher scored groups. The findings of this study are as follows. First, there was no difference in the percentage of topical depths relatively computed by the number of clauses in any compared groups. Secondly, in correlation analysis, no significant relation was taken noted in relation to the topical depths or the percentage of the topical depths over the number of the clauses. Thirdly, the number of words affects positively on the number of clauses, the number of topical depths, and the scores. It means that sufficient number of words may cause the healthy number of topical depths, which may be positively reflected in the scores.

There are many potential dangers around our life, but we are laking in the consciousness of safety because accidents do no happen frequently. If an accidents occurs, an ability to deal with it is so weak that it can be enlarges to a disaster. Therefore it is important to accustom ourselves to manage dangers and this can be realized by traing. In this study, the traditional traing methodologies are compared and analyszed in order to find an efficient traing way for the public. Also, we propose a traing method by using UCC(User Created Contest) which is a growing communication and content tool in the Internet environment nowadays.
