구름의 생성원인은 上昇氣流에 의한 斷熱冷却인데 이에는 대류에 의한 上昇氣流와 前線에 동반되는 上昇氣流가 있고, 또 복사냉각과 한랭공기와 온난공기의 혼합 등이 있다. 이러한 구름의 생성원인에 따라 대기중에 떠있는 구름은 고도와 모양이 다양하다. 구름의 모양은 L. Howard가 1803년에 제창한 것에 기초를 두고 분류되어 있으며 高度와 形態에 따라 10類로 세분되어진다. 그리고 雲形은 다시 구름의 외관상 특징이나 대류의 강도와 같은 구조상의 차이에 따라 種別로 더욱더 세분된다. WMO에서 분류한 10類 雲形 중에서 공주지방에 출현률이 높은 운형을 알아보기 위해 1991년 부터 1995(1996)년 까지 5(6)년간 공주대학교에서 관측한 자료를 가지고 분석해 보았다. 그 결과 출현률이 높은 雲形으로는 St(35%), Ns(19.1%), Cu(14.2%), Sc(13.7%) 등의 순으로 나타났으며 강수시의 雲形으로는 Ns(38.0%), St(22.6%), Cu(12.2%)등의 순으로 나타났다. Cloud air usually formed by adiabatic cooling through ascending currents, radiation cooling or a mixture of warm air and cold one. Ascending currents are caused by convection currents, or they are accompanied with fronts. Thus clouds are formed through various kinds of causes and procedures. Form of clouds was that L.Howard proposed in 1803. And they are subdivided into 10 genera according to their height and shape. Most of the clouds are subdivided into the detailed kinds to the characteristics such as appearance or intensity of convection current. From clouds into 10 genera according to W.M.O.'s classification method, an investigation of percentage frequency of cloud occurrence according to its type has been carried out using the cloud data for five(six) year period from 1991 to 1995(1996). The results are shown that stratus(35%), nimbostratus(19.1%), cumulus(14.2%) and stratocumulus(13.7%) clouds are frequently in the relevant cloud types and nimbostratus(38%), stratus(22.6%) and cumulus(12.2%) in showerly precipitation.
