Country Image and Product Attitude: An Estimation of Switching Costs for the Korean Wave

Yan Shen,Ro-Sung Kwak 한국무역학회 2019 Journal of Korea trade Vol.23 No.8

Purpose - This study examines the mediating effect of switching costs (economic risk costs and setup costs) on the relationships of country image with product attitude and product attachment. Switching-cost effects for the Korean Wave, which are insufficiently addressed in the literature, were investigated using the country image of Korea as a proxy for the Korean Wave. Moreover, this study examined the economic effects of the Korean Wave and the negative effect of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) deployment on these economic effects. Design/methodology - A total of 302 Chinese consumers were surveyed using a questionnaire. Because this was an exploratory study and was not based on a classical model, the PLS-SEM method was employed to test the stability of the model and its hypotheses. Findings - Switching costs had mediating effects on the relationships of country image with product attitude and product attachment. The switching-cost effects for the Korean Wave were verified. However, neither the economic image nor cultural image of Korea had significant effects on the economic risk costs. Moreover, the economic image of Korea had no significant effect on the set-up costs. Originality/value - This study broadened the understanding of the relationships among country image, switching costs, product attitude, and product attachment and advanced the knowledge of relevant theories. The results contribute theoretically to the literature on switching-cost effects for the Korean Wave. The results confirmed the negative effect of THAAD deployment on the economic effects of the Korean Wave. In the rapidly developing international environment, these research results could serve as theoretical reference guidelines for suppliers when developing marketing strategies.

      • A Study on the Relationship between Production Country Image and Attitude toward the Product: An Estimaion of Switching Costs in Korean Wave

        Yan Shen,Ro-Sung Kwak 한국무역학회 2019 한국무역학회 국제학술대회 Vol.2019 No.08

In international markets, research on consumers’ attitude toward international pro ducts is crucial to the expansion of international trades, which is a common practice nowadays. In the relationship between consumers and products, country image is associated with its products by consumers. Product attitude and product attachment affect the formation of relationship between products and consumers. Switching costs can prevent consumers from switching to other suppliers. This study examined the mediation effect of switching costs (economic risk costs and set-up-costs) on the relations hips of country image with product attitude and with product attachment. The Korean wave switching costs effects were investigated using the country image of Korea as the proxy variable for Korean wave. The Korean wave switching costs effects have not garnered sufficient academic attention. This study examined the economic effects of Korean waves and the negative effect of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) on such economic effects. This study used partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze proposed hypotheses. The PLS-SEM results revealed that most hypotheses were supported. Switching costs had mediation effects on the relationships of country image with product attitude and with product attachment. The Korean wave switching costs effects were verified. However, the economic image and culture image of Korea both did not have significant effects on the economic risk costs. The economic image of Korea also had no significant effect on the set-up costs. This study expanded the understanding of the relationships among switching costs, country image, product attitude, and product attachment and the knowledge of relevant theories. The results provided theoretical contributions to research relevant to Korean wave switching costs effects. The results verified the negative effect of THAAD on Korean wave economic effects. In the rapidly developing international environment, the research results could serve as useful and theory-driven reference guidelines for suppliers in developing marketing strategies.

      • Asocial: Adaptive Task Re-Allocation in Distributed Computing Systems with Node Failures

        Yanli Shen,Taoshun Xiao,Weiwei Zheng 한국통신학회 2020 한국통신학회 APNOMS Vol.2020 No.09

Task allocation-the problem of efficiently allocating a set of M tasks to a set of N nodes-is a fundamental issue in distributed computing systems (DCSs). The problem is particularly challenging in the presence of fail-prone nodes. In this work, we design an adaptive task (re-)allocation mechanism, named Asocial. The Asocial allows us to optimize the utilization of system resources (including computing resources and network resources) while increasing service-level fault tolerance as well as failure resilience. In addition, we propose a cooperative game model based task (re-)allocation approach for cooperation among Physical Nodes (PNs). We consider both the performance states and reliability levels of candidate PNs when deploying tasks. Specifically, we exploit failure prediction techniques to evaluate PNs’ reliability levels. As a result, we can utilize the resources efficiently and thus improve the service reliability (i.e., the probability of serving all the tasks before their delivery time). We show by means of numerical evaluations that the proposed Asocial can significantly improve service reliability, system availability as well as resource utilization. In particular, by using failure prediction result (F-measure is around 0.8), the application completion rate (ACR), the task completion rate (TCR) and the computing resource utilization (CRU) reach 85.20%, 85.67% and 78.34%, respectively. Compared with 67.30%, 70.07% and 65.79% of the initial allocation scheme, the performance achieves a significant improvement (26.60%, 22.26% and 19.08%, respectively).

Vibration Energy Transfer Characteristics of Panels with Multiple Coupling Forms in Satellites

        Yan Shen,Yang Xu,Xiaowei Sheng,Song Wan,Xianbo Yin 한국항공우주학회 2023 International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sc Vol.24 No.5

Micro-vibrations on-board a satellite have degrading effects on the performance of certain payloads like observation cameras. There are numerous sources and extremely complicated transfer paths for micro-vibration in satellites. The vibration energy transfer characteristics of panels with multiple coupling forms in satellites were analyzed, which can guide the vibration isolation measures of satellites. First, the satellite was divided into honeycomb panel subsystems with multiple coupling forms. In the next phase, based on the energy finite element analysis (EFEA), the energy finite element equation of the honeycomb subsystem and the connection matrix at the coupling boundary was established to determine the energy distribution and energy flow characteristics of the multiform coupled honeycomb panels under different excitation frequencies. Finally, the finite difference approximation based on the response obtained from the measurement point array was employed to obtain the energy density. By comparing the results of the experiment and EFEA simulation under different frequency excitations, the average error of the energy density was less than 4 dB, which proved the accuracy of EFEA in the transfer characteristics analysis of the vibration energy of the satellite. The experiment method of vibration transfer based on the finite difference approximation can directly obtain the energy density of the structure.

