Probing Cultural Elements within Literature: A Lesson Plan to Expand Understanding

        ( Kim¸ Haeyoung ) 동국대학교 영어권문화연구소 2017 영어권문화연구 Vol.10 No.2

The integration of language, literature, and culture in the foreign language classroom is a challenge to educationists who struggle to devise a way to achieve the goal of raising individuals equipped with communicative skills founded on solid intercultural understanding. This paper explores teaching strategies that move away from the traditional teacher-centered foreign language literature instruction model and embrace more actively a learner-centered model in which groupwork and workshop-style presentation were introduced to the classroom. Using 9.11.01: The Skyscraper and the Airplane by Adam Goodheart as the main reading text, students engaged in close reading of the literary text, group projects in preparation for class presentation, and workshop-style class discussions. The process enabled students to reflect upon their reading strategies used in understanding the text, method of research for information, and interpersonal and presentation skills. Incorporating cultural factors related to literary texts with learner-centered group projects proved an effective way for students to become motivated learners and critical thinkers in addition to building knowledge on cultural matters and communicative skills.

Prognosis of patients with axillary lymph node metastases from occult breast cancer: analysis of multicenter data

        Haeyoung Kim,Won Park,Su Ssan Kim,Sung Ja Ahn,Yong Bae Kim,Tae Hyun Kim,Jin Hee Kim,Jin-Hwa Choi,Hae Jin Park,Jee Suk Chang,Doo Ho Choi 대한방사선종양학회 2021 Radiation Oncology Journal Vol.39 No.2

Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate prognosis of patients with level I/II axillary lymph node metastases from occult breast cancer (OBC). Materials and Methods: Data of 53 patients with OBC who received axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) positive/negative (+/-) breast-conserving surgery between 2001 and 2013 were retrospectively collected at seven hospitals in Korea. The median number of positive lymph nodes (+LNs) was 2. Seventeen patients (32.1%) had >3 +LNs. A total of 48 patients (90.6%) received radiotherapy. Extents of radiotherapy were as follows: whole-breast (WB; n = 11), regional lymph node (RLN; n = 2), and WB plus RLN (n = 35). Results: The median follow-up time was 85 months. Recurrence was found in four patients: two in the breast, one in RLN, and one in the breast and RLN. The 5-year and 7-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates were 96.1% and 93.5%, respectively. Molecular subtype and receipt of breast radiotherapy were significantly associated with DFS. Patients with estrogen receptor negative, progesterone receptor negative, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative (ER-/PR-/HER2-) subtype had significantly lower 7-year DFS than those with non-ER-/PR-/HER2- tumor (76.9% vs. 100.0%; p = 0.03). Whole breast irradiation (WBI) was significantly associated with a higher 7-year DFS rate (94.7% for WBI group vs. 83.3% for non-WBI group; p = 0.01). Other factors including patient’s age, number of +LNs, taxane chemotherapy, and RLN irradiation were not associated with DFS. Conclusion: Patients with OBC achieved favorable outcome after ALND and breast-targeting treatment. Molecular subtype and receipt of WBI was significant factors for DFS.

The Need for Level-based Criteria in the Assessment of Oral Proficiency

        Haeyoung Kim 한국영어어문교육학회 2009 영어어문교육 Vol.15 No.2

The purpose of this study is to identify the most important factor(s) that contribute(s) to the overall oral proficiency and to examine whether the factor(s) play(s) a different role depending on the proficiency level of learners. Learners were divided into novice group and advanced group and were asked to produce an oral recording of a story based on a comic strip. The recordings were transcribed and graded by three raters. According to the results, the raters attained high inter-rater reliability when assessing advanced learners. However, the reliability level became considerably lower in the assessment of novice learners. The best predictor of oral proficiency among novice learners was sociolinguistic competence and fluency, while grammatical competence and fluency were the strongest predictors for advanced learners. The results suggest the need for a separate assessment tool for different proficiency levels and the need for a different focus in the classroom depending on the learners’ proficiency level.

