This paper presents an estimation method of flow distribution on the after body of vessels, which is based on artificial neural networks. The learning of neural network system for the flow pattern estimation is successful and the results of playback calculation show good agreement with the obtained data from model tests. The study offers the designers a practical method estimating simply and quickly flow pattern at a early design stage of ship hull form development.

In order to design an optimized hull form a systematic variation of the given hull form has been necessarily used. This paper suggests a novel hull form variation method improved from Botting's method which generates a new hull form by varying sectional area curve and design water line form from the base hull form. Finally the applicability and usefulness of new method are demonstrated.