MicroRNA-196b enhances the radiosensitivity of SNU-638 gastric cancer cells by targeting RAD23B

Shen, Yan Nan,Bae, In-Seon,Park, Gil Hong,Choi, Hwa Sik,Lee, Kee-Ho,Kim, Sang Hoon Elsevier 2018 BIOMEDICINE AND PHARMACOTHERAPY Vol.105 No.-

Abstract

Gastric cancer is characterized by resistance to ionizing radiation. The development of resistance to radiotherapy in gastric cancer patients is one of the obstacles to effective radiotherapy. MicroRNAs are small well-conserved non-coding RNA species that regulate post-transcriptional activation. Our study aimed to investigate the role of miR-196b in radiation-induced gastric cancer. In the present study, we found that miR-196b expression was significantly reduced following radiation. The ectopic miR-196b expression sensitized SNU-638 gastric cancer cells and increased γ-H2AX foci upon radiation treatment. Bioinformatics analysis suggested that the DNA repair protein RAD23B was a putative target gene of miR-196b. Overexpression of miR-196b suppressed RAD23B expression in SNU-638 cells. Reporter assays further showed that miR-196b inhibited RAD23B 3′-UTR luciferase activity. Knockdown of RAD23B by small interfering RNA transfection closely mimicked the outcomes of miR-196b transfection, leading to impaired DNA damage repair in gastric cancer cells. Our results show that miR-196b improved radiosensitivity of SNU-638 cells by targeting RAD23B. Our data indicate that miR-196b is a potential target to enhance the effect of radiation treatment on gastric cancer cells. These findings will provide evidence for a new therapeutic target in radiotherapy.

Antiproliferative activities of Garcinia bracteata extract and its active ingredient, isobractatin, against human tumor cell lines

        Shen, Tao,Li, Wei,Wang, Yan-Yan,Zhong, Qing-Qing,Wang, Shu-Qi,Wang, Xiao-Ning,Ren, Dong-Mei,Lou, Hong-Xiang 대한약학회 2014 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.37 No.3

In our cell based screening of antitumor ingredients from plants, the EtOH extract of Garcinia bracteata displayed antiproliferative effect against human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells, human breast cancer MCF-7 cells, and human prostate cancer PC3 cells. Phytochemical investigation of this active extract produced nine ingredients, and their structures were established by analysis of MS and NMR spectra. Antiproliferative evaluation of isolated ingredients on A549, MCF-7 and PC3 cells indicated that a xanthone named isobractatin (1) exhibited potent antiproliferative activity against the above three human cancer cell lines with $IC_{50}$ values ranging from 2.90 to $4.15{\mu}M$. Treatment of PC3 cells with 1 led to an enhancement of the cell apoptosis, and arrested cell cycle in the G0/G1 phase. The G0/G1 phase cycle-related proteins analysis showed that the expressions of cyclins D1 and E were reduced by 1, whereas the protein level of cyclin dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor P21 was induced. Additionally, 1 enhanced PC3 cell apoptosis by activations of Bax, caspases 3 and 9, and by inhibition of Bcl-2. Our combined data illustrated that isobractatin (1) was the antiproliferative ingredient of G. bracteata against three human cancer cell lines, which exerted its antiproliferatrive effect via cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis.

Copper and Bacterial Diversity in Soil Enhance Paeonol Accumulation in Cortex Moutan of Paeonia suffruticosa ‘Fengdan’

        Yanli Liu,Yan Xia,Pan Guo,Guiping Wang,Zhenguo Shen,Yingchun Xu,Yahua Chen 한국원예학회 2013 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.54 No.4

The effects of environmental factors on the paeonol accumulation in cortex moutan of herbal Paeonia suffruticosa cv. Fengdan were investigated. Cortex moutan of ‘Fengdan’ and the corresponding soil samples were collected from Tongling (Anhui Province, China). A pot experiment was also conducted to investigate the responses of plant growth and paeonol concentrations to copper (Cu) supply. The paeonol and Cu concentrations in cortex moutan samples, the basic soil properties and soil’s bacterial diversity were analyzed. The results showed that moderate levels of Cu in the soil enhanced the paeonol concentration in the cortex moutan. Moreover, the paeonol concentration was related significantly to soil bacterial diversity. The results of the pot experiment showed that increasing Cu supply from 63 to 263 mg·kg-1 did not produce any significant effect on the dry weight of ‘Fengdan’ cortex moutan, duramen, and total plant. Increasing Cu supply significantly increased the concentrations of paeonol in cortex moutan and duramen; but at 263 mg·kg-1 Cu there was a slight decline in their concentrations than those obtained at 156mg·kg-1 Cu. In all treatments, the concentrations of paeonol were much higher in the cortex moutan than those in the duramen. Due to its ecological benefits, ‘Fengdan’ can be planted in soil contaminated with moderate Cu.
