2012 Archives of Craniofacial Surgery Vol.13 No.2

Purpose: The typical reconstructive option for the nasal tip is paramedian forehead flap. However, the forehead flap is too bulky for nasal tip reconstruction and does not look natural, and therefore, secondary operations for debulking are required. Methods: We treated a 46-year-old woman who suffered from a nose tip soft tissue defect using a modified paramedian forehead flap. The flap was elevated from the hair line of the forehead and had 3-layered structure. The distal part included skin and subcutaneous tissue, the middle part included frontalis muscle, and the proximal part had periosteum. Results: The nasal tip was not bulky and looked natural in terms of height, shape, and had 3-dimensional structure without debulking procedure. The patient was satisfied with the outcome. Conclusion: The authors' modified paramedian forehead flap may be a useful option for the treatment of nasal tip, columella, and alar defects. With these modifications, the paramedian forehead flap can provide an aesthetically acceptable nasal tip appearance without debulking.

Vol.41 No.3

The purpose of this study is to analyse how differently Shakespeare and Marlowe deal with the shocking event of usurping and killing king in Richard Ⅱ and Edward Ⅱ, and furthermore to clarify their different political attitudes to the medieval tradition of the myth of kingship. According to Michael Evans, the medieval kingship had the divine authority despite it's corruption and even tyranny. Although there was a debate about dethronement of kings who violate God's order, it was believed that only God's judgement can dethrone the king. However, as Phyllis Rackin indicates, Machiavellian discourse coexisted with providential discourse in Elizabethan England. And Shakespeare and Marlowe commonly reveal the illusoriness of the myth of kingship, but there is a great difference between their writings. While Shakespeare doesn't support any particular political discourse using ambiguous and double attitude, Marlowe reveals an apparent political view that violates the myth of kingship and the dignity of ruling order. It seems that this difference comes from the two rival writers' different consciousness of the Elizabethan political reality. As we look into the political perspectives of the two works revealed in the representation of king's dethronement and murder, Edward Ⅱ threatens and even mocks the myth of kingship much more than Richard Ⅱ. Although dramatizing, in Richard Ⅱ, Richard's dethronement and murder which result from his own faults, Shakespeare shows respect to the providential discourse of king's divinity as well as to the power dominating political reality. The myth of kingship must be necessary not only for Richard but for Bolingbroke. On the contrary, Marlowe's Edward is thoroughly and miserably used and mocked, and loses the divine dignity despite his son Edward Ⅲ inherits his political body. Marlowe demystifies the myth of kingship by portraying Edward as a weak human being who hangs over the physical pleasure, and who trembles at the fear of death. Furthermore, the followers of Edward are all the objects of physical desire and we cannot hear the voice which reminds us of the divinity of kingship. Rather the work is filled with those who mocks and laughs at it.

This paper proposes a new frame rate up-conversion method. First, the proposed triple frame-based bidirectional motion estimation method reduce block artifacts in the interpolated frame by solving the wrong motion estimation in the area with similar characteristics. Second, the proposed motion vector smoothing reduces outliers, which result in block artifacts, considering the spatio-temporal neighboring motion vectors. In the experiments, the proposed frame rate up-conversion method improves the average PSNR and SSIM by up to 4.337 dB and 0.089, respectively, compared to the existing methods.

21 Vol.28 No.3

The purpose of this paper is to analyse what political desire is embedded in the main characters`` love in Dido Queen of Carthage. Especially it will be interesting to observe how the contemporary Elizabethan English politic context is connected with the love scenes of the play. This play does not simply present the conflict between love and duty, but the conflict between Aeneas``s colonialism to rebuild Troy and Dido``s desire to attract European hero. What is important is that the conflict between African and European culture represented by the love of Dido and Aeneas does not only justify the imperial desire but reveal the injustice of the imperial desire and the disaster it causes. It is raised as Aeneas``s heroic aspects decline and Dido``s heroism rises. This play seems to emphasize the importance of gods`` will and the fortune of the country rather than individual desire. Aeneas follows Jupiter``s order and leaves Dido to found Rome. It seems to designate that his duty is much greater than the love with a woman. This view makes it possible to insist that Dido``s love is not noble but vain and foolish. Dido and her love become just a means for Aeneas to complete his noble duty. However, we can find another desire through the subversive elements in this play. It is the desire to challenge God, to suspect the monarch``s authority, and to value the individual and the other. This desire is revealed in the sense that Dido obtains the typical Malovian heroism, and in the sense that the gods are portrayed comically and absurdly. Dido becomes the symbolic means to resist the European imperialism, representing exploited Africa.

Vol.36 No.2

Shakespeare's romantic comedies has traditionally been thought to have the traits that are love, happiness, and improbable events, and that derive from Medieval romances. However, the romantic imagination represented in Shakespeare's comedies is based not only on fantastic and unrealistic satisfaction but on innovative and ideal willingness to change the established order and conventions as we can see in the 19th century romanticism. Shakespeare's early comedies such as A Midsummer Night's Dream and As You Like It considerably imitate Medieval romantic features by representing the supernatural and unrealistic elements that result in happy and comic society. But Shakespeare's imagination shows change as it develops into the middle. As the comedies develop, the romantic elements of Medieval romances decrease while the romantic elements of 19th century romanticism increase. The aim of this study is to explore the romantic imagination represented in Twelfth Night which was written right before the great tragedies. In Twelfth Night, we can find an actual willingness that seeks for better society, mocking and ridiculing the irrational and foolish existing society instead of an unrealistic and illusory reconciliation obtained by external powers. The fruits of love overcome the elements of oppression such as social position and order, and the making fun of the self-centered ideology and hypocrisy clearly allude the real body of romantic imagination in the play. The festive patterns that C. L. Barber think of as the main elements in Twelfth Night and Shakespeare's other comedies also serve to embody the romantic imagination. Twelfth Night is somewhat different from other early romantic comedies in the sense that its romantic elements serve to reveal the actual energy and willingness to change the established society. The energy and power which transforms the established society into the comic and better society comes not from the accidental or supernatural beings but from the main characters. In the romantic and festive world of Twelfth Night, the ones who initiate and plan the main events are Viola and Maria, who are women and servants. They are not the characters who excrete their desire in fantasy like Malvolio. They are the characters who have the willingness and wisdom to change their lives. The energy to bring the reconciliation and harmony in the play comes from the low class, and it enables them to raise their social positions. In conclusion, Twelfth Night mainly shows that individual's energy and ability can change the established pattern of order.
