Feng, Yan-Quan,Kwak, Jin Ho,Xu, Ming-Yao,Zhou, Jin-Xin Elsevier 2008 European journal of combinatorics : Journal europ& Vol.29 No.3
<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A graph is half-arc-transitive if its automorphism group acts transitively on vertices and edges, but not on arcs. It is known that for a prime p there is no tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs of order p or p2. Xu [M.Y. Xu, Half-transitive graphs of prime-cube order, J. Algebraic Combin. 1 (1992) 275–282] classified the tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs of order p3. As a continuation, we classify in this paper the tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs of order p4. It shows that there are exactly p−1 nonisomorphic connected tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs of order p4 for each odd prime p.</P>

Two metal-organic frameworks based on the connectivity co-effect between rigid benzenedicarboxylic acid and bridging ligand have been synthesized $[Zn_2(3-NO_2-bdc)_2(4,4'-bpy)_2H_2O]_n$ (1), $[Co(3-NO_2-bdc)(4,4'-bpy)H_2O]_n$ (2) (where $3-NO_2-bdcH_2$ = 3-nitro-1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, 4,4'-bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine). The two novel complexes were characterized by IR spectrum, elemental analysis, fluorescent properties, thermogravimetric analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). X-ray structure analysis reveals that 1 and 2 are two-dimensional (2D) network structures. Complex 1 and complex 2 belong to triclinic crystal with P-1 space group. The luminescence measurements reveal that two complexes exhibit good fluorescent emissions in the solid state at room temperature. Also, thermal decomposition process and powder X-ray diffraction of complexes were investigated.

Objective: The aim of our study was to evaluate the differences between sclerotherapy with and without ethanol concentration monitoring for the treatment of simple renal cysts. Materials and Methods: Sixty-seven patients with 70 simple renal cysts were randomly assigned to two groups in a 12-month prospective controlled trial. One group (group A) was treated with computed tomography (CT)-guided sclerotherapy without ethanol concentration monitoring (33 patients with 35 cysts), whereas the other group (group B) had ethanol concentration monitoring (34 patients with 35 cysts) during the procedure. Treatment outcomes between the two groups were compared 12 months later with follow-up ultrasound examination. Results: After the 12-month follow-up period, the overall success rate was 74.3% in group A and 94.3% in group B (p = 0.022). The mean cyst size before and after treatment was 8.6 ± 2.0 cm and 2.3 ± 2.9 cm, respectively, in group A, and 8.4 ± 1.7 cm and 0.8 ± 1.9 cm, respectively, in group B. The final size of the cysts in group B was significantly smaller than that in group A (p = 0.015). The likelihood of treatment with ethanol concentration monitoring being successful was approximately 16 times higher than without ethanol concentration monitoring (p = 0.026; odds ratio = 15.7; 95% confidence interval: 1.38-179.49). There were no major complications in either group. Conclusion: Monitoring of Hounsfield units (HU) of ethanol by CT is an effective method in the treatment of simple renal cysts with ethanol sclerotherapy. The ethanol sclerotherapy procedure can be terminated at the point of clear fluid aspiration because the HU (-190) of CT scan corresponds to it.

<P>A graph is s-regular if its automorphism group acts regularly on the set of its s-arcs. Malnič et al. (Discrete Math 274 (2004), 187–198) classified the connected cubic edge-transitive, but not vertex-transitive graphs of order 2p3 for each prime p. In this article, we determine the s-regularity of all connected cubic symmetric graphs of order 2p3 for each prime p and each s. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory</P>
Cat fertilization by mouse sperm injection
Jin, Yong-Xun,Cui, Xiang-Shun,Yu, Xian-Feng,Lee, Sung-Hyun,Wang, Qing-Ling,Gao, Wei-Wei,Xu, Yong-Nan,Sun, Shao-Chen,Kong, IL-Keun,Kim, Nam-Hyung Cambridge University Press 2012 Zygote Vol.20 No.4
<B>Summary</B><P>Interspecies intracytoplasmic sperm injection has been carried out to understand species-specific differences in oocyte environments and sperm components during fertilization. While sperm aster organization during cat fertilization requires a paternally derived centriole, mouse and hamster fertilization occur within the maternal centrosomal components. To address the questions of where sperm aster assembly occurs and whether complete fertilization is achieved in cat oocytes by interspecies sperm, we studied the fertilization processes of cat oocytes following the injection of cat, mouse, or hamster sperm. Male and female pronuclear formations were not different in the cat oocytes at 6 h following cat, mouse or hamster sperm injection. Microtubule asters were seen in all oocytes following intracytoplasmic injection of cat, mouse or hamster sperm. Immunocytochemical staining with a histone H3-m2K9 antibody revealed that mouse sperm chromatin is incorporated normally with cat egg chromatin, and that the cat eggs fertilized with mouse sperm enter metaphase and become normal 2-cell stage embryos. These results suggest that sperm aster formation is maternally dependent, and that fertilization processes and cleavage occur in a non-species specific manner in cat oocytes.</P>

