Vol.5 No.3
This research is aimed to examine the differences through comparative analysis of the Earth Science contents in the science textbooks between Korea and DPRK. The contents of level and scope in science textbooks between Korea and DPRK are analysed by TIMSS frameworks. The results of this research are as follows : 1. The science textbooks of DPRK is lower in quality of paper, printing to that of Korea, and the illustrations, editing design in the textbooks of DPRK are fewer, monochromic and monotonous while those in Korea. 2. The contents of Earth Science in DPRK's science textbooks rank 37.0%, but those of Korea's science textbooks rank 25.5% of the whole textbooks. The learning units related to Earth Science are generally similar to the level and scope in science textbooks between Korea and DPRK. The type of inquire activities in the textbooks of DPRK largely takes on the model experiment, and it was shown that the number of experiments directly made by children is very small compared to Korea' textbooks. 3. There are lots of differences in Earth Science learning terms and predicates used in the textbooks between Korea and DPRK.
Vol.20 No.3
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of portfolio instruction on the creativity and scientific inquiry ability of 6th-grade students in science classroom. Four classes were sampled from an urban elementary school in southern part of Seoul. Two classes were assigned to experimental group and the other two classes to control group. Portfolio instruction was administered to the experimental group for 10 weeks, and traditional instruction to the control group. Data on students' creativity and scientific inquiry ability were collected prior to and after the treatment for both groups. Students' perception on portfolio instruction was investigated with experimental group after the treatment. The results of this study are as follows: (1) Portfolio instruction had a significant positive effect on creativity; (2) Students' originality, one of sub-domain of creativity, showed marked increase after portfolio instruction; (3) Portfolio instruction had a significant positive effect on scientific inquiry ability; (4) Integrated inquiry ability, a sub-domain of inquiry ability, improved meaningfully after portfolio instruction; and (4) Students' perception on portfolio instruction is very positive.

This study was carried out to analyze terms in primary science textbooks. The results of the research are as follows. 1. The higher-grade science textbooks use more types of categories and less definitions for terms. Only 14% of definitions for terms are showed in textbooks, and no more than 0.4~0.6 definitions shows the shortage of definitions for terms in one class content. 2. The definitions by contract, which forms 68%, was the highest in elementary science textbooks. And the dictionary definitions, which are 62%, was the highest in experiment-observation textbooks. 3. The most used type of definitions is the way which is used for a case or a indicating methods, and its rate is increasing steadily. And its rate was 76% of the whole of terms. 4. Terms used in energy field are few as compared with terms of other fields. Each field has completely different ways of defining terms and presenting content in textbooks to other fields.
