Mechanical Alloying of ODS Tungsten Heavy Alloys and Microstructure Development of Intermetallic Compounds

        Chun-Liang Chen,Chun-Lin Huang 대한금속·재료학회 2013 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.19 No.5

Oxide dispersion strengthened tungsten heavy alloys have been used in a wide variety of industrial and military applications due to their high density, strength and stiffness. These alloys have been produced by mechanical alloying, which can provide uniform distribution of nano-oxide particles and an extremely fine grain structure, resulting in the reduction of the sintering temperature. However, the high-energy ball-milling process could introduce iron contamination from the vial and milling media during the procedure. In this study, the W-Ni-Y2O3 alloy was investigated as a function of milling time. The results show that the increase of the Fe/Ni ratio has a significant influence on the microstructural development and material properties. The XRD data reveal considerable solid solubility extension in these powders. The tungsten carbide and iron rich intermetallic compounds were formed after long milling times, which can change the relative density and hardness of the alloy. It is essential that we understand the role of intermetallic phases in the ODS tungsten heavy alloy which determine the material properties and the control of microstructural development.

Role of Cu-Containing MEA Binder and Sintering Temperatures on Synthesis and Characteristics of Tungsten-Based Alloys

        ChunLiang Chen,Sutrisna 대한금속·재료학회 2023 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.29 No.6

Tungsten-based alloys doped with the 10 wt% FeCoNiCu medium entropy alloy (MEA) binder were fabricated by mechanicalalloying. The role of the Cu-containing MEA binder and sintering temperatures (1250–1450℃) on the synthesis, sinteringbehavior, and mechanical properties of the model tungsten alloys were investigated. The results demonstrate that thesolid-to-liquid phase transition during sintering was strongly influenced by the presence of Cu in the binder and sinteringtemperatures. A good combination of high compressive strength (2080 MPa), failure strain (42%), and hardness (419 HV)was achieved at the low sintering temperature (1250 ℃), which promoted a fined grain structure with semisolid state sintering. However, Fe-rich oxide layers were formed along the grain boundaries at the high sintering temperature (1450 ℃)and caused a poor bonding strength between the binder phase and W matrix, thereby resulting in significant degradation ofmechanical properties.

Effect of the Circle-Grid Electrodes on Concentrated GaAs Solar Cell Efficiency

        Chen-Chen Chung,Binh Tinh Tran,Ming-Hung Han,Kung-Liang Lin,Hung-Wei Yu,Yen-Teng Ho,Chun-Yen Chang,Edward Yi Chang 대한금속·재료학회 2014 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.10 No.5

In this study, we investigate the effect of the shading factor of the front grid pattern on concentrated solar cell efficiency, taking the trade-off between the series resistance of the electrodes and the amount of incident light into consideration. We examine the thermal effect with regard to five different circle-grid electrode patterns of the front contact. The front contacts with different grid patterns affect the characteristics of light-concentratedtype GaAs single-junction solar cells. The device parameters analyzed include the open-circuit voltage (Voc), short-circuit current (Isc), fill factor (FF) and conversion efficiency (η). The results of our study show that for a concentration ratio greater than 60x with AM1.5G, the device with a shading factor of 7.1% has the best cell efficiency of 27.05%, due to the smaller current crowding at the center spot. The results indicate that the conversion efficiency of solar cells can be improved by establishing a compromise between the shading effect and the series resistance effect.

Study of the Band-gap Structure of a 1D-photonic Crystal by Using Different Numerical Approaches

        Liang-Yao Chen,Jian-Bo Chen,Yue-Rui Chen,Yan Shen,Wei-Xi Zhou,Jiu-Chun Ren,Yu-Xiang Zheng 한국물리학회 2010 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.56 No.4

Comparative studies between the transfer matrices method (TMM) and plane wave method (PWM) approaches have been performed on 1D photonics crystal under different conditions to show the differences between these two kinds of calculations. TMM is suitable for the design of 1D photonic crystal device with high precision and is in good agreement with experimental results, but is not suitable for the 2D and 3D photonic structures which are limited by the complicated boundary conditions at micro interfaces. The result based on the PWM approach to deal approximately with the photonic structure in approximation has not yet been strictly verified by experiment, not even for 1D photonic crystal structures. More efforts will be required to explore its validation under all physical conditions to enhance its application.

