        This cross-sectional investigation evaluated the trend of psychological changes by Qi-training using a self-report inventory of emotional distress, Symptom Check List-90-Revision (SCL-90-R). Forty-one normal healthy subjects (mean age: 21.0±5.4) and one hundred-twenty-three Qi-trainees (divided into three groups, primary, middle and high level) participated in this study. Primary level group has received 1-4 months Qi-training (mean age: 22.0±7.8, n = 41); middle level group has 5-12 months Qi-training (mean age: 20.0±7.8, n = 41); and high level group has more than 1 year Qi-training (mean age: 22.7± 6.7, n = 41). Our results show that all of psychologucal symptom scales of Qi-trainees over lyear were significantly lower scores compared to controls. In addition, high level group had lower global indexes scores than control. A significant negative correlation was found between the Qi-training period and all SCL-90-R subscales except phobic anxiety. These results suggest that Qi-training is effective in protection as well as reduction of psychological symptomatology.

      • Coagulant와 Hydro-cyclone을 결합한 상향류식 여과시스템

        Coagulation Hydro-cyclone can be added to the upward flow filtration system utilizing Fiber-Ball filter media to analyze and evaluate the treatment characteristics in order to Non-point pollution, which is a pollution problem, more efficiently. Hydro-cyclone was added to the existing Filter column to create an Up-Flow Filtration system. The treatment efficiency according to the operating conditions such as turbidity, suspended solids, pH, inflow flow rate, and head loss was analyzed. Comparison of inflow water and runoff water suspended solids and turbidity analysis results showed a minimum treatment efficiency of 93.21% and a maximum treatment efficiency of 99% or more. It was analyzed that the SS and turbidity analysis results showed a treatment efficiency of 80% or more before and after backwashing twice. When Coagulation Hydro-cyclone was added compared to the existing filtration system, it was analyzed that particles that had not been treated as an adsorption fiber company filter medium between particles could be treated.

      • A Case of Idiopathic Aortitis with Left Renal Vein Thrombosis

        A 38-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of abrupt left flank pain. He had no fever and physical examination revealed tenderness of the left costovertebral angle. Laboratory data revealed white blood cell 16,060/μL, C-reactive protein 0.93 mg/ dL. Urinalysis showed more than 1/2 red cells per high-power field with severe proteinuria (4+). Enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed the thickened abdominal aorta wall with partial thrombus. The thickened aorta wall compressed the left renal vein and it caused left renal vein thrombosis. Abdominal CT findings suggested aortitis of the abdominal aorta with complication of left renal vein. We could exclude other types of aortitis including autoimmune aortitis, Takayasu’s arteritis, giant cell arteritis, and infectious causes based on a serologic test and the history of the patient. Therefore, the patient was diagnosed with idiopathic aortitis and treated with glucocorticoid. After treatment, his symptoms disappeared and a follow-up CT showed decreased mural thickening of the abdominal aorta. Isolated idiopathic aortitis presented with renal vein thrombosis is extremely rare and has not been reported in Korea yet. We present a rare case report on idiopathic aortitis of the abdominal aorta with complication of left renal vein thrombosis.

      • Long-term outcomes after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair - Mean 8.7 years follow-up -

        Introduction and Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical and structural outcomes after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ASRCR). Material and Method Two hundred and one ASRCR patients followed-up more than 5 years postoperatively were retrospectively reviewed. To evaluate the structural integrity, MRI or ultrasonography was performed at the annular follow-up. Visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, active range of motion (aROM), and the ASES score were evaluated for the functional outcome. Results Mean follow-up period was 103.8 ± 26.5 (61-170) months. Overall healing failure rate was 21.4%, and the retraction size of supraspinatus tear was the most important risk factor of healing failure (odds ratio, OR 1.1, p < 0.001). Osteoarthritis of glenohumeral joint (OA) was progressed in 69 cases (34.3%), and it was strongly associated with healing failure (OR 4.3, p < 0.001). Both healed and healing failure group presented improved functional outcomes postoperatively, however, healing failure group presented worse pain (p = 0.001) and ASES score (p = 0.034) at the final follow-up compared to those of postoperative 1 year. To evaluate the deterioration point, minimal clinically important difference of pain (1.4) and ASES (11.1) was applied. Pain and ASES score have been worsened in healing failure group since postoperative 5.5 ± 0.5 and 7.5 ± 0.5 years, respectively. Meanwhile, pain and ASES score were maintained more than 10 years in healed group (pain 10.6 ± 0.4, ASES 12.8 ± 0.2 years), and it was statistically longer than healing failure group (all p < 0.001). Conclusions The healing of the repaired rotator cuff was important for a successful long-term outcome. OA progression was strongly associated with healing failure, and it also affected the poor long-term clinical outcome.

        Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry Analysis of Riboflavin in Beagle Dog Plasma for Pharmacokinetic Studies

        Riboflavin is a water-soluble vitamin, which serves as a precursor to flavin mononucleotide and flavin adenine dinucleotide. This study aimed to develop a simple and rapid liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis for the quantification of riboflavin in the Beagle dog plasma. This method utilized simple protein precipitation with acetonitrile and <sup>13</sup>C<sub>4</sub>,<sup>15</sup>N<sub>2</sub>-riboflavin was used as an internal standard (IS). For chromatographic separation, a hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) column was used with gradient elution. The mobile phase consisted of 0.1% (v/v) aqueous formic acid with 10 mM ammonium formate and acetonitrile with 0.1% (v/v) formic acid. Since riboflavin is an endogenous compound, 4% bovine serum albumin in phosphate buffered saline was used as a surrogate matrix to prepare the calibration curve. The quantification limit for riboflavin in the Beagle dog plasma was 5 ng/mL. The method was fully validated for its specificity, sensitivity, accuracy and precision, recovery, and stability according to the US FDA guidance. The developed LC-MS/MS method may be useful for the in vivo pharmacokinetic studies of riboflavin.

      • <i>Microbulbifer gwangyangensis</i> sp. nov. and <i>Microbulbifer pacificus</i> sp. nov., isolated from marine environments

        <P>Two novel Gram-stain-negative, chemoheterotrophic and strictly aerobic bacteria, strains GY2<SUP>T</SUP> and SPO729<SUP>T</SUP>, were isolated from a tidal flat at Gwangyang Bay in Korea and a marine sponge sample from the Pacific Ocean, respectively. The two strains were halotolerant, catalase- and oxidase-positive, and non-motile rods. Optimum temperature and pH for growth of both strains were observed to be 35 °C and pH 7.0–7.5, but optimum salinity for strain SPO729<SUP>T</SUP> [2–3 % (w/v)] was slightly higher than that for strain GY2<SUP>T</SUP> (1–2 %). The major cellular fatty acids of both strains were C<SUB>16 : 0</SUB>, iso-C<SUB>15 : 0</SUB>, iso-C<SUB>17 : 0</SUB>, iso-C<SUB>17 : 1</SUB>ω9<I>c</I>, C<SUB>18 : 1</SUB>ω7<I>c</I>, iso-C<SUB>11 : 0</SUB> and iso-C<SUB>11 : 0</SUB> 3-OH. The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains GY2<SUP>T</SUP> and SPO729<SUP>T</SUP> were 55.1 and 57.9 mol%, respectively, and ubiquinone 8 (Q-8) was detected as the sole respiratory quinone from the two strains. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains GY2<SUP>T</SUP> and SPO729<SUP>T</SUP> formed tight phyletic lineages with members of the genus <I>Microbulbifer</I>. Strain GY2<SUP>T</SUP> was closely related to <I>Microbulbifer okinawensis</I> ABABA23<SUP>T</SUP> (98.2 %), strain SPO729<SUP>T</SUP> (98.0 %) and <I>Microbulbifer donghaiensis</I> CN85<SUP>T</SUP> (97.0 %); strain SPO729<SUP>T</SUP> was closely related to <I>M. okinawensis</I> ABABA23<SUP>T</SUP> (98.3 %) and <I>M. donghaiensis</I> CN85<SUP>T</SUP> (98.2 %). The DNA–DNA relatedness values of strain GY2<SUP>T</SUP> with <I>M. okinawensis</I> ABABA23<SUP>T</SUP>, strain SPO729<SUP>T</SUP> and <I>M. donghaiensis</I> CN85<SUP>T</SUP> were 40.0±2.1 %, 13.1±3.9 % and 16.2±5.8 %, respectively, whereas those of strain SPO729<SUP>T</SUP> with <I>M. okinawensis</I> ABABA23<SUP>T</SUP> and <I>M. donghaiensis</I> CN85<SUP>T</SUP> were 48.0±4.0 % and 34.6±9.3 %, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic and molecular features, it is concluded that the two strains GY2<SUP>T</SUP> and SPO729<SUP>T</SUP> represent two novel species of the genus <I>Microbulbifer</I>, for which the names <I>Microbulbifer gwangyangensis</I> sp. nov. and <I>Microbulbifer pacificus</I> are proposed; the type strains are GY2<SUP>T</SUP> ( = KACC 16189<SUP>T</SUP> = JCM 17800<SUP>T</SUP>) and SPO729<SUP>T</SUP> ( = KCCM 42667<SUP>T</SUP> = JCM 14507<SUP>T</SUP>), respectively.</P>