Alum sludge produced by drinking water plants needs to be conditioned and dewatered before final disposal. In this study, a novel ferrous iron/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation process was employed to enhance alum sludge dewaterability. The effect of oxidative sulfate radicals generated by Fe2+ activated HSO5 on alum sludge was studied. The results showed that the optimal conditioning conditions for addition of Fe2+ and PMS were 0.5 g/g and 0.1 g/g TSS, respectively. Meanwhile, the capillary suction time (CST) and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) of alum sludge was reduced by 66% and 88%. Also found was that the absolute value of the zeta potential increased and the particle size decreased in alum sludge after Fe2+-PMS conditioning, which indicated that oxidative sulfate radicals destroyed the floc structure of alum sludge and smaller particles were generated. At the same time, the water contained in sludge flocs was released and enhanced sludge dewaterability, while leaching of aluminum ions also characterized decomposition of alum sludge.

Enhancement of sludge dewaterability is key for sludge management and disposal of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). In this study, the Fe2+-peroxymonosulfate (PMS) conditioning approach was first used to oxidize the primary sludge from the primary sedimentation tank of a full scale WWTP. The combination of Fe2+ (0.05-0.5 g/g TSS) and PMS (0.05-0.5 g/g TSS) could significantly improve the dewaterability of primary sludge. The optimal addition amount of Fe2+ and PMS was 0.1 g/g TSS and 0.25 g/g TSS, respectively, under which the capillary suction time (CST) and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) of the sludge was reduced by 79% and 95%. The physicochemical properties (particle size, zeta potential, EPS composition) of the primary sludge before and after oxidative conditioning were measured. Results showed that sulfate radicals generated from Fe2+-PMS system effectively reduced organic matter in different EPS fractions, further destroying sludge floc cells. Then the bound water in the sludge flocs was released, thereby improving the sludge dewaterability. The microscopic morphology also indicated that the sludge flocs have a blocky structure with tight texture before conditioning. After conditioning, the sludge flocs become smaller, and many irregular pores are formed on the surface, which facilitates the passage of internal moisture. Economic analysis showed that Fe2++PMS conditioning is more economical than the traditional Fenton method.

B. thuringiensis strain LY-99 belonging to subsp. Alesti (H3a3c), was isolated from Chinese tobacco warehouse and showed significantly high toxicity to Plutella xylostella. For the identification of the cry1-type genes from B. thuringiensis LY-99, an extended multiplex PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was established by using two pairs of universal primers based on the conserved regions of the cry1-type genes to amplify around 2.4 kb cry1-type gene fragments. Then the DNA fragment was cloned into pGEM-T Easy vector and digested with EcoRI and EcoRV enzymes. Through this method, a known cry1-type gene was successfully identified from the reference strain, B. thuringiensis subsp. alesti. In addition, the RFLP patterns revealed that B. thuringiensis LY-99 included a novel cry1A-type gene in addition to cry1Aa, cry1Ac, cry1Be and cry1Ea genes. The novel cry1A-type gene was designated cry1Ah2 (Genbank accession No DQ269474). An inverse PCR method was used to amplify the flank regions of cry1Ah2 gene. Finally, 3143 bp HindIII fragment from B. thuringiensis LY-99 plasmid DNA including 5` region and partial ORF was amplified, and sequence analysis revealed that cry1Ah2 gene from LY-99 showed 89.31% of maximum sequence similarity with cry1Ac1 crystal protein gene. In addition, the deduced amino acid sequence of Cry1Ah2 protein shared 87.80% of maximum identity with that of Cry1Ac2. This protein therefore belongs to a new class of B. thuringiensis crystal proteins.
