In order to apply the asset management into the bridge maintenance, the current level of service of each bridge should be first investigated. This study evaluated the level of service of bridges under the service in the field. Depending on the evaluating personnels' prior experience and information the level of service could be varied. The weight factor for each performance measure may need to be re-examined for better incorporation of the importance of structural behavior or condition of bridges. In addition, the current evaluating criteria is more like qualitative rather than quatitative, and hence may cause deviations between the evaluating personnels. Therefore, there is a strong research intends on the development of a specific quantitative criteria.

Production of transgenic cymbidium plants containing drought and salt stress tolerance genes
Hee-Sun Roh,Yi-Re Lee,Jong-Bo Kim 한국육종학회 2012 한국육종학회 심포지엄 Vol.2012 No.07
Transgenic cymbidium plants containing drought and salt stresses tolerance genes were produced by using a highly efficient Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system. The gene (AtSZF2) is salt and drought stresses tolerant gene and transferred into cymbidium plants. These transgenic cymbidium plants are investigated for gene introduction by PCR and analyzed by salt and drought stresses to check its gene expression. To investigate the gene expression of AtSZF2, leaves of transgenic cymbidium plants were soaked in salt solution (200 mM NaCl). Also, transgenic cymbidium plants were kept under no watering for 6 weeks to check the expression of drought stress tolerance. As a result, wild type plants showed more damage than transgenic plants under salt treatment. Further, transgenic cymbidium plants retained green color and healthy status, while wild type plants showed no tolerance after 6 weeks of no-watering treatment.

Background The study was to investigate whether alcohol consumption may affect quality of life and depressive mood in COPD patients. Methods Population-based cross-sectional study was done and the data were obtained from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted from 2014 and 2016. COPD was defined as a spirometry of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) < 0.7 in adults aged > 40 years. Quality of life (QOL) was evaluated with European Quality of Life Questionnaire-5D (EQ-5D) index and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) assessed the severity of depressive mood. Alcohol consumption was founded on history of alcohol ingestion for a previous months. Propensity score matching was used to match subjects to reduce the effects of factors associated with QOL and depressive mood. Results Total 984 subjects with COPD (M; F=695; 289, age=65.8 ± 9.7) were enrolled. In alcohol consumer (n=525), EQ-5D index were significantly higher than in non-alcohol consumer (n=459) (0.94 ± 0.11 vs. 0.91 ± 0.13, p=0.002) and PHQ-9 were significantly lower than in non-alcohol consumer (2.15 ± 3.57 vs. 2.78 ± 4.13, p=0.013). However, multiple regression analysis showed that alcohol consumption was not associated EQ-5D index and PHQ-9. Body mass index ≥ 25, triglyceride ≥ 150, high density lipid cholesterol ≤ 50 in men and ≤ 40 in women and blood pressure ≥ 130/85 were significantly common in alcohol consumer than non-alcohol consumer (p=0.035, 0.001, 0.001 and 0.002, respectively). Conclusion In the study, alcohol consumption may not affect quality of life and depressive mood in COPD patients. However, it may associated with risk of metabolic syndrome.

BackgroundThe objective of this study was to investigate whether alcohol consumption might affect the quality of life (QOL), depressive mood, and metabolic syndrome in patients with obstructive lung disease (OLD). MethodsData were obtained from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2014 and 2016. OLD was defined as spirometry of forced expiratory volume in 1 second/forced vital capacity <0.7 in those aged more than 40 years. QOL was evaluated using the European Quality of Life Questionnaire-5D (EQ-5D) index. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to assess the severity of depressive mood. Alcohol consumption was based on a history of alcohol ingestion during the previous month. ResultsA total of 984 participants with OLD (695 males, 289 females, age 65.8±9.7 years) were enrolled. The EQ-5D index was significantly higher in alcohol drinkers (n=525) than in non-alcohol drinkers (n=459) (0.94±0.11 vs. 0.91±0.13, p=0.002). PHQ-9 scores were considerably lower in alcohol drinkers than in non-alcohol drinkers (2.15±3.57 vs. 2.78±4.13, p=0.013). However, multiple logistic regression analysis showed that alcohol consumption was not associated with EQ-5D index or PHQ-9 score. Body mass index ≥25 kg/m2, triglyceride ≥150 mg/dL, high-density lipoprotein <40 mg/dL in men and <50 mg/dL in women, and blood pressure ≥130/85 mm Hg were significantly more common in alcohol drinkers than in non-alcohol drinkers (all p<0.05). ConclusionAlcohol consumption did not change the QOL or depressive mood of OLD patients. However, metabolic syndrome-related factors were more common in alcohol drinkers than in non-alcohol drinkers.