Preparation of AC/TiO2 Composites from Activated Carbon Modified by HNO3 and Their Photocatalytic Activity

        Chen, Ming-Liang,Oh, Won-Chun Korean Carbon Society 2007 Carbon Letters Vol.8 No.2

In this work, activated carbon (AC) after $HNO_3$ modification was used as the support during the production of supported $TiO_2$ to increase the high deposition efficiency and the photocatalytic activity. The results of $N_2$ adsorption showed that the BET surface area of samples decreased with an increasing of the concentration of $HNO_3$ due to the penetration of $TiO_2$. From XRD data, a single crystal structure of anatase peak was observed in diffraction patterns for the AC coated with titanium complexes. From the SEM results, almost all particles were aggregated with each other at the carbon surface and AC was covered with $TiO_2$ particles in all of the samples. The EDX spectra show the presence of C, O, Ti and other elements. It was also observed a decreasing of amount of C content with increasing Ti and O content from the EDX. The results of FT-IR revealed that the modified AC contained more surface oxygen bearing groups than that of the original AC. The effect of surface acidity and basity calculated from Boehm titration method was also evaluated from correlations as a function of NaOH, $NaHCO_3$, and $Na_2CO_3$ uptake. The surface modification of AC by $HNO_3$ leads to an increase in the catalytic efficiency of AC/$TiO_2$ catalysts, and the catalytic efficiency increases with increasing of $HNO_3$ concentration.

Characterization of Co-AC/TiO2 Composites and Their Photonic Decomposition for Organic Dyes

        Chen, Ming-Liang,Son, Joo-Hee,Park, Chong-Yun,Shin, Yong-Chan,Oh, Hyun-Woo,Oh, Won-Chun Materials Research Society of Korea 2010 한국재료학회지 Vol.20 No.8

In this study, activated carbon (AC) as a carbon source was modified with different concentrations of cobalt chloride ($CoCl_2$) to prepare a Co-AC composite, and it was used for the preparation of Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites with titanium oxysulfate (TOS) as the titanium precursor. The physicochemical properties of the prepared Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites were characterized by $N_2$ adsorption at 77 K, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The photocatalytic treatments of organic dyes were examined under an irradiation of visible light with different irradiation times. $N_2$ adsorption data showed that the composites had decreased surface area compared with the pristine AC, which was $389\;m^2/g$. From the XRD results, the Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites contained a mixturephase structuresof anatase and rutile, but a cobalt oxide phase was not detected in the XRD pattern. The EDX results of the Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites confirmed the presence of various elements, namely, C, O, Ti, and Co. Subsequently, the decomposition of methylene orange (MO, $C_{14}H_{14}N_3NaO_3S$) and rhodamine B (Rh.B, $C_{28}H_{31}ClN_2O_3$) in an aqueous solution, respectively, showed the combined effects of an adsorption effect by AC and the photo degradation effect by $TiO_2$. Especially, the Co particles in the Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites could enhance the photo degradation behaviors of $TiO_2$ under visible light.

