Isolation of L-theanine from Tea Solution by Cation Exchange Resin in Batch and Fixed Bed Column
Jian-Hui Ye,Yi-Wen Luo,Hui-Ling Liang,Jian-Liang Lu,Jing Jin,Yue-Rong Liang,Xin-Qiang Zheng,Xian-Yang Luo 한국생물공학회 2011 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.16 No.2
L-Theanine, a bioactive compound in tea, was isolated from tea solution using cation exchange resin no.732. The adsorption of L-theanine by cation exchange resin no.732 fit the Langmuir isotherm model and was a monolayer molecular interaction process. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption of L-theanine by resin no.732 was an exothermic and spontaneous physically driven process. The adsorption capacity was influenced by temperature, initial concentration, and pH. The L-theanine adsorption capacity under conditions at room temperature,pH 4.73, and initial L-theanine concentration 18 g/L was 241.731 ± 3.679 mg/g. The Thomas model was fit to describe the column adsorption data at different flow rates and initial concentrations. The L-theanine adsorbed by resin no.732 could be desorbed by 0.134 mol/L Na2HPO4aqueous solution with a recovery rate of 84.96%. These findings indicate that resin no.732 was a promising material for isolating L-theanine from tea solution.

Objective: The quality and radiation dose of different tube voltage sets for chest digital radiography (DR) were compared in a series of pediatric age groups. Materials and Methods: Forty-five hundred children aged 0-14 years (yr) were randomly divided into four groups according to the tube voltage protocols for chest DR: lower kilovoltage potential (kVp) (A), intermediate kVp (B), and higher kVp (C)groups, and the fixed high kVp group (controls). The results were analyzed among five different age groups (0-1 yr, 1-3 yr, 3-7 yr, 7-11 yr and 11-14 yr). The dose area product (DAP) and visual grading analysis score (VGAS) were determined and compared by using one-way analysis of variance. Results: The mean DAP of protocol C was significantly lower as compared with protocols A, B and controls (p < 0.05). DAP was higher in protocol A than the controls (p <0.001), but it was not statistically significantly different between B and the controls (p = 0.976). Mean VGAS was lower in the controls than all three protocols (p < 0.001 for all). Mean VGAS did not differ between protocols A and B (p = 0.334), but was lower in protocol C than A (p = 0.008) and B (p = 0.049). Conclusion: Protocol C (higher kVp) may help optimize the trade-off between radiation dose and image quality, and it may be acceptable for use in a pediatric age group from these results.

Artificial neural network has becoming a mainstream technology in the domain of complex materials data analysis. Based on a slag glass-ceramic system we brought forward a virtual sample technology to increase the training samples by fluctuating the content of main compositions in a proper small amplitude. Simulation results proved that a good virtual sample set can not only improve the network’s prediction ability considerably, but can also suppress the “overtraining” phenomenon. Therefore a virtual sample improved neural network model can learn the relationship from a small size experimental data set and give an accurate and stable prediction for the test samples. This is more helpful to the material data analysis and can facilitate the design and development for new materials. A full-length cDNA of cyclin B was isolated from ovary of the mud crab (Scylla paramamosain) in this study. This transcript encodes a polypeptide of 401 amino acids, which is highly homologous to cyclin B protein family. Reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) showed that cyclin B mRNA was expressed at highest levels in ovary of the mud crab. During the ovarian maturation process, realtime RT-PCR revealed that the abundance of cyclin B mRNA increased from the second stage (early-developing stage) to the fourth stage (nearly-ripe stage) and reached the peak level at the fifth stage (ripe stage). This result indicates the identified cyclin B gene might be related to the cell proliferation in ovary, both mitotically and meiotically. Immunohistochemistry showed that cyclin B protein was localized in the cytoplasm of prophase oocytes at the second stage while enriched in the nuclei of pro-metaphase oocytes at the fourth stage. It suggests the tested cyclin B protein might play different roles in ovary at the two stages.
Antitumor Activity of Chloroquine in Combination with Cisplatin in Human Gastric Cancer Xenografts
Zhang, Hui-Qing,Fang, Nian,Liu, Xiao-Mei,Xiong, Shu-Ping,Liao, Yu-Qian,Jin, Wen-Jian,Song, Rong-Feng,Wan, Yi-Ye Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.9
Purpose: To investigate the antitumor activity and mechanism of chloroquine (CQ) in combination with cisplatin (DDP) in nude mice xenografted with gastric cancer SGC7901 cells. Materials and Methods: 35 cases of gastric cancer patients with malignant ascites were enrolled and intraperitoneal cisplatin injection was performed. Ascites were collected before and 5 days after perfusion for assessment of autophagy levels in cancer cells. In addition, 24 tumor-bearing mice were randomly divided into control, DDP, CQ and CQ + DDP groups. Results: In 54.3% (19/35) of patients the treatment was therapeutically effective (OR), 5 days after peritoneal chemotherapy, 13 patients had the decreased ascites Beclin-1 mRNA levels. In 16 patients who had NR, only 2 cases had decreased Beclin-1 (P=0.001). Compared with the control group, the xenograft growth in nude mice in the DDP group was low, and the inhibition rate was 47.6%. In combination with chloroquine, the inhibition rate increased to 84.7% (P<0.01). The LC3-II/I ratio, and Beclin1 and MDR1/P-gp expression were decreased, while caspase 3 protein levels increased (P<0.05). Conclusions: Antitumor ability of cisplatin was associated with autophagy activity and chloroquine can enhance chemosensitivity to cisplatin in gastric cancer xenografts nude mice.
Application of Complex Probiotics in Swine Nutrition - A Review
Liu, Wen Chao,Ye, Mao,Liao, Jia Hao,Zhao, Zhi Hui,Kim, In Ho,An, Li Long De Gruyter Open 2018 Annals of animal science Vol.18 No.2

The use of probiotics as alternatives to antibiotics for farm animals is gaining more and more interest during recent years. Probiotics are living microorganisms that provide a wide variety of health benefits to the host when ingested in adequate amounts. The bacterial strains most frequently used as probiotic agents are Bacillus, lactic acid bacteria, Enterococcus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It has been suggested that multi-strain probiotics might be more effective than mono-strain probiotics due to the additive and synergistic effects, and many previous studies demonstrated that dietary complex probiotics supplementation had growth promoting effects on pigs. However, the effect of complex probiotics in practice is not always consistent, the effect of probiotic could be affected by strain composition, dosage, feed formula, and the age of animals. In this review, we will give an overview on the current use of complex probiotics for weaning, growing and finishing pigs and sows.
