        Carbon-coated SnO<sub>2</sub>@C with hierarchically porous structures and graphite layers inside for a high-performance lithium-ion battery

        <P>A high-performance anode material was prepared from a hierarchically structured activated carbon which contains <I>in situ</I> graphene and nano-graphite. The activated carbon was immersed in a solution of SnCl<SUB>2</SUB>·2H<SUB>2</SUB>O and subjected to ultrasound. As a result, nanoparticles of SnO<SUB>2</SUB> were uniformly deposited on the surface of the activated carbon. The composite material was then coated with a thin layer of carbon by soaking it in a sucrose solution, followed by carbonization of the adsorbed sucrose at 500 °C. The resulting composite showed an outstanding high-rate cycling performance that can deliver an initial discharge capacity of 1417 mAh g<SUP>−1</SUP> and maintain a discharge capacity of more than 400 mAh g<SUP>−1</SUP> after 100 cycles at a high current density of 1000 mA g<SUP>−1</SUP>. This outstanding electrochemical performance is likely to be related to a unique combination of the excellent electrical conductivity of the activated carbon with graphite layers formed inside, its hierarchical pore structure which enhances lithium-ion transportation, and the carbon coating which alleviates the effects of volume changes, shortens the distance for Li<SUP>+</SUP> diffusion, facilitates the transmission of electrons, and keeps the structure stable.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Carbon-coated SnO<SUB>2</SUB>@C nanocomposite with hierarchically porous structures and graphite layers inside was prepared by ultrasound and hydrothermal treatment, which showed an outstanding high-rate cycling performance for lithium-ion battery. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c1jm14290a'> </P>

      • An alternative atmospheric-pressure cold plasma method for synthesizing Pd/P25 catalysts with the assistance of ethanol

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Atmospheric-pressure (AP) cold plasma has experienced a growing interest recently due to its simplicity and high efficiency for preparing supported metal catalysts by using the active hydrogen species generated from explosive H<SUB>2</SUB> gas. In this communication, we report an alternative AP cold plasma method for synthesizing supported Pd catalysts using Ar gas and ethanol instead of explosive H<SUB>2</SUB> gas and toxic reducing agents. The TOF value of the prepared Pd/P25 catalyst at 120 °C is 3.1 times of that prepared by cold plasma using H<SUB>2</SUB> gas due to the protection of the formed carbon species.       • Dispersion of carbon nanotubes in aluminum improves radiation resistance

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We can mass-produce metal/carbon nanotube (CNT) composites that show improved radiation tolerance. The 0.5wt% Al+CNT composite showed improved tensile strength without reduction of tensile ductility before radiation, and reduced void/pore generation and radiation embrittlement at high displacements per atom (DPA). Under helium ion irradiation up to 72DPA, the 1D carbon nanostructures survive, while sp<SUP>2</SUP> bonded graphene transforms to sp<SUP>3</SUP> tetrahedral amorphous carbon. Self-ion (Al) irradiation converts CNTs to a metastable form of Al<SUB>4</SUB>C<SUB>3</SUB>, but still as slender 1D nanorods with prolific internal interfaces that catalyze recombination of radiation defects, reducing radiation hardening and porosity generation.         Flow and surface pressure field measurements on a circular cylinder with impingement of turbulent round jet

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>When the circular jet impinges onto a cylinder, the three-dimensional (3D) curved wall jet was attached to the wall due to the Coanda effect and the flow separation was delayed with increasing Reynolds number and impinging angle. These interesting phenomena can be studied in depth through a variety of parameters and measurement methods. Time-resolved stereo PIV measurement was conducted to investigate the 3D flow characteristics with instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields. Pressure sensitive paint (PSP) method was used to examine the pressure distribution on the cylinder surface when a circular jet impinges on it. The effects of the impingement angle, Reynolds number, and diameter ratio between the jet nozzle and the cylinder (d/D) were examined at a fixed nozzle to wall distance ratio of two (H/d = 2). Experimental results show that the pressure gradient in the flow direction decreases and the separation is delayed when the Reynolds number and impingement angle are increased at the same distance ratio. As the diameter ratio decreases with the same impingement angle and Reynolds number, the maximum suction pressure increases, and the pressure gradient in the wall jet flow direction increases. The three-dimensional nature of the surface pressure distribution changes with the flow parameters, which are well explained with three-dimensional flow field measurements in the curved 3D wall jet due to the Coanda effect.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Surface pressure distribution was measured when a circular jet impinges on a cylinder. </LI> <LI> Effects of the impingement angle, Reynolds number, and diameter ratio were examined. </LI> <LI> Pressure gradient in flow direction decreases when the impingement angle increases. </LI> <LI> The three-dimensional nature of the surface pressure changes with the flow parameters. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Metabolic Regulation of Gene Expression by Histone Lysine β-Hydroxybutyrylation

