Experiments were carried out in order to study the relationship of thyroid activity to growth potentiality in chicken. Further work was also performed to determine thyroid secretion rate and body gain of the different sexes. A correlation coefficient of 0.241 in the male and 0.237 in the female were obtained between daily gains and daily thyroid $^{131}I$ out put rate in the chicken. The correlation was not statistically significant, but the chicken with a lower thyroid activity tended to gain faster than those with a higher thyroid activity. The average daily gain of the female(12.13 gram) was significantly higher than the male (9.28 gram). The average daily thyroid secretion rate of male tended to have a higher rate, but it was not statistically significant.

An experiment was performed in order to investigate the effects of daily oral administration of propylthiouracil per kg body weight on the metabolic rate and the thyroidal activity in ten, Korean native goats by using the Benedict-Roth Metabolism apparatus and the radioactive iodine-131 in the average environmental temperature at $5.7^{\circ}C$. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The mean metabolic rates of the treated group and the control group were $34.5Kcal./m^2/hr.$ and $33.8Kcal./m^2/hr.$ 2) The peak of thyroidal uptake $I^{131}$ rate in the treated group was 20.12% in 48 hrs., following administration of $I^{131}$ and it was 22.62% in the control group in 96 hrs., Highly significant difference was observed(P<0.01).
Plasma Progestin Concentration In Artificially Maintained Pregnancy

The changes of the plasma progestin concentations in normal pregnancy and artificially maintained pregnancy of the rabbits by hormonal replace therapy after induced ovulation and insemination on Day 1, followed by ovariectomy on Day 2, were checked by direct measurement, competitive protein-binding assay, from the time of mating through to parturition. The results obstained in this experiment can be summarized as follows: (i) The mean concentration of progestin in normally pregnant rabbits increased from $1.7{\sim}2.7$ ng/ml on Day 1 to $19.8{\sim}25.3$ ng/ml on Days $13{\sim}15$ and declined slowly thereafter until term. (ii) The progesterone levels in artificially maintained pregnancy by hormonal replacement therapy showed quite a similar pattern to that in normally pregnant rabbits. 동물에서 정상적인 임신유지를 함에 필요한 홀몬의 양을 측정하기 위하여 토끼에서 인공수정을 실시한 다음날 양쪽 ovary를 제거하고, 홀몬대치요법(replace therapy)에 의해서 인공적으로 임신상태를 분만시까지 유지시키면서 competitive protein-binding assay method을 이용하여 혈중 progestin의 농도를 측정하여 정상 임신토끼와 비교하였던 바 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1) 정상임신토끼에 있어서 혈중 progestin의 평균 농도 변화는 제 1일에 $1.7{\sim}2.7$ ng/ml으로 시작해서 차차 증가되어 제$13{\sim}15$일까지는 $19.8{\sim}25.3$ ng/ml까지 상승하였다가 그후 분만시까지 서서히 감소되었다. 2) 홀몬 대치요법에 의해서 인공적으로 임신을 유지시킨 토끼의 혈중 progestin 농도는 정상토끼의 progestin 농도의 변화와 매우 비슷한 변화곡선을 나타내었다.

난소를 제거한 가토에 있어서 부신에서 분비되는 oestrogen이 착상에 충분할 가능성이 있음에 비추어 이 실험에서는 가토에서 oestrogen의 근원이 되는 난소와 부신을 함께 제거하여도 착상이 여전히 일어나며 임신이 유지되는가를 실험하였다. 이 실험결과는 다음 두가지 점을 밝혀주었다. 1. 부신에서는 가토의 착상에 충분한 oestrogen을 분비하지 아니하였다. 2. 가토의 착상과 임신유지는 oestrogen 없이도 가능하였다.

In native and Saanen goats, the thyroidal iodine uptake rate and its correlation between thyroidal activity and body gain were studied. The results were as follows: 1. The thyroidal iodine-131 uptake rate in native and Saanen goats were 10.46% and 21.26%, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01). 2. The correlation coefficients between monthly body gain and thyroidal iodine-131 uptake rate were -0.32 and -0.46 in native and Saanen goats, respectively. The correlations were negative and not significant between the rates.
토끼의 임신에 대한 Halothane 및 Pentobarbital Sodium 마취의 영향

The effects of halothane and pentobarbital sodium anaesthesia in implantation and maintenance of pregnancy were compared in the rabbit ovariectomized the day after insemination and given steroid replacement therapy. The result has shown that halothane anaesthesia did not favour the overall process of implantation or foetal development, compared with pentobarbital sodium.

