      • Phyto-nutrient Efficiency of Goat Manure Discharged from Farms in South Korea

        The study was conducted to evaluate the phytonutrient efficiency of goat manure discharged from farms in South Korea. Goat manure (GM) was collected from six different regions in South Korea, namely, Chupungnyeong (T1), Hoengseong (T2), Goesan (T3), Sancheong (T4), Jangsu (T5) and Namwon (T6). The major phytonutrients of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (N, P, K) were recorded variably in six different region manures. However, goesan and sancheong manure N % (2.55 and 2.31) and P % (2.06 and 2.68) values were recorded maximum than other four manures. The minimum of the values of N, P, K(%) was recorded as 0.67, 0.82 and 0.64 respectively in namwon farm goat manure. Phytotoxicity of collected goat manure was also assessed by means of the analysis of germination index (GI) using commercial crops, radish (Raphanus sativus) and cabbage (Brassica rapa). In our studies, GI (%) was recorded in the range of radish: 107.9-167.3 and cabbage: 29.9-68.8 from the six different farm goat manure(T1-T6). Each crop seed GI (%) was recorded significantly differently (p ≤ 0.05) in between the treatments manure extracts. Overall results also revealed that radish crops successfully shown excellent and non phytotoxic results in all manure extracts compared to the cabbage crop.

        Characterization of Streptomyces Species Causing Potato Scab in Korea: Distribution, Taxonomy, and Pathogenicity

        From 1996 to 1999, potato-growing areas in Korea were surveyed for identification and distribution of potato scab pathogens. Potato scab was widely distributed in the mass cultivation areas, especially in Jriu island, southern areas of Chonnam and Gyounggi provinces, and the alpine area of Gangwon province. Jeju island was the most affected area by this disease. A total of 55 Streptomyces strains were isolated from potato scab lesions, among which 40 strains were pathogenic on progeny tubers. Among the pathogenic strain, 21 strains were identified as previously described S. scabies, 7 Strains as S. turgidiscabies, and 5 Strains as S. acidiscabies, while 7 strains were observed as having distinct phenotypic properties. These strains were classified into six distinct clusters based on phenotypic characteristics and selected representative strains for each cluster. S. scabies (S33) had grey spores in a spiral chain. Mean-while, S. turgidiscabies (S27) had grey spores, S. acidiscabies (S71) had white spores, S. luridiscabiei (S63) had yellow-white spores, S. puniciscabiei (S77) had purple-red spores, and S. niveiscabiei (S78) had thin and compact white spores, all in a rectiflexuous chain. Pathogenicity was determined by the production of thaxtomin A and homologs of necl and ORFtnp genes. In TLC, representative strains S27, S71, S63, S77, and S78 produced a yellow band that co-migrated with the authentic thaxtomin A. However, thaxtomin A was not detected in chloroform extracts from oatmeal broth culture and Slice tuber tissue of S. luridiscabiei (S63) and S. puniciscabiei (S77) by HPLC analysis. In addition, no homologs of necl and ORFtnp genes in S. acidiscabies (S71), S. luridiscabiei (S63), S. puniciscabiei (S77), and S. niveiscabiei (S78) were detected by PCR and Southern hybridization analysis.

        울혈성 심부전 환자에서 혈중 Atrial natriuretic Peptide 농도의 변화

        To define the relation between severity of congestive heart failure, hemodynamic change and the release of atrial natriuretic peptide, we measured the plasma concentration of atrial natriuretic peptide by PIA in 15 normal controls and 23 patients with congestive heart failure. 1) There were significantly increased plasma levels of atrial natriuretic peptide in patients with congestive heart failure, the level appeared to depend on the severity of heart failure. 2) Plasma atrial natriuretic peptide levels were normalized in 6 patients, decreased in 4 patients and increased in 5 patients with refractory congestive heart failure after treatment of heart failure. 3) Plasma atrial natriuretic peptide levels in patients undergoing cardiac catheterization pressure (r=0.86, r= 0.88, p$lt;0.01).

      • Sustained Efficacy of Adjuvant Immunotherapy with Cytokine-Induced Killer Cells for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: An Extended Follow-Up Study

        Aims: A previous randomized controlled trial demonstrated that adjuvant immunotherapy with cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells prolonged both recurrence-free and overall survivals of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) receiving curative treatment. We investigated whether the efficacy of CIK cell immunotherapy might be sustained after cessation of repeated transfer of CIK cells. Methods: We performed a follow-up study of our multicenter, randomized trial reported in 2015. We included 226 patients: 114 patients in the immunotherapy group (injection of 6.4 ×10<sup>9</sup> CIK cells, 16 times during 60 weeks) and 112 patients in the control group (no treatment) after potentially curative treatments for HCC. Among them, 162 patients (89 of the immunotherapy group and 73 of controls) underwent extended follow-up until 60 months after randomization of the last patient. The primary endpoint was recurrence-free survival (RFS); secondary endpoints included overall survival and cancer- specific survival. Results: The median follow-up duration was 68.5 (interquartile range, 45.0-82.2) months. During follow-up, the immunotherapy group maintained a significantly lower risk of recurrence or death (hazard ratio [HR] with immunotherapy was 0.67; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.48-0.94; P=.009 by one-sided log-rank test). The 5-year RFS rate was 44.8% in the immunotherapy group and 33.1% in the control group (Figure 1). HRs were also lower in the immunotherapy than control group for all-cause death (0.33; 95% CI, 0.15-0.76; P=.006) and cancer-related death (0.33; 95% CI, 0.13-0.86; P=.02). Conclusions: In patients who underwent curative treatment for HCC, significant gain in recurrence-free and overall survival by adjuvant CIK cell immunotherapy was maintained for over 5 years.
