Vol.12 No.1

This paper investigates the expressive-writing effect in Alice Walker's The Color Purple. This work is a self-confession of her own pain. The main character, Celie, writes down her life to mail a letter to God since she suffers from the trauma of the past and loneliness. In the processing of rewriting the past, she understands herself in the past and figures out the trauma of the past and heals herself. For her, letters are not only a means of a way out but also a therapeutic act. Shug and Nettie are the most influential people in Celie's miserable life. Shug helps Celie to confess her trauma and to express her suppressed emotions. Most of letters written by Celie describe a number of Shug's comforting words to relieve her wounded heart. Also, Nettie's letters make her economically independent and enhance Celie's self-esteem. Writing to God and Nettie provides Celie with an opportunity of looking back on her life and understanding herself. Celie writes down her own feeling in a letter to face the trauma of the past. Celie heals her pain through expressive writing that is the beginning of her journey to independence. The last letters are filled with stories about her growing mature and positive future. For Celie, expressive writing is a powerful tool for curing trauma and leading to a healthy life. .

This paper find out factors which affect to public opinion about health issues on online community in Korea. Also looking at the different diffusion patterns on public and privates issues. We select the most famous and lots of discussion community about health issues, then collect 93 months of data to construct post-reply network. Through the natural language processing, we analyze the message of post and categorize health issues. By social network analysis, we calculate the structural position of each individual. Also, using rare events logistic regression, we measure the influence of peer effect about health issues. The results show that there is a peer effect about the individual talk about health issues. Especially, when the individual who is higher structural position talks a lot on private issue like breast-feeding, whereas the public issue such as vaccine, flu an antibiotics doesn't.

Three Tall Women

Vol.32 No.1

This paper investigates the existentialist philosophy represented in Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women in the light of Nietzschean philosophy. For Albee, death is an inevitable part of life and an existential limitation that humans cannot escape from. Although death is a extreme pain, a finite of life makes one able to embrace every moment of life. Nietzsche hopes that one achieves the self-conquest by generating energy to recover in every moment even though it is full of the pain of life. Albee sets the opening act realistically, Act 2 contains innovative and improbable elements to attenuate the realistic effects of Act 1. In Act 1, Albee portrays A who slips in and out of coherency, resists loss of memory. Whenever she perceives death, she recalls the past. Since the past gives her the illusion of avoiding death, she struggles to remember all the events of her past and at the same time she is frightened when her memory eludes her. Act I depicts a woman who is enveloped by fear of death. In Act 2, there are three women who belong to different ages Unlike the previous Act, A is considered a heroic figure of Nietzsche, Übermench. She wholeheartedly faces up to her life with a mixture of pain, pleasure, regret, and unsatisfaction when she meets the moment of death. A comes to complete existential maturity by embracing her fate that is riddled with adversity.

Vol.66 No.1

This paper analyzes the process and pattern of repressed trauma and violence in Black families centered on the keyword “anger.” Aleshea Harris presents a deep meditation on the ways in which anger generated by trauma spreads to the next generation and how this transfer affects their lives. Is God Is sheds light on the lives of Black twin sisters who suffered burns from a terrible fire set by their father. Mama’s story makes them angry with the man who committed such terrible things against them, and so they set out on a journey to punish him. Mama shows her body, scarred by the burning, and it becomes a trigger that unlocks the sisters’ repressed anger. In anger, they yearn to take revenge on the man who ruined their lives. The sisters’ anger, suppressed until their meeting with Mama, unleashes a violent act of murder that destroys the man. Racine and Anaia were victims of violence, but they later become perpetrators of violence against others. The most tragic aspect of the trauma is that the next generation cannot find a way out of the terrible reality nor understand the true source of their pain. Is God Is deals with how violence reverberates within a family through a story of trauma that tragically dismantles a family in a vicious cycle of unresolved violence.

Vol.64 No.3

Jackie Sibblies Drury goes further in the black diaspora play, which attempted to regain the lost voice of the past and rewrite history, and points out the dangers of racial prejudice. At the same time, it suggests that theater can serve as an ethical space to present a fair view of race. The direction Drury’s play pursues is to properly understand and empathize with others who had the nature of the involuntary inherited trauma heritage. The most important part of drury’s play is to break the repetitive link of racial prejudice and find an opportunity to change for the generation living in the present. Drury reveals the prevalent racial prejudice through the Fairview, and the white mainstream audience realizes that (s)he is the cause of the unknown uncomfortable gaze and anxiety felt by the Fraser family as the play progresses. The audience’s participation, which is the biggest feature of this play and breaks down the concept of traditional plays, is Drury’s unique playwriting method to rethink and change the audience’s perception. This point is the moment that proves the performance that gives the audience a sensory experience at this moment. Drury’s play suggests that the theater needs a broad perspective and ethical change on others, that is, minorities.

