We investigated the effect of chitosan oligosaccharide (COS-L, MW < 1,000 Da) on metastatic activities in MCF-7 estrogendependent human breast cancer cells. In a concentration range of 0.1 to 5 mg/mL, aromatase transcription was significantly down-regulated by COS-L. In gelatin zymographic analysis, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activity induced by phorbol- 12-myristate-13-acetate (TPA) was critically inhibited by COS-L in a dose-dependent manner. In contrast, tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) transcriptions was enhanced by COS-L but not changed TIMP-2. Therefore, the results suggest that COS-L should decrease the metastatic potential in MCF-7 estrogen-dependent human breast cancer cells through the decrease of aromatase transcription and MMP-9 activity and the increase of TMP-1 expression. In conclusion, present investigation provides critical information that COS-L may diminish the risk of mortality and recurrence caused by metastasis in estrogen-dependent breast cancer.

William Bell’s young adult novel, Stones, deals with the history of religious conflicts. Main protagonists, Garnet Havelock and Raphaella Skye were involved in a first-class haunting. To solve this haunting, they investigated the history of Oro area. In their search, they found that 150 years ago, 8 religious men had killed a black woman, Hannah, because of her diasporic religion. They regarded Hannah as a witch because she practiced voodoo rituals. Hannah’s case is closely connected with the violence which Garnet’s mother had by the religious extremists in East Timor, and Raphaella is bullied due to her religious backgrounds. To emphasize religious tolerance and coexistence, Bell focuses the protagonists’ growth at the end of this novel by showing Raphaella’s unflinching attitudes towards the ghostly men and the balanced viewpoint of Garnet’s school report on Inherit the Wind.

Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin plays an important part in the abolition of the slavery system under which many African Americans had to endure harsh conditions for their whole survivals. In this novel, Stowe mainly criticizes ruthless male characters because they continuously exploit black people. To emphasize women’s constructive roles, Stow contrasts brutal males with kind-hearted women and then deftly focuses the women’s subtle but effective alternative choices. When their views are not accepted, women conjure up several practical strategies to nullify the men’s vicious and inhumane decisions. Tom, the hero of this novel shows tenderness which can be regarded as woman’s quality. However, as the novel develops, Tom’s faith in Christianity and his love for Jesus Christ continued to expand. Mrs. Shelby, Cassy, Mrs. Bird, Rachel Halliday, and Eva represent diverse women’s voices which affect readers to participate in the abolition of the slavery system and to cooperate in the escape of black people. In this paper, I seek to connect these women’s quality with that of Cassandra who predicts the destruction of Troy. And in this vein, we can say Stowe’s role is similar to Cassandra’s in that Stowe has an insight of America without having slavery system and racial discrimination.

토니 모리슨의 『사랑』에 나타난 흑인 조상의 역할

Toni Morrison’s eighth novel, Love emphasizes the presence of African American ancestors who can play a crucial role in guiding their lost descendants. In this novel, the readers meet stray characters, Cosey, Heed, Christine, May and Junior who suffer from the loss of family ties and do not have any firm rootedness and connectedness. They do not have any guiding force as well as proper role models. Morrison lays great emphasis on the roles of black ancestors and points out the importance of reading African American novels through the prism of ancestors’ presence and absence. We can find positive black ancestors in Love: L., both a narrator and the cook of Cosey’s resort, and Romen’s grandparent, Vida and Sandler. As for Cosey, he is rather an ambivalent figure whom L. evaluates both as a good and evil man. Morrison depicts Romen’s gradual growth from innocence to experience and his grandparent’s careful and serious conversations related with his sexual relationship with sexually wild Junior. After remembering his grandfather’s hearty admonition, Romen becomes a maturer character who can give a successive healing effect to Junior who doesn’t have any secure sense of self. Morrison also introduces a more informative and protective narrator/ ancestor and character, L. In this novel, L. also plays an important ancestorial role by providing an order for survival in the Cosey family. L. even poisons Cosey to nullify his unreasonable will and makes a faked will which gives the reason for life for several characters. With the help of guiding roles of black ancestors, Morrison continuously suggests characters’ whole survivals.