        Application of an IPM-based Spray Program to Protected Cultivation of Strawberry in Korea

        An IPM-based spray program (ISP), based on ecological and agronomic information, is necessary for reducing pesticide sprays and producing strawberries safely. In this study, the applicability of ISP to safe production of strawberries was compared with a conventional spray program (Con-SP) during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons in plastic houses in Nonsan, Korea. The ISP program consisted of fungicide, insecticide, and miticide treatments as well as release of natural enemies before and after harvest. The ISP treatment schedule was as follows: dipping transplants in azoxystrobin before transplanting (mid-September); spraying with abamectin and thiacloprid when black mulch was applied (early October); spraying with pyraclostrobin + acetamiprid and tetraconazole + abamectin before blooming in early and mid-November, respectively; transplanting banker plants colonized by Aphidius colemani in mid-February (2005-2006 season) or November (2006-2007 season); and releasing Phytoseiulus persimilis in mid-March. Number of pesticide sprays per season for ISP and Con-SP was five and nine, respectively. Anthracnose crown rot, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, did not occur in ISP in either season, but incidence was ≤ 3.3% in Con-SP during the 2005-2006 season. Powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca aphanis var. aphanis) did not occur during harvest in ISP, but occurred during early and late harvest stages in Con-SP in both years. Incidence of Botrytis fruit rot did not differ between ISP and Con-SP. Two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) did not appear until March in ISP; subsequently, spider mite density remained at ≤-0.5 mite per leaf until the last harvest period in both years. The number of spider mites in ISP and Con-SP during the harvest did not differ. Populations of cotton aphids (Aphis gossypii) were also higher in ISP than Con-SP but decreased from March to April, accompanied by production of aphid mummies by A. colemani. The results showed that ISP was more effective than Con-SP, and required fewer pesticide sprays.

      • Prenatal development toxicity study of zinc oxide nanoparticles in rats

        <P>This study investigated the potential adverse effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles ([ZnO<SUP>SM20(+)</SUP> NPs] zinc oxide nanoparticles, positively charged, 20 nm) on pregnant dams and embryo–fetal development after maternal exposure over the period of gestational days 5–19 with Sprague-Dawley rats. ZnO<SUP>SM20(+)</SUP> NPs were administered to pregnant rats by gavage at 0, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg/day. All dams were subjected to a cesarean section on gestational day 20, and all of the fetuses were examined for external, visceral, and skeletal alterations. Toxicity in the dams manifested as significantly decreased body weight after administration of 400 mg/kg/day NPs; reduced food consumption after administration of 200 and 400 mg/kg/day NPs; and decreased liver weight and increased adrenal glands weight after administration of 400 mg/kg/day NPs. However, no treatment-related difference in: number of corpora lutea; number of implantation sites; implantation rate (%); resorption; dead fetuses; litter size; fetal deaths and placental weights; and sex ratio were observed between the groups. On the other hand, significant decreases between treatment groups and controls were seen for fetal weights after administration of 400 mg/kg/day NPs. Morphological examinations of the fetuses demonstrated significant differences in incidences of abnormalities in the group administered 400mg/kg/day. Meanwhile, no significant difference was found in the Zn content of fetal tissue between the control and high-dose groups. These results showed that oral doses for the study with 15-days repeated of ZnO<SUP>SM20(+)</SUP> NPs were maternotoxic in the 200 mg/kg/day group, and embryotoxic in the 400 mg/kg/day group.</P>
