<P>A novel pyrrolizidine alkaloids, madhumidine A (1), and two known alkaloids, lindelofidine benzoic acid ester (2) and minalobine B (3) were isolated from the leaves of Madhuca pasquieri (Dubard) H. J. LAM. The chemical structures of these alkaloids were established mainly by NMR techniques and mass spectrometry. Their anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated against lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide production in macrophage RAW264.7 cell. In addition, the cytotoxic activity of all isolated compounds was tested against a panel of cancer cell lines.</P>
Control of morphology and Orientation of Electrochemically Grown ZnO Nanorods

We report the direct electrochemical deposition of ZnO nanorods on an indium tin oxide substrate. Themorphology and orientation of the grown ZnO nanorods were investigated as functions of the currentdensity. It is likely that the concentrations of OH- and Zn2+ ions, which could be controlled by varying thecurrent density, determine the shape and alignment of the ZnO nanorods. The nanorods were tilted, hexagonal,and prismatic at a low current density (0.1 mA/cm2) and vertically aligned and obelisk-shaped at highcurrent densities (greater than 0.6 mA/cm2). By using the low and high current densities sequentially in atwo-step growth process, vertically aligned, hexagonal, and prismatic ZnO nanorods could be grownsuccessfully. The underlying mechanism responsible for the growth of the ZnO nanorods is also discussed.
Disruption of Ninjurin1 Leads to Repetitive and Anxiety-Like Behaviors in Mice

<P>Over the last few decades, molecular neurobiology has uncovered many genes whose deficiency in mice results in behavioral traits associated with human neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and schizophrenia. However, the etiology of these common diseases remains enigmatic with the potential involvement of a battery of genes. Here, we report abnormal behavioral phenotypes of mice deficient in a cell adhesion molecule Ninjurin 1 (Ninj1), which are relevant to repetitive and anxiety behaviors of neuropsychiatric disorders. Ninj1 knockout (KO) mice exhibit compulsive grooming-induced hair loss and self-made lesions as well as increased anxiety-like behaviors. Histological analysis reveals that Ninj1 is predominantly expressed in cortico-thalamic circuits, and neuron-specific Ninj1 conditional KO mice manifest aberrant phenotypes similar to the global Ninj1 KO mice. Notably, the brains of Ninj1 KO mice display altered synaptic transmission in thalamic neurons as well as a reduced number of functional synapses. Moreover, the disruption of Ninj1 leads to glutamatergic abnormalities, including increased ionotropic glutamate receptors but reduced glutamate levels. Furthermore, chronic treatment with fluoxetine, a drug reportedly ameliorates compulsive behaviors in mice, prevents progression of hair loss and alleviates the compulsive grooming and anxiety-like behavior of Ninj1 KO mice. Collectively, our results suggest that Ninj1 could be involved in neuropsychiatric disorders associated with impairments of repetitive and anxiety behaviors.</P>
Diluents and Cryoprotectants for Cryopreservation of Filefish Thamnaconus modestus Sperm

The present study aimed to find the best diluent and cryoprotectant for sperm cryopreservation of filefish Thamnaconus modestus. Two kinds of artificial seminal plasma(ASP1, ASP2), 0.3 M glucose and marine fish Ringer's solution(MFRS) were employed as diluent. Dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) and methanol as cryoprotectant were selected for sperm cryopreservation. Sperm was diluted at the ratio of 1:3 with diluents containing cryoprotectants and adjusted for final concentration at 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. Mixed milt was frozen at liquid nitrogen vapor after equilibration for 5 min. The highest motility($40.5{\pm}2.8%$) and swimming speed($81.5{\pm}4.1{\mu}m/s$) of frozen/thawed sperm were observed in ASP1 diluent containing 10% DMSO and in ASP2 containing 15% DMSO, respectively. Results showed that cryopreservation with ASP as diluent and DMSO as cryoprotectant could be adopted for long term storage of filefish sperm.

A novel all aromatic 2,7-naphthalene-based liquid crystalline epoxy (LCE) was synthesized successfully in this study. The thermal transition of the synthesized LCE was characterized by wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The characterization showed that the LCE had a low melting temperature of 65 oC and was in a nematic state in temperature range of 65-75 oC. The curing reaction between LCE and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) was investigated, using 2-methylimidazole (2MI) as the reaction catalyst. Upon the addition of 1 phr of 2MI, the curing temperature was dramatically decreased from 227 to 128 oC, which is 99 oC lower than that of a reaction without the use of a catalyst system.

To continue exploration of structure activity relationship of novel 1-(indoline-5-sulfonyl)-4-phenylimidazolidinones (1) reported as anticancer agent with broad spectrum, three 1-(arylsulfonyl)- 4-vinylimidazolidinones (2) were synthesized from methyl serinate (3) in 8 steps. Reaction of intermediate 2-phenoxycarbonylaminobut-3-enyl p-toluenesulfonate (10) with arylsulfonamide in the presence of potassium carbonate produced corresponding 2 and N-(4-vinyloxazolidin- 2-yl)arylsulfonamide 11 in approximately equal ratio. This reaction is believed to undergo through urea intermediate 16 as shown in scheme 3. 1-Arylsufonyl-4-vinylimidazolidinones 2 show much reduced activity against human colon carcinoma (Colo205), human chronic myelogenous leukemia (K562), and human ovarian adenocarcinoma (SK-OV-3) and compatible activity against human lung carcinoma (A549) compared to 1. <P>The objectives of this present study were to assess the effects of varying dilutions, pH, temperature and cations on spermatozoa motile parameters (SMPs) in fish Larimichthys polyactis. Optimal SMPs were observed when emen was diluted in artificial seawater (ASW) at a ratio of 1 to 100, with temperature of 10 degreesC and pH 8.0. The spermatozoa of L. polyactis were immotile in distilled water and motile in solution containing different cations. Maximum SMPs were obtained in each solution containing 0.4 mol NaCI, 0.4 mol KCI, 0.2 mol CaCI2 and 0.2 mol MgCl2. This study provides baseline knowledge of L. polyactis spermatozoa sensitivity of pH, temperature and cationic effects.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>In this article, thermally conductive and relatively low dielectric constant polymer matrix composites of an aluminum nitride filler (AlN) and a novel liquid crystalline copoly(ester amide) (LCP) were prepared via a solution blending method in the presence of a phosphate containing dispersant. The viscosities, thermal conductivities, and dielectric properties of the prepared AlN/LCP composites were investigated as a function of AlN loading. Our experimental results demonstrated that the AIN/LCP composite with AlN concentration of 50 wt% had 2.5 times higher thermal conductivity than pure LCP (2.020 and 0.817 W/mK for composite with 50 wt% of AlN and pure LCP, respectively), but its dielectric constant remained at low level, i.e., < 9.0 at frequency of 900 Hz. In addition, viscosities of AlN/LCP pastes in the <I>N</I>‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone solvent remained at acceptable levels with the high AlN loading of 50 wt%.