Vol.56 No.4

In this study we attempt to examine Karl Jaspers’ existential concept of boundary situation and communication, seeking to provide a better understanding of human existence from an influential American play Our Town. Jaspers argues that the awareness of our finitude gives us the possibility to shape our lives and heighten the meaning of our existence. Also Jaspers considers existential communication to be one of the fundamental aspects of human existence. Jaspers insists that in existential communication philosophizing helps to establish the bond of communication with others in the attainment of authentic selfhood. In Our Town Wilder draws on simple life in Grover’s Corners and the priceless value of life. In Act Ⅲ Emily undergoes boundary situation with childbirth. And she has a chance to experience the lives of the past. She is the only one that fully realizes the meaning of life after her death. Most of the living people fail to realize all of the life potential. In addition, Wilder insists that communication help to strengthen human’s relationships. Also people are conscious of existence with communication to others. Wilder indicates that death is the finitude of our lives. He handles the importance of the value of our lives and that of communication with other people in his works. Also he signifies that communication with someone is the opportunity to maturate. Therefore, this playwright demonstrates Jaspers’ existential concepts of boundary situation and communication in order to deliver significant messages about life and death to the readers and audiences.

Vol.61 No.1

This paper aims to investigate the Nietzsche’s Philosophy in Edward Albee Of Seascape. Albee displays his characters who suffer and live in an absurd world, but he makes them eventually realize the possibility for maturation and change. Albee’s characters stand naked, stripped of illusions. Once naked, they are to stand on the brink of transformation through existential experience. Albee always focuses on the possibility that his characters, in the process of becoming, can overcome their destiny. In Seascape, Albee dramatizes the existential growth of humankind, coping with the human finitude. His characters confront the moment of change and they embody existential awakening to overcome life’s trials. Nietzsche explains the two types of nihilism. One of them is that man believes life is meaningless. The other is that the time of crisis serves as an opportunity to face up to life. Albee explores both what a man ought to be and how a man should treat the rest of life. Charlie and Sarah suffer from the extreme pain of death and the harsh reality. But They eventually realize facing death has the potential for improving the quality of life. Albee does not write merely about the naturalistic evolution of the human species. Rather, he deals with a kind of spiritual evolution of self-awareness(overcoming).

Vol.29 No.6

In 2012, the Korean Ministry of Environment (MOE) added 3 new water quality standards for protection of human health; specifically, regarding 1,4-dioxane, formaldehyde, and hexachlorobenzene. In this study, we assimilated the water quality standards of these 3 substances from other countries, with respect to surface water quality standards for human health protection and drinking water standards. We subsequently investigated how these standard values were derived. 1,4-Dioxane is managed as an environmental standard for human health in Japan, and as a drinking water quality standard in WHO, New Zealand, and Japan with respect to both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects. In New York, the oncogenic effects of formaldehyde in drinking water intake is considered, whereas WHO, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan also assess the non-carcinogenic effects of formaldehyde when setting their standards. USEPA and New York have a water quality standard for human health protection with respect to hexachlorobenzene based on carcinogenic effects. This study focuses on deriving water quality standards for the 3 new substances, or obtaining baseline in formation to revise the values of existing substances in the future.

2008 Journal of the Korean Data Analysis Society Vol.10 No.3

Regarding electronic voting, there are lots of researches on how to satisfy the verifiability of the tabulation of an election so far. However, recently, voter-verifiability becomes more and more important in electronic voting. Universal verifiability, ensuring the correctness of the tabulation, is based on the mix-net proposed by D. Chaum in 1981. Though mix-net, as well as homomorphic encryption and blind signature, is used for on-line electronic voting system, on-line electronic voting system is not used for referendum due to lack of its privacy. Recently, therefore, voter-verifiability is widely discussed in order to make DRE trustworthy. In this paper, we survey the recent DRE voting systems based on paper receipt, analyze them, and compare with each other in terms of security and efficiency.
