Smoke Particle-Source Prediction Model Based on Multiple Optical Wavelengths Using Deep Learning

Recently, installing smoke detectors has become crucial owing to the risk of fatal human damage that may be caused by inhaling smoke during a fire. Smoke detectors have been reported as highly efficient in detecting smoke particles from fire; however, they may generate false alarms because of their limitation in distinguishing the fire smoke from the smoke generated by daily activities. Despite the frequent occurrence of these false alarms, research on predicting the types of sources through smoke particles remains insufficient. This study involved the development process of an intelligent smoke detector for false alarm reduction that aims to predict the occurrence and type of fire and the evaluation of its performance using the light-scattering characteristics for fire/non-fire sources. First, a previous experimental dataset of fire-related conditions was collected from three fire sources and three non-fire sources to train the model with the light-scattering characteristics of the smoke generated from each source. In addition, to reduce the computing power, data preprocessing was performed on the collected dataset using the median and RobustScaler. Finally, we evaluated the prediction performance of the three deep learning models using three networks: RNN, LSTM, and CNN-LSTM. As a result, we confirmed that the scattering intensity of smoke particles has unique characteristics for each source. When the data preprocessing and prediction models were applied, all three models achieved an accuracy of 0.90 or higher. However, some errors occurred that appeared at similar scattering intensities. The proposed method differs from existing methods in that it presents the possibility of predicting fire and non-fire sources and can be used as an alternative for improving false alarms in the future.

Objective. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, progressive, autoimmune disorder that impairs patients’ overall health-related quality of life (HRQOL). In this study, we evaluated the effect of adalimumab in Korean patients with active RA on HRQOL. Methods. Patients included in the study had moderate to severe active RA that did not respond to conventional drugs with a Disease Activity Score of 28 joints >3.2 and were biologics-naïve. All patients received adalimumab 40 mg subcutaneously every other week and were followed for 24 weeks. The primary endpoint was the change in baseline Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index (HAQ-DI) score at week 24. Secondary endpoints were changes in the EuroQol 5-dimension 3-Level (EQ-5D-3L) baseline score and Short Form 36-Item Health Survey (SF-36) domain scores at weeks 12 and 24 and change in baseline HAQ-DI score at week 12. Results. In total, 91 Korean patients were included. Ninety-three percent of patients were in high disease activity with a baseline mean DAS28 value of 6.1 within all patients. The mean change from baseline in HAQ-DI scores were -0.46 at week 12 and∼0.67 at week 24 (p<0.0001). Additionally, EQ-5D-3L score at weeks 12 and 24 had significantly improved (p<0.0001) compared to baseline. SF-36 at weeks 12 and 24 had significantly improved (p<0.0001, p=0.0001) compared to baseline. Conclusion. Treatment with adalimumab resulted in significant improvement in HAQ-DI, EQ-5D-3L, and SF-36 scores at 12 and 24 weeks in Korean RA patient. (J Rheum Dis 2021;28:68-75)
Is Whole Exome Sequencing Clinically Practical in the Management of Pediatric Crohn’s Disease?

Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to identify the profile of rare variants associated with Crohn’s disease (CD) using whole exome sequencing (WES) analysis of Korean children with CD and to evaluate whether genetic profiles could provide information during medical decision making. Methods: DNA samples from 18 control individuals and 22 patients with infantile, very-early and early onset CD of severe phenotype were used for WES. Genes were filtered using panels of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-associated genes and genes of primary immunodeficiency (PID) and monogenic IBD. Results: Eighty-one IBD-associated variants and 35 variants in PID genes were revealed by WES. The most frequently occurring variants were carried by nine (41%) and four (18.2%) CD probands and were ATG16L2 (rs11235604) and IL17REL (rs142430606), respectively. Twenty-four IBD-associated variants and 10 PID variants were predicted to be deleterious and were identified in the heterozygous state. However, their functions were unknown with the exception of a novel p.Q111X variant in XIAP (X chromosome)of a male proband. Conclusions: The presence of many rare variants of unknown significance limits the clinical applicability of WES for individual CD patients. However, WES in children may be beneficial for distinguishing CD secondary to PID. (Gut Liver 2015,9:767-775)

