This study was aimed to investigate the effects of Azalea pollen on Blood sugar levels and enzyme activities induced by alloxan in rats. The blood sugar and enzyme activities were measured by spectrophotometry. The result were obtained as follows : 1. Azalea pollen restrained the increase of blood sugar by alloxan in rats. 2. Transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase level in blood were affected : alloxan-induced abnormal increase were restrained by Azalea pollen.

Background

Many studies have shown a link between inflammation and cancer development. However, there are few studies regarding the correlation between Behçet disease (BD) and cancer.

Objectives

To determine the overall cancer risk and risk for specific cancers in patients with BD.

Methods

Patients with BD (n = 14,137; mean age, 44.2 ± 12.5 years; male patients, 32.4%) without known previous cancer were selected from the Korean National Health Insurance Database between 2007 and 2014. An age- and sex-matched control population of individuals without BD was randomly sampled at a ratio of 10:1.
Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage C hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) consists of a heterogeneous group of patients with a wide range of survival times, requiring further prognostic stratification to facilitate treatment allocation. We evaluated the prognostic value of F-18-FDG uptake on PET/CT at the time of presentation in patients with BCLC stage C HCC. Methods: A total of 291 patients with BCLC stage C HCC who underwent F-18-FDG PET/ CT between 2009 and 2010 for staging were retrospectively enrolled from 7 university hospitals. The patients were further divided into 2 groups according to the extent of disease, as intrahepatic or extrahepatic. Tumor-to-liver SUV ratio (TLR) of the primary tumor was measured on F-18-FDG PET/CT. Prognostic values of TLR and other clinical variables were analyzed to predict overall survival (OS) in univariate and multivariate analyses. Differences in the OS stratified by TLR were examined by the Kaplan Meier method. Results: Higher TLR was associated with extrahepatic disease (P = 0.018). On multivariate analysis, Child Pugh classification and TLR were independent prognostic factors in the intrahepatic disease group (all P < 0.05), whereas TLR was the only independent prognostic factor in the extrahepatic disease group (P < 0.05). Patients with high TLR showed a significantly worse OS than those with low TLR (P < 0.05) in both groups. Conclusion: In patients with BCLC stage C HCC, F-18-FDG uptake in the primary tumor was significantly higher in patients with extrahepatic disease than in those with intrahepatic disease. In addition, F-18-FDG uptake on pretreatment PET/CT had an incremental prognostic value for OS in both intrahepatic and extrahepatic disease groups.

Background: This study assessed the prognostic value of metabolic parameters from preoperative 18F-FDG PET/CT in patients with curative surgical resection of stage III gastric cancer. Methods: Patients who underwent staging preoperative 18F-FDG PET/CT and con- fi rmed to have stage III gastric cancer after curative surgical resection were retrospectively enrolled. The maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) and peak SUV (SUVpeak) of the primary gastric cancer were measured from all patients. In addition, the metabolic tumor volume (MTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) were computed in all cases showing perceptible FDG uptake. The prognostic values of the PET parameters and clinicopathologic factors for recurrence free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) were evaluated. Results: 138 patients (male 89, female 49) were included, with age ranging from 26 to 83 years (mean±SD, 60.5±8.5). The TNM stage was IIIa in 41 patients, IIIb in 47 patients and IIIc in 50 patients. Mean follow up duration was 41±18 month (range 0~65, median 46 months). On univariate analysis, the pathologic T stage (pT), pathologic N stage (pN), TNM stage, vein invasion, SUVmax and SUVpeak were signifi cant prognostic factors for RFS (pmax, SUVpeak, and TLG were signifi cant factors for OS (pmax were prognostic for RFS, while TNM stage and age were the prognostic factors for OS. Conclusions: Higher SUVmax and SUVpeak of the primary tumor were associated with signifi cantly shorter RFS and OS. 18F-FDG PET/CT in patients with stage III gastric cancer provides prognostic information prior to surgery.

Purpose: MMP-2, 72 kDa-type IV collagenase, plays amajor role in the migration and growth of tumor cells, aprocess that requires the disintegration of basementmembrane. Activation of MMP-2 is correlated with theinvasiveness of various tumors. The aim of this study wasto determine the sequence-specific phosphorothioatedoligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) inhibiting the translationof MMP-2 mRNA and the subsequent invasiveness oftumor cells.Materials and Methods: Eight types of antisense ODNswere designed and each (8μg/ml) were transfected intoHT1080 cells. The effects of these antisense ODNs onMMP expression were examined by gelatin zymography,Western blot, Northern blot and matrigel assay. Results: Antisense-5 (+904∼+923), antisense-6 (+1274∼+1293) and antisense-7 (+1646∼+1665) reduced theMMP-2 activity of the culture supernatant in HT1080fibrosarcoma cells. Treatment with antisense-6 showedinhibition of MMP-2 mRNA and protein, and in vitroinvasion in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion: Antisense-6 might be one of the therapeuticcandidates for tumor invasion and metastasis.