Differential and cooperative actions of Olig1 and Olig2 transcription factors on immature proliferating cells after contusive spinal cord injury

        Kim, Hyuk M.,Hwang, Dong H.,Choi, Jun Young,Park, Chang Hwan,Suh‐,Kim, Haeyoung,Kim, Seung U.,Kim, Byung G. Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2011 Glia Vol.59 No.7

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Spontaneous remyelination after spinal cord injury (SCI) is limited probably due to inadequate signaling to generate sufficient OLs from progenitor cells. The present study tested a hypothesis that introduction of <I>olig</I> genes, critical regulators of OL development, into immature proliferating cells could increase oligodendrogenesis after contusive SCI in adult rats. Recombinant retroviruses encoding Olig1 and Olig2 transcription factors, separately or in combination, with green fluorescent protein (GFP) were injected into the injured spinal cord. Unexpectedly, introduction of Olig2‐GFP retroviruses led to a marked hyperplasia of GFP+ cells at 1 week, and soft agar colony forming assay of isolated GFP+ cells confirmed Olig2‐induced tumorous transformation. In contrast, Olig1 did not alter the number of GFP+ cells. Simultaneous expression of Olig1 and Olig2 (Olig1/2) led to a marked increase in the number of GFP+ cells without tumor formation. The proportion of GFP+ cells with OL progenitor markers was increased by Olig1/2. Moreover, Olig1/2 robustly increased the proportion of mature OLs and expression of myelin related proteins, while Olig1 alone exhibited only modest effects. Olig1/2 upregulated Sox10, which drives terminal OL differentiation, implicating Sox 10 as a mediator of Olig1/2 effects on the maturation. Finally, injection of Olig1/2 retroviruses significantly improved a quality of hindpaws locomotion and increased the total number of OLs after SCI. Activation of both Olig1 and Olig2 may be beneficial by both increasing the progenitor cell proliferation and enhancing OL differentiation in the injured spinal cord. © 2011 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.</P>

Vocabulary Selection and Modification in English Textbook Production : A Case Study

Haeyoung Kim 한국외국어교육학회 2009 Foreign languages education Vol.16 No.1

The purpose of this study is to test the applicability and practicality of the Guidelines for the Use and Selection of Vocabulary for English Textbooks issued by KICE (Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation). The Guidelines, issued to authors and publishers of middle school and high school English textbooks, lay down the guidelines fir the selection and use of vocabulary. The study examined the types of vocabulary that had to be readjusted while trying to observe the guidelines and how the content had to be altered as a result. A tenth grade English textbook was analyzed for this purpose. Types of words that were replaced the most were borrowed words, compound words, and derivative words. Sentences either had to be altered structurally or content-wise, and the results were not always for the better. It is recommended that a more flexible guideline be in place so that authors may work with more freedom in the creation of textbooks and offer students with opportunities to acquire a variety of vocabulary in a more natural context.

Enter Poetry and Song into the Classroom: Integrating Literature into American Culture Courses

        Haeyoung Kim 한국영미문학교육학회 2013 영미문학교육 Vol.17 No.1

The purpose of this paper is to examine the need for cultural awareness in foreign language education and the role of literature in culture courses in the collegiate setting, specifically focusing on the utility of poetry and song. This paper narrowed the genre of investigation to poetry and song based on the argument that, despite its wide-spread unpopularity among students stemming from its abstractness and complexity, poems have a unique advantage over other forms of literature in delivering understanding of certain topics and issues of cultural value. To this end, the link between foreign language learning and culture has been explored, followed by a probe into the role of literature and, more specifically, poetry and song have in facilitating the understanding of a different culture, and how they can be introduced into English language classrooms. Poems and songs that have both literary and cultural value are presented as examples. This paper seeks to find a meeting point between the pragmatic needs of learners struggling to acquire English proficiency and the utility of poetry and literature to assist learners achieve their goal.