최근 급속하게 보급된 인터넷 환경은 전에는 불가능했던 우리 사회 비주류의 목소리를 공론화할 수 있는 영역으로 부상하고 있다. 이 논문은 정보화가 사회의 다원주의를 위해 긍정적인 역할을 할 수 있는지, 또 그러한 역할을 하기 위해서는 어떠한 조건이 충족되어야 하는지를 논구했다. 나는 다원주의의 핵심이 듀이와 로티가 말하는 개성이나 사적인 자율성의 문제와 관련이 있다고 보았으며, 정보화 사회는 그러한 삶의 다양성을 확대해가는 방향으로 발전해야 한다고 주장하였다. 그러한 주장을 하기 위해 먼저 정보화 사회가 다원주의를 확대해나갈 수 있다고 하는 래쉬와 어리의 입장, 그리고 그와는 반대로 비관적인 전망을 가지고 있는 보드리야르의 입장을 간단히 살펴보고, 다원적인 정보사회를 위한 내적, 외적 요건을 제시했다. 나는 정보격차를 해소하기 위한 경제민주주의를 실현하는 것이 그 외적인 조건이며, 사이버공간의 책임 있는 정치적 주체를 형성해 가는 것이 내적인 조건이라고 주장하였다.
The Cross-linguistic Contribution of Phonological Awareness in Word Reading

This study aimed to examine Korean EFL elementary students’ phonological awareness (PA) in Korean (L1) and English (L2) and to identify which sub-unit(s) of L1 and L2 PA is related to word decoding abilities in L2. More specifically, this study tested whether the psychological grain size theory postulated by Ziegler and Goswami (2005) was applicable to the cross-linguistic facilitations of L1 phonological awareness for L2 reading skills. Ninety nine Korean fifth graders participated in this study. The participants’ Korean and English phonological awareness and English word decoding ability were measured. Our findings indicated that while rime was the most salient phonological unit in English, syllable was the most salient phonological unit in Korean. In addition, the psycholinguistic grain size theory was fully supported within the participants’ L2, while it was only partially supported cross-linguistically in predicting L2 word decoding abilities.

한국에서 본격적인 근대화가 시작된 것은 그리 오래되지 않은 것으로 보입니다. 제 개인적인 생각으로는 불행하게도 박정희 전대통령의 군사정권은 근대화라는 측면에서 볼 때 중요한 계기를 제공했다고 생각합니다. 한편으로 박정희 대통령은 개발도상국의 발전 모델을 제공하기는 했지만 다른 한편으로는 많은 문화적인 유산들을 파괴하기도 했습니다. 그는 한국 사회 전체를 군사조직처럼 일사불란하게 체계화 하고자 했던 것 같습니다. 박정희식의 사회적 합리화 과정을 추진한 것 이지요.

차세대 소비주역인 Z 세대(Generation Z)는 정보탐색과정에서 기존 세대들과 다른 성향을 보인다. 디지털 원주민(Digital Native)이라고도 불리는 Z 세대는 정보탐색과정에서 다양한 플랫폼을 사용하며 다양한 기기를 활용해 언제 어디서나 정보를 접하는 세대이다. 특히 Z 세대는 이전세대에 비해 동영상 채널을 압도적으로 선호하며, 검색채널로 활용해 정보를 다양한 방식으로 습득한다. 이에 따라 뷰티 분야에서도 동영상 채널을 적극적으로 활용하여 마케팅하고 있으며, 동영상을 활용한 뷰티 서비스도 출시되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 특히 Z 세대 여성을 대상으로 유튜브를 통해 뷰티 정보를 탐색하는 과정을 문헌연구, 사용자 조사, 주제 분석 방법론(Thematic Analysis)을 통해 분석하여 넥스트 플랫폼에 대한 기회요인 리스트를 연구하였다.
