Interleukin (IL)-18 is a proinflammatory cytokine and a stimulator of cell-mediated immune responses. We have previously reported that acute stress stimulates the production of IL-18 mRNA in the glucocorticoid (GC)-producing cells of the adrenal cortex. In order to investigate the mechanisms governing the expression of IL-18 in the adrenal cortex, the effects of acute ACTH or chronic corticosterone treatment on the level of IL-18 mRNA and protein were examined by in situ hybridization and Northern and Western blot assays. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats received a subcutaneous injection of ACTH or subcutaneous implantation of slow-release corticosterone pellets followed by an injection of saline or ACTH. After 4 h, ACTH induced a 4-fold increase in IL-18 mRNA levels and elevated the content of pro-IL-18 peptide. Six days of chronic corticosterone treatment did not alter the basal levels of IL-18 mRNA and reduced those of pro-IL-18. Finally, ACTH treatment of animals under the corticosterone regimen induced a 2-fold increase in IL-18 mRNA and elevated the levels of the pro-IL-18 protein. The levels of the precursor, p45, and the active subunit p 10 peptides of the IL-18-processing enzyme, IL-1β-converting enzyme(ICE), showed no substantial differences in all the conditions tested. IL-1β was not detected under these experimental conditions. These data demonstrate that the production of IL-18 in the adrenal cortex is stimulated by ACTH treatment and is not inhibited by the direct action of corticosterone. In contrast to the anti-inflammatory action of GCs, IL-18 may have and immunostimulatory role during acute stress.
Astaxanthin을 포함한 Red Yeast를 급여한 무지개 송어 간과 근육의 Astaxanthin, α - Tocopherol 및 지질과산화물 함량

본 연구에서는 astaxanthin을 포함하는 red yeast(Phaffia rhodozyma)를 무지개 송어(Oncorhynchus mykiss)에게 제공했을 때 송어의 가식부인 근육에서 astaxanthin과 α-tocopherol 함량을 측정하여 투여 기간에 따른 astaxanthin의 축적 정도와 α-tocopherol 함량에 미치는 영향을 평가하였고, 근육과 간에서 TBARS를 측정하여 송어의 건강 상태에 대한 영향을 평가하였다. 송어 근육에서 astaxanthin 함량을 측정해 본 결과 대조성치군(CON/M)은 대조어치군(CON/J)과 근육에서 astaxanthin 함량이 유의적인 차이를 보이지 않았지만, 7일간 astaxanthin을 투여한 군은 대조어치군에 비해 astaxanthin 함량이 유의적으로 증가하였으나, 투여기간이 길어질수록 근육에서 의 astaxanthin의 함량은 더 이상 증가하지 않았고 거의 일정 수준을 유지하였다. 근육에서 α-tocopherol 함량은 군에 따른 유의적인 차이를 나타내지 않았다. 무지개 송어 근육에서의 TBARS 함량은 군에 따라 차이를 나타내지 않았지만, 간에서 TBARS 함량을 측정해 본 결과 대조성치군의 간에서의 TBARS 함량은 대조어치군에 비해 유의적으로 증가하였으나, 21일간 astaxanthin 첨가 식이군의 간에서의 TBARS 함량이 대조어치군과 유의적인 차이를 나타내지 않은 것으로 보아 astaxanthin을 포함한 red yeast를 식이로 제공할 때 송어 간에서의 지질과산화 생성이 억제되는 것을 알 수 있었다. The concentrations of astaxanthin and α-tocopherol were measured from the muscle of the rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss) that had been fed the red yeast(Phaffia rhodozyma) containing 0.2% astaxanthin for 7, 14 and 21 days. The effect of the astaxanthin supplementation for 21 days on peroxidation of liver and muscle lipids of the rainbow trouts was examined. The astaxanthin was found to bp. accumulated in the rainbow trout muscle when fed for 7 days with astaxanthin supplementation(80㎎/㎏ diet) in the form of the red yeast and the content did not increase further when fed longer up to 21 days. Seven days supplementation of astaxanthin raised the rainbow trout muscle content of the astaxanthin to 17㎍/g tissue from 11.8㎍/g tissue in mature control group. Although the hepatic TBARS level was found to be significantly decreased, the astaxanthin supplementation did not alter the α-tocopherol and TBARS contents of the rainbow trout muscle.

Rats treated with high dose of thyroid for 8 days produced a cardiac and renal hypertrophy. The cardiac hypertrophy was proportionately greater than renal hypertrophy. The specific activity of cardiac aldolase was elevated to 178 of that in the control animals after 9 days of daily hormone treatment, the biggest change seen between the 8th and 9th days of T₃ administration. The rates of synthesis and degradation as determined by the changes in specific radioactivity and total radioactivity, respectively, both fluctuated but in such a way that the net effect was small.