Reference ranges of standard experimental parameters are useful for comparisons in toxicology. The aim of this study was to collect data from 4-week repeated toxicity studies in Crl:CD (SD) rats, a strain widely used for toxicity and efficacy research, for establishing domestic reference values. Data on body weight, food consumption; urinalysis, hematological, and blood biochemical parameters; and organ weights were collected from 16 toxicity studies in 220 Crl:CD (SD) rats (110 males and 110 females). The studies had been performed at a single testing facility over the last 3 years and involved animals sourced from a single breeder. The findings were collated as means, standard deviations, percentages, and ranges. Urine volume, uterus weight, eosinophil, and basophil counts, and triglyceride, total bilirubin, and gammaglutamyl transpeptidase levels showed standard deviations of 30% or more. These historical control data would help to interpret the effects of test substances in routine toxicity and efficacy studies.

Recently, there has been an increase in the use of several nephrotoxicity biomarkers in preclinical experiments. In addition, it has been indicated that the result may have been influenced by secondary factors, such as sample storage condition or storage period. In this study, we have assessed the variation in urinary nephrotoxicity biomarkers as a result of urine storage conditions and storage period of the urine. Urine was sampled from specific pathogen-free Sprague-Dawley rats (19 weeks old), which were housed individually in hanged stainless steel wire mesh cages. Urine was stored at 20℃, at 4℃, or at ?70℃ after sampling. The levels of the biomarkers such as beta-2 microglobulin (B2M), cystatin-C (Cys-C), N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), micro albumin (MA), micro protein (MP) were measured at 6, 24, 48 and 144 hr after sampling. The B2M level was significantly decreased at 6, 24, 48, and 144 hr compared to 0 hr at ?70℃ (p < 0.05, p < 0.01, p < 0.05, and p < 0.05, respectively) and 24 and 144 hr at 20℃ (p < 0.01, p < 0.01, respectively). The Cys-C level was significantly decreased at 144 hr compared to 0 hr at 4℃ (p < 0.01), at 20℃ (p < 0.05) and at 70℃ (p < 0.01). MP and MA levels were not different for 144 hr in all storage conditions. Taken together, B2M and Cys-C levels were modulated by storage temperature and period. For the enhancement of test accuracy, it is suggested that strict protocols be established for samples to minimize the effects of the storage conditions on the detected levels of biomarkers.

Background: The expression of c-FLIP (cellular Fas-associated death domain-like interleukin-1 β-converting enzyme (FLICE)-inhibitory protein), which is a member of the family of inhibitors of apoptosis, has been associated with tumor development and progression. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of c-FLIP in gastric cancer and its correlation with tumor cell proliferation, apoptosis and the clinicopathologic features. Methods: Immunohistochemical staining with anti-c-FLIP antibody was performed in 98 tissue samples obtained from gastric cancer patients who underwent surgical treatment. The apoptotic cells were visualized by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate (dUTP) nick-end labeling (TUNEL), and the proliferative cells were visualized by staining with Ki-67 antibody. Results: The positive expression of c-FLIP in the gastric cancer tissues was demonstrated in 57.1% of the cases. The expression of c-FLIP was increased in the gastric cancer tissues compared with the matched normal gastric mucosa. The expression of c-FLIP was significantly associated with histologic differentiation (p=0.038). However, there was no association between the c-FLIP expression and the other clinicopathological parameters, including patient survival. The Ki-67 labeling index (KI) for the 98 tumors ranged from 7.6 to 85.0 with a mean KI of 50.4±15.7. The mean KI value of the c-FLIP positive tumors was 54.1±15.3 and this was significantly higher than that of the c-FLIP negative tumors (p=0.005). The apoptotic index (AI) for the 98 tumors ranged from 0.0 to 10.0 with a mean AI of 7.4±2.3. There was no significant difference between the c-FLIP expression and the AI (p=0.347). Conclusions: These results suggest that the c-FLIP expression may be associated with tumor cell proliferation of gastric cancer.
