This study was carried out to investigate the effects of gibberellin (GA₃) application on the activities of cell wall hydrolases associated with aerenchma development in sunflower stem. Water and 0.1.1 and 10 ppm gibberellin were applied with jacket method to 30 days old stem for 3 days. The activities of celluloytic enzymes (CMC-saccharifrifying, hemicellulolytic enzyme (Xylanase), and pectinolytic enzyme (Polygalacturonase) were assayed. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Among all concentrations of GA₃applied, 10 ppm application showed larger intercellular spaces than in case of any other applications. The applications of 0.1 and 1 ppm GA₃however, were similar to the case of water jacket contol In the development of intercellular spaces. 2. 0.1 1 and 10 ppm GA₃application of intact sunflower stem increased CMC-saccharifying activity by 3 to 26 times that of the control. 3. Water jacket treatment more than increased xylanase activity slightly control. However, GA₃applications did not enhance xylanase activity. 4. 10 ppm GA₃treatment increased polygalacturonase (PG) activity by about 30% and water jacket treatment increased PG activity by about 20% compared with the control.
