Here we show, current total nitrogen stocks and burial rate of the entire coastline of South Korea, through long-term field survey accommodated with remote sensing. To cover the entire coast of South Korea twenty intertidal flats were targeted. Textural type classification results from remotely sensed imagery and field-based classification were highly correlated (p < 0.01). Generally, mud content was significantly correlated with total nitrogen stocks (p < 0.01), represented a significant environmental parameter for controlling sedimentary total nitrogen stocks across the targeted intertidal flats. In addition, riverine input of major rivers reflected a high terrestrial input for nitrogen source to adjacent tidal flats. Using the long-term field survey combined with remote sensing, we estimated the total nitrogen stocks (1,522,082 Mg N) and burial rate (8,192 Mg N yr-1) in South Korea. Furthermore, the environmental value for total nitrogen removal of the tidal flats along South Korea estimated a total economical value of 232 Million $ yr-1. This study presents the potential for nitrogen sink in tidal flats along the entire coast, providing current status and economical benefits on the removal of nitrogen in tidal flats along the coast of South Korea.