Promoting Effect of MgO in the Photodegradation of Methylene Blue Over MgO/MWCNT/TiO2 Photocatalyst

        Chen, Ming-Liang,Zhang, Feng-Jun,Oh, Won-Chun Materials Research Society of Korea 2010 한국재료학회지 Vol.20 No.7

For the present paper, we prepared MgO/MWCNT/$TiO_2$ photocatalyst by using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) pre-oxidized by m-chlorperbenzoic acid (MCPBA) with magnesium acetate tetrahydrate $(Mg(CH_2COO)_2\cdot4H_2O)$ and titanium n-butoxide $(Ti\{OC(CH_3)_3\}_4)$ as magnesium and titanium precursors. The prepared photocatalyst was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The decomposition of methylene blue (MB) solution was determined under irradiation of ultraviolet (UV) light. The XRD results show that the MgO/MWCNT/$TiO_2$ photocatalyst have cubic MgO structure and anatase $TiO_2$ structure. The porous structure and the $TiO_2$ agglomerate coated on the MgO/MWCNT composite can be observed in SEM images. The Mg, O, Ti and C elements can be also observed in MgO/MWCNT/$TiO_2$ photocatalyst from EDX results. The results of photodegradation of MB solution under UV light show that the concentration of MB solution decreased with an increase of UV irradiation time for all of the samples. Also, the MgO/MWCNT/$TiO_2$ photocatalyst has the best photocatalytic activity among these samples. It can be considered that the MgO/MWCNT/$TiO_2$ photocatalyst had a combined effect, the effect of MWCNT, which could absorb UV light to create photoinduced electrons $(e^-)$, and the electron trapping effect of MgO, which resulted in an increase of the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$.

Carbon/TiO2 Prepared from Anatase to Pitch and their Photocatalytic Performance

        Chen, Ming-Liang,Ko, Young-Shin,Oh, Won-Chun Korean Carbon Society 2007 Carbon Letters Vol.8 No.1

Carbon/$TiO_2$ composites were prepared by $CCl_4$ solvent mixing method with different mixing ratios. Since the carbon layers derived from pitch on the $TiO_2$ particles were porous, the Carbon/$TiO_2$ composite series showed a good adsorptivity and photo decomposition activity. The BET surface area for the carbon layer in the sample increases to increasing with pitch contents. The SEM results present to the characterization of porous texture on the Carbon/$TiO_2$ composite and pitch distributions on the surfaces for all the materials used. From XRD data, a weak and broad carbon peak of graphene with pristine anatase peaks were observed in the X-ray diffraction patterns for the Carbon/$TiO_2$. The EDX spectra show the presence of C, O and S with strong Ti peaks. Most of these samples are richer in carbon and major Ti metal than any other elements. Finally, the excellent photocatalytic activity of Carbon/$TiO_2$ with slope relationship between relative concentration (C/$C_0$) of MB and t could be attributed to the homogeneous coated pitch on the external surface by $CCl_4$ solvent method.

Characterization of AC/TiO2 Composite Prepared with Pitch Binder and Their Photocatalytic Activity

Chen, Ming-Liang,Bae, Jang-Soon,Oh, Won-Chun Korean Chemical Society 2006 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.27 No.9

In this study, we have prepared pitch binded AC (activated carbon)/$AC/TiO_2$ composites photocatalysts through carbon tetrachloride solvent method. The developed samples were characterized with surface properties, structural crystallinity between AC and $AC/TiO_2$, elemental identification and photocatalytic activity. The results of the textural surface properties demonstrate that there are slight increases in the BET surface area and adsorbed volume from adsorption isotherm of composite samples with increasing of the amount of AC. The SEM results present to the characterization of porous texture on the pitch/AC/$AC/TiO_2$ composites and homogenous compositions in the particle for all the materials used. From XRD data, a weak and broad carbon peak of graphene remained rutile peaks kept with anatase structure were observed in the X-ray diffraction patterns for the pitch/AC/$AC/TiO_2$ composites. The EDX spectra show the presence of C, O and S with strong Ti peaks. Most of these samples are richer in carbon and major Ti metal than any other elements. Finally, the excellent photocatalytic activity of the pitch/AC/$AC/TiO_2$ composites between relative concentration ($c/c_o$) of MB and UV irradiation time could be attributed to the both effects between photocatalysis of the supported $AC/TiO_2$ and adsorptivity of the two kinds of carbons.
