We present the effect of post-implantation annealing conditions on the structural and optical quality of InAs quantum dots (QDs) grown by combination of focused ion beam (FIB) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) approach. A FIB of Ga+ ion was employed to pattern a homogeneously GaAs buffer layers and then, an in situ annealing step followed by InAs deposition was performed. Three different post-implantation annealing conditions were tested and under well-optimized conditions, a dislocation and defect-free InAs QDs growth on FIB patterned surface was successfully achieved. Furthermore, using photoluminescence (PL) study, we demonstrate that our best sample shows almost similar optical quality as MBE grown QDs on unimplanted GaAs surface. The patterning technique described here can presumably be applied to systems other than InAs/GaAs and highly interesting for site-controlled nucleation of QDs that finds its potential applications in nanooptoelectronic devices.

Present study attempts to overcome pH-dependent solubility, a limitation for oral delivery of poorly soluble BCS class-II drugs. A pH independent, patient compliant, dual working gastroretentive drug delivery system of model drug quetiapine fumarate (QF) was fabricated by unique combination approach of mucoadhesion and floating. Bilayer tablets comprising floating adhesive layer (FL) and matrix layer (ML) was systematically optimized by applying 32 full factorial experimental designs. Selected variables for FL: Polyox 303WSR (X1FL) and alginate beads (X2FL), and for ML: HPMC K100M (X1ML) and fumaric acid (X2ML) were studied against responses for FL: floating lag time (R1FL), total floating time (R2FL) and adhesion force (R3FL) and for ML: percentage drug released at 2 h—Q2h (R1ML), 8 h—Q8h (R2ML), and 18 h—Q18h (R3ML), respectively. Optimized batch (OP) showed floating lag time (6.5 h), total floating time (14 h), adhesion force (0.82 N) and Q18h ([90 %). Pharmacokinetic study of OP and immediate release market product demonstrated improved bioavailability (*12 % higher AUC0–?) of OP. In a nutshell, developed drug delivery system can be fabricated as a platform for QF and similar BCS class-II drugs with pH dependent solubility.

<P>Although cellular behaviors are dynamic, the networks that govern these behaviors have been mapped primarily as static snapshots. Using an approach called differential epistasis mapping, we have discovered widespread changes in genetic interaction among yeast kinases, phosphatases, and transcription factors as the cell responds to DNA damage. Differential interactions uncover many gene functions that go undetected in static conditions. They are very effective at identifying DNA repair pathways, highlighting new damage-dependent roles for the Slt2 kinase, Pph3 phosphatase, and histone variant Htz1. The data also reveal that protein complexes are generally stable in response to perturbation, but the functional relations between these complexes are substantially reorganized. Differential networks chart a new type of genetic landscape that is invaluable for mapping cellular responses to stimuli.</P>
Bandgap Engineering and Doping of ZnO and ZnOS Nanocrystals

For the first time doped ternary nanocrystals have been synthesized with high luminescent efficiency. The energy band-gap of ternary ZnO1-xSx alloy shows significant band-gap bowing. The band-gap of ZnOxS1-x alloys can be varied from 360 nm to 470 nm suggesting that these ternary nanophosphors are an excellent choice for white light generation from UV/blue LEDs.
Patient Positioning in Spine Surgery: What Spine Surgeons Should Know?

Spine surgery has advanced tremendously over the last decade. The number of spine surgeries performed each year has also been increasing constantly. Unfortunately, the reporting of position-related complications in spine surgery has also been steadily increasing. These complications not only result in significant morbidity for the patient but also raises the risk of litigation for the surgical and anesthetic teams. Fortunately, most position-related complications are avoidable with basic positioning knowledge. Hence, it is critical to be cautious and take all necessary precautions to avoid position-related complications. We discuss the various position-related complications associated with the prone position, which is the most commonly used position in spine surgery, in this narrative review. We also discuss the various methods for avoiding complications. Furthermore, we briefly discuss less commonly used positions in spine surgery, like the lateral and sitting positions.

Background and Purpose Perioperative stroke is a significant complication of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). This study aimed to quantify perioperative stroke as an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality and postoperative morbidity in patients receiving TAVI. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the National Inpatient Sample. Patients undergoing TAVI during 2012 and 2013 were identified using diagnostic codes of International Classification of Diseases, ninth revision. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using patient demographics and comorbidities to identify predictors of mortality and morbidity, defined by a length of stay of >14 days and/or discharge to a place other than home. Results Data were obtained from 7,556 patients undergoing TAVI during 2012 and 2013. The incidence rates of mortality and morbidity were 4.57 and 71.12%, respectively. Perioperative stroke was an independent risk factor for mortality [odds ratio (OR)=3.182, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.530–6.618, p=0.002], as were infection (OR=17.899, 95% CI=9.876–32.440, p< 0.001) and pericardial tamponade (OR=7.272, 95% CI=2.874–18.402, p<0.001). Stroke also predicted morbidity (OR=5.223, 95% CI=2.005–13.608, p=0.001), which was also associated with age, being female, being Asian, moderate and high Van Walraven scores (VWR), and infection. Conclusions In conclusion, perioperative stroke was found to be independently associated with in-hospital mortality and postoperative morbidity, as are age and high VWR. Our findings support the use of further preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative management strategies during TAVI.
Non-stationary quasi-periodic pulsations in solar and stellar flares

<P>Often the enhanced electromagnetic radiation generated in solar and stellar flares shows a pronounced (quasi)-oscillatory pattern—quasi-periodic pulsations (QPP), with characteristic periods ranging from a fraction of a second to several tens of minutes. We review recent advances in the empirical study of QPP in solar and stellar flares, addressing the intrinsic non-stationarity of the signal, i.e. the variation of its amplitude, period or phase with time. This non-stationarity could form a basis for a classification of QPP, necessary for revealing specific physical mechanisms responsible for their appearance. We could identify two possible classes of QPP, decaying harmonic oscillations, and trains of symmetric triangular pulsations. Apparent similarities between QPP and irregular geomagnetic pulsations Pi offer a promising avenue for the knowledge transfer in both analytical techniques and theory. Attention is also paid to the effect of the flare trend on the detection and analysis of QPP.</P>

A single-emissive fluorescent layer co-doped with red and blue phosphorescent dyes in a host [4, 4, bis-9 carbozyl-biphenyl](CBP) was used to fabricate white organic light-emitting devices (WOLEDs). The electroluminescent spectrum of thegenerated white light was observed to have two spectral peaks at ∼495 and ∼590 nm and a dip at ∼536 nm, with differentthicknesses of the emissive layer (EML). By optimizing the ratio of the dopants in the EML, the ratio of the maximumintensity of the two spectral peaks was brought to unity. The Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) coordinatesand correlated color temperature of the fabricated device were calculated, and the results are reported herein. No significantchange in the spectral shape of the emission spectra and the CIE coordinates were obtained when the applied voltages werevaried. It is easier to fabricate WOLEDs with a single EML as compared with their multilayer counterparts.
