Many changes have been taking place in agriculture. The changes continue to have impacts on agricultural economics teaching and research. In an environment of continuing change, many agricultural economics departments in the U.S. have changed their name and curriculum to attract new students who are not interested in production agriculture. This suggests that we, who are on agricultural economics faculty in Korea, need to seriously consider bold changes in curriculum and department name.
전라남도 시설채소 농가의 합리적 경영을 위한 작부체계 연구

This study analyzes the cropping system and the income of greenhouse farms in chonnam province, and seeks an efficient farm plan to increase their income. Since the middle of 1980's the demand for fresh vegetables and the size of greenhouse horticulture farms have been expanding rapidly along with the general standard of living. The area of the greenhouse horticulture which accounted for 31% of the total area of the vegetable planted in 1993, has increased to 54% in 1998. Vegetables such as strawberries, watermelons, tomatoes, and peppers are crops in which farmers can make a large income. But Most of the farmers have problems of inefficient management as well as capital shortage, so they are exposed to risks. Methods such as maximin, minimax, QP, MOTAD, Target MOTAD are used to manage risks and offer efficient farm plans. According to the specific situation they are faced, farmers can make a decision with results concluded by each method.

Although tubercrlosis is one of the recognized causes of adrenal insufficiency, little is known about adrenal function in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis. Patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis are at risk from sudden and unexpected death which can occur during the first few weeks of treatment. There are many reports that patients who received rifampicin as a part of their treatment appeared to show impairment in adrenocortical function when compared to a group who received anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy which did not include rifampicin. Adrenocortical function was studied in 15 patients(7 males, 8 females) with active pulmonary tuberculosis, before and 2-weeks after the anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy including rifampicin. At 08: 00 hour a base-line sample of venous blood was taken. One hour after the administration of 0.25mg of Synacthen, a further blood specimen was taken. The base-line and 1-hour specimens were analysed for plasma cortisol and electrolytes. All were initially found to have a normal cortisol response to rapid ACTH stimulation test. Following a 2-week course of anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy including rifampicin there was 1 case(6.6%) of a suboptimal response. Rifampicin, a powerful anti-tuberculosis drug, is a known inducer of the hepatic microsomal enzyme system and has been shown to cause an enhanced clearance of endogenous cortisol. Findings reported in this paper suggest that the adrenocortical function is compromised in some case(6.6%) of tuberculosis patients. It will therefore be necessary to undertake detailed investigations on the effect of treatment with daily and fully intermittent regimens containing rifampicin on the function of this endocrine gland(J Kor Soc Endocrinol 9: 239-243, 1994).
Characterization of the Effects of Silver Nanoparticles on Liver Cell Using HR-MAS NMR Spectroscopy

AgNPs (silver nanoparticles) has been widely used for the commercial products, which have antimicrobial agent, medical devices, food industry and cosmetics. Despite, AgNPs have been reported as toxic to the mammalian cell, lung, liver, brain and other organs and many researchers have investigated the toxicity of AgNPs. In this study, we investigated toxicity of the AgNPs to the liver cell using metabolomics based on HRMAS NMR (High Resolution Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) technics, which could apply to the intact tissues or cells, to avoid the sample destruction. Target profiling and multivariative statistical analysis were performed to analyze the 1D $^1H$ spectrum. The results show that the concentrations of many metabolites were affected by the AgNPs in the liver cell. The concentrations of glutathione (GSH), lactate, taurine, and glycine were decreased and most of amino acids, choline analogues, and pyruvate were increased by the AgNPs. Moreover, the levels of the metabolites were recovered upto similar level of metabolites in the normal cell by the pre-treatment of NAC, external antioxidant. The results suggest that the depletion of the GSH by the AgNPs might induce the conversion of lactate and taurine to the pyruvate.

Ginseng (Panax ginseng Meyer) has been shown to have anti-aging effects in animal and clinical studies. However, the molecular mechanisms by which ginseng exerts these effects remain unknown. Here, the anti-aging effect of Korean red ginseng (KRG) in rat testes was examined by system biology analysis. KRG water extract prepared in feed pellets was administered orally into 12 month old rats for 4 months, and gene expression in testes was determined by microarray analysis. Microarray analysis identified 33 genes that significantly changed. Compared to the 2 month old young rats, 13 genes (Rps9, Cyp11a1, RT1-A2, LOC365778, Sv2b, RGD1565959, RGD1304748, etc.) were up-regulated and 20 genes (RT1-Db1, Cldn5, Svs5, Degs1, Vdac3, Hbb, LOC684355, Svs5, Tmem97, Orai1, Insl3, LOC497959, etc.) were down-regulated by KRG in the older rats. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis of untreated aged rats versus aged rats treated with KRG showed that the affected most was Cyp11a1, responsible for C21-steroid hormone metabolism, and the top molecular and cellular functions are organ morphology and reproductive system development and function. When genes in young rat were compared with those in the aged rat, sperm capacitation related genes were down-regulated in the old rat. However, when genes in the old rat were compared with those in the old rat treated with KRG, KRG treatment up-regulated C21-steroid hormone metabolism. Taken together, Cyp11a1 expression is decreased in the aged rat, however, it is up-regulated by KRG suggesting that KRG seems enhance testes function via Cyp11a1.

An appropriate ratemaking procedure is essential for establishing an actuarially sound crop insurance system. All-risk crop insurance premium rates for 10 major crops (rice, barley, naked barley, red pepper, garlic, onion, radish, chinese cabbage, apple, and pear) are estimated and presented by producing regions. The rates are based on 8-year data of crop yields, which follow the logistic distribution in most cases. Methods of estimating loss costs and aggregating groups of similar risks are also discussed for the efficient operation of the crop insurance system.

Accurate characterizations of crop yield distributions are critical for crop insurance rate making as well as agricultural risk management. The yield distribution functions of 10 major crops (rice, barley, naked barley, red pepper, garlic, onion, radish, Chinese cabbage. apple, and pear) were estimated and presented by the producing region. Unlike typical approaches, which have been based on explicit assumptions about the yield probability density function, this article selects the form of distribution that fits best to the actual distribution of crop yields. For the sample period of 1991 to 1998, logistic distribution was found best to fit to the most cases.