생태축제를 위한 문화예술 프로그램 연구

Eco festival is social interaction for building eco society through entertainment activities and preservation of eco environment. Eco festival applying regional eco asset is incresead as regional festival is getting more, but the program of eco festival is getting more umiformly. This study aims to suggest direction and plan of culture-art for eco festival using characteristics of space. Eco-friendly culture events at eco part similar to Ansan Reef Wetland are analyzed as case studies. Since eco park is not park categorization of part by law, many local government entitled ‘eco park’ indiscreetly, thus culture events at eco parks have character as local festival. Major contents are planed based on characteristics of main visitors group and eco-environment, and theme of event by supervised organization. Fall festival at Ansan Reef Wetland has basic direction for event: space usage to minimize harm eco-environment, focus on hearing as theme of festival, collaboration with culture-art organization, and participation of local artists. To preserve core value ‘ respect to eco-environment and enjoyment of art and culture’ for eco-environment, basic direction should be kept as below. First program of event should focus on unique differentiation of eco-environment. Second artists and experts specialized for eco-environment should be taken part in. Third healthy of hybrid between eco and culture-art with collaboration of organizations. Fourth eco-friendly visitors activities guideline should be made and be noticed to visitors. 생태축제는 지역의 생태환경을 보존하면서, 유희적 활동을 통해 생태사회를 조성하기 위한 사회적 상호작용이다. 지역 축제가 증가하면서 지역의 생태자산을 활용한 생태축제가 증가하고 있으나, 생태축제의 프로그램은 획일화되는 경향을 보이고 있다. 본 연구는 생태공간의 특성을 활용하여 생태축제를 위한 문화예술 프로그램 기획과 방향을 제시하는 것을 목표로 한다. 수질 오염 개선을 목적으로 조성된 안산갈대습지에서의 문화예술축제를 연구 대상으로 삼았으며, 안산갈대습지와 유사한 생태공원을 대상으로 친환경 문화예술행사 사례를 분석하였다. 생태공원은 법정공원상 분류가 아닌 이유로 인해, 생태환경을 가지고 있는 곳의 지자체가 임의로 부여할 수 있어 생태공원의 문화예술행사는 지역 축제의 성격을 가진 곳이 많았다. 문화예술행사의 주요 콘텐츠는 방문자 층의 특성, 생태공간의 공간적 특성, 그리고 주관기관의 행사에 대한 주제 의식에 따라 결정되었다. 안산갈대습지의 가을 축제는 생태환경 훼손을 최소화한 공간 활용과 청각이라는 새로운 감각에 초점을 맞추고 문화예술기관의 협업과 지역 예술가를 참여시켰다. 생태성의 존중과 문화예술의 향유라는 핵심 가치를 지키기 위해 다음의 기본 방향이 견지되어야 할 것이다. 첫째 프로그램 구성에 있어 생태환경의 고유한 차별성을 존중하는 문화예술행사가 중심이 되어야 한다. 둘째 문화예술행사의 환경에 특화된 예술가와 전문가의 참여가 필요하다. 셋째 문화예술전문기관의 거버넌스 아래의 협업으로 생태와 문화예술간 이종혼합의 건강성을 유지해야 한다. 넷째 행사 운영에 있어 친환경적 세부 지침을 만들고 방문자들이 이를 준수하도록 하는 것이다.

Toni Morrison's Beloved was made into a film in 1999 by director Jonathan Demme. Oprah Winfrey, who acted as Sethe, made a great contribution to this film as both a producer and an actress. The film Beloved was mainly criticized for its main actress Thandie Newton who acted as Beloved. Demme made Beloved into a grotesque character similar to wild animals, who, unlike Morrison's novel, behaved strangely and couldn't represent Beloved's multiple identities. As for the rest of the characters, Winfrey, Kimberly Elise who acted as Denver, Beah Richards who acted as Baby Suggs, and Danny Glover who acted as Paul D. were cheered by the audience and movie reviewers. Especially Richards gave a magical performance in the "Clearing" where she led a ceremony that was full of crying, weeping, shouting, laughing, and dancing. Her sermon and religious ritual are regarded as one of the best scenes of this film. In spite of unfriendly criticisms related to length, character, Hollywoodian techniques and CGI, this film played a major role in developing African American films in that through this film Demme showed the slavery system's atrocity and its trauma without exaggeration which were too terrible to represent or relate on the screen. The film Beloved faithfully reproduced Cincinnati in the 1800s, the Underground Railroad, the plantation life style, hog raising, circus, and factories.