Therapeutic effect of hepatocyte growth factor-secreting mesenchymal stem cells in a rat model of liver fibrosis

        Kim, Myung-Deok,Kim, Sung-Soo,Cha, Hyun-Young,Jang, Seung-Hun,Chang, Da-Young,Kim, Wookhwan,Suh-Kim, Haeyoung,Lee, Jae-Ho Nature Publishing Group 2014 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.46 No.8

<P>Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been reported to be beneficial for the treatment of liver fibrosis. Here, we investigated the use of genetically engineered MSCs that overexpress hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) as a means to improve their therapeutic effect in liver fibrosis. Liver fibrosis was induced by intraperitoneal injection of dimethylnitrosamine. HGF-secreting MSCs (MSCs/HGF) were prepared by transducing MSCs with an adenovirus carrying HGF-encoding cDNA. MSCs or MSCs/HGF were injected directly into the spleen of fibrotic rats. Tissue fibrosis was assessed by histological analysis 12 days after stem cell injection. Although treatment with MSCs reduced fibrosis, treatment with MSCs/HGF produced a more significant reduction and was associated with elevated HGF levels in the portal vein. Collagen levels in the liver extract were decreased after MSC/HGF therapy, suggesting recovery from fibrosis. Furthermore, liver function was improved in animals receiving MSCs/HGF, indicating that MSC/HGF therapy resulted not only in reduction of liver fibrosis but also in improvement of hepatocyte function. Assessment of cell and biochemical parameters revealed that mRNA levels of the fibrogenic cytokines PDGF-bb and TGF-β1 were significantly decreased after MSC/HGF therapy. Subsequent to the decrease in collagen, expression of matrix metalloprotease-9 (MMP-9), MMP-13, MMP-14 and urokinase-type plasminogen activator was augmented following MSC/HGF, whereas tissue inhibitor of metalloprotease-1 (TIMP-1) expression was reduced. In conclusion, therapy with MSCs/HGF resulted in an improved therapeutic effect compared with MSCs alone, probably because of the anti-fibrotic activity of HGF. Thus, MSC/HGF represents a promising approach toward a cell therapy for liver fibrosis.</P>

Genomic and transcriptomic landscape of <i>Escherichia coli</i> BL21(DE3)

        Kim, Sinyeon,Jeong, Haeyoung,Kim, Eun-Youn,Kim, Jihyun F.,Lee, Sang Yup,Yoon, Sung Ho Oxford University Press 2017 Nucleic acids research Vol.45 No.9

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><I>Escherichia coli</I> BL21(DE3) has long served as a model organism for scientific research, as well as a workhorse for biotechnology. Here we present the most current genome annotation of <I>E. coli</I> BL21(DE3) based on the transcriptome structure of the strain that was determined for the first time. The genome was annotated using multiple automated pipelines and compared to the current genome annotation of the closely related strain, <I>E. coli</I> K-12. High-resolution tiling array data of <I>E. coli</I> BL21(DE3) from several different stages of cell growth in rich and minimal media were analyzed to characterize the transcriptome structure and to provide supporting evidence for open reading frames. This new integrated analysis of the genomic and transcriptomic structure of <I>E. coli</I> BL21(DE3) has led to the correction of translation initiation sites for 88 coding DNA sequences and provided updated information for most genes. Additionally, 37 putative genes and 66 putative non-coding RNAs were also identified. The panoramic landscape of the genome and transcriptome of <I>E. coli</I> BL21(DE3) revealed here will allow us to better understand the fundamental biology of the strain and also advance biotechnological applications in industry.</P>

Developing an Undergraduate Course in Interpretation: A Step-by-step Course for Beginning Learners

        Kim Haeyoung 한국통번역교육학회 2015 통번역교육연구 Vol.13 No.3

The present study attempts to propose a model for an interpretation course for undergraduate beginning learners of English programs that do not have a separate T&I track. Based on the premise that the undergraduate course objective cannot be identical to that of graduate programs, the study proposes elements to be included to meet the needs of the learners while upholding core features of interpretation education. The proposed model consists of three parts: preparatory phase, reception/production phase, and reflection phase. The first phase includes training in intralinguistic transfer and note-taking followed by a second phase designed to introduce students to consecutive interpretation through a gradual process. The study suggests that instructors need not limit the course objective to improving the language competence of learners, and can create an interpretation course which secures improving English proficiency, and authenticity at the undergraduate level.