This study was carried out to investigate the action of ATP, which has been known as the neurotransmitter of noncholinergic- and nonadrenergic-nerve, on the motility of immature pig uterine smooth muscle. The results were summarized as follows; 1. The contraction and the contractile responses caused by ATP were increased in a dose-dependent manner between the concentration of ATP $10^{-6}M$ and $10^{-3}M$. The maximal contractile effect was appeared at the concentration of ATP $10^{-3}M$ and it was 70.2% of 100mM K contraction. 2. The contractile responses induced by ATP ($10^{-4}M$) were not blocked by the pretreatment with cholinergic receptor blocker, atropine ($10^{-6}M$). 3. The contractile responses induced by ATP ($10^{-4}M$) were not blocked by pretreatment with ${\alpha}$-adrenergic receptor blocker, phentolamine ($10^{-6}M$) and ${\beta}$-adrenergic receptor blocker, propranolol ($10^{-6}M$). 4. The contractile response induced by ATP ($10^{-4}M$) was not blocked by the pretreatment with $H_1-receptor$ blocker, pyrilamine ($10^{-6}M$) and $H_2-receptor$ blocker, cimetidine ($10^{-6}M$).

Progesterone immunogen has been synthesized and its melting point, Rf-value, UV and IR spectrum have been measured to develope the essential step in antisera production against low molecular weight substance. Mixed anhydride reaction was used to conjugate $11{\alpha}$-hydroxy-progesterone with succinic anhydride. Melting point of one intermediate compound was $156^{\circ}C$, and Rf-value was 0.41 in benzene : acetone : methanol (5 : 5 : 2). Maximum absorbance was measured at 242nm and ${\varepsilon}$ was $1.641{\times}10^4cm^2/mole$. Loss of hydroxy group was observed at 3450nm, and carbonyl group was appeared at 1160nm, 1250nm and 2960nm. These results indicated that the intermediate compound was progesterone hemisuccinate. Maximum absorbance of progesterone bovine-serum albumin(BSA) conjugate was observed at 250nm. Molar ratio of progesterone to BSA was average 15.4 on UV spectrum.
가토 척출 자궁근의 운동성에 관한 연구 V. Acetylcholine, PGF<sub>2</sub><sub>α</sub> 및 Oxytocin의 자궁 수축기전에 관한 연구

The effect of acetylcholine, oxytocin and prostaglandin $F_{2{\alpha}}$ ($PGF_{2{\alpha}}$) on cyclic nucleotide levels in estrogen-primed rabbit whole uterus were studied in the presence and absence of 1-methyl-3-isobutyl xanthine (MIX), a phosphodiestrase inhibitor, and indomethacin, a prostagandin inhibitor. In the absence of MIX, acetylcholine increased guanosine 3', 5'-cyclic monophosphate (cGMP), but had no effect on adenosine 3', 5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) levels. In contrast, oxytocin had no influence on cGMP, but decreased cAMP levels. $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ increased cGMP and decreased cAMP levels. MIX increased both cAMP and cGMP levels. Oxytocin and $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ further increased cGMP levels, indicating activation of guanylate cyclase activity. The ratio of cAMP/cGMP was decreased by uterine stinulants both in presence and absence of MIX. Indomethacin elevated cAMP and cGMP revels. The effects of uterine stimulants in the presence of indomethacin on cyclic nucleotide levels were varied from tissue to tisse. In general, oxytocin decreased cGMP and $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ increased cAMP/cGMP levels, but the effects were statisically nonsignicficant. The cAMP/cGMP ratio was increased by uterine stimulant in the presence of indomethacin. In conclusion, uterine stimulants eased cAMP/cGMP ratio which indicates that the uterine stimulants have opposing effects on adenylate cyclase and guanylate cyclase activities. The endometrium plays a role in the regulation of cyclic nucleotide levels and uterine contraction by means of PG synthesis. Indomethacin has an unknown activities besides both of PG synthetase and phosphodiesterase inhibitions.