        <P><B>Summary</B></P> <P>Here we report the identification and verification of a β-hydroxybutyrate-derived protein modification, lysine β-hydroxybutyrylation (Kbhb), as a new type of histone mark. Histone Kbhb marks are dramatically induced in response to elevated β-hydroxybutyrate levels in cultured cells and in livers from mice subjected to prolonged fasting or streptozotocin-induced diabetic ketoacidosis. In total, we identified 44 histone Kbhb sites, a figure comparable to the known number of histone acetylation sites. By ChIP-seq and RNA-seq analysis, we demonstrate that histone Kbhb is a mark enriched in active gene promoters and that the increased H3K9bhb levels that occur during starvation are associated with genes upregulated in starvation-responsive metabolic pathways.         A meta-analysis on advantages of peripheral nerve block post-total knee arthroplasty

        Background: Postoperative pain management is crucial for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). There have been many recent clinical trials on post-TKA peripheral nerve block; however, they have reported inconsistent findings. In this meta-analysis, we aimed to comprehensively analyze studies on post-TKA analgesia to provide evidence-based clinical suggestions. Methods: We performed a computer-based query of PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and the Web of Science to retrieve related articles using neurothe following search terms: nerve block, nerve blockade, chemodenervation, chemical neurolysis, peridural block, epidural anesthesia, extradural anesthesia, total knee arthroplasty, total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, and others. After quality evaluation and data extraction, we analyzed the complications, visual analogue scale (VAS) score, patient satisfaction, perioperative opioid dosage, and rehabilitation indices. Evidence was rated using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach. Results: We included 16 randomized controlled trials involving 981 patients (511 receiving peripheral nerve block and 470 receiving epidural block) in the final analysis. Compared with an epidural block, a peripheral nerve block significantly reduced complications. There were no significant between-group differences in the postoperative VAS score, patient satisfaction, perioperative opioid dosage, and rehabilitation indices. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that the peripheral nerve block is superior to the epidural block in reducing complications without compromising the analgesic effect and patient satisfaction. Therefore, a peripheral nerve block is a safe and effective postoperative analgesic method with encouraging clinical prospects.

      • Expression of Proteasome Activator REGγ in Human Laryngeal Carcinoma and Associations with Tumor Suppressor Proteins

        The functional significance of the proteasome activator $REG{\gamma}$ in the regulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis has been recognized. However, pathological contributions to tumor development remain to be elucidated. Both oncogenic proteins and tumor suppressors are targeted by $REG{\gamma}$ for proteasomal degradation. It has been proposed that the role of the $REG{\gamma}$ in the pathogenesis of cancer is cell- and context-specific. In this study, we aimed to explore the potential involvement of $REG{\gamma}$ in laryngeal carcinomas, comparing protein expression in tumor and adjacent tissues by immunohistochemical staining and Western blot analysis. We also characterized the correlation between the expression of $REG{\gamma}$ and the previously identified substrates p53 and p21. We showed that $REG{\gamma}$ was abnormally highly expressed in cancer tissues. Statistical analysis revealed that there was a positive relationship between the level of $REG{\gamma}$ and the expression of p53 and p21. Our study suggests that $REG{\gamma}$ overexpression can facilitate the growth of laryngeal cancer cells.

        Numerical analysis and fluid-solid coupling model test of filling-type fracture water inrush and mud gush

        The geological conditions surrounding the Jijiapo Tunnel of the Three Gorges Fanba Highway project in Hubei Province are very complex. In this paper, a 3-D physical model was carried out to study the evolution process of filling-type fracture water inrush and mud gush based on the conditions of the section located between 16.040 km and 16.042 km of the Jijiapo Tunnel. The 3-D physical model was conducted to clarify the effect of the self-weight of the groundwater level and tunnel excavation during water inrush and mud gush. The results of the displacement, stress and seepage pressure of fracture and surrounding rock in the physical model were analyzed. In the physical model the results of the model test show that the rock displacement suddenly jumped after sustainable growth, rock stress and rock seepage suddenly decreased after continuous growth before water inrushing. Once water inrush occured, internal displacement of filler increased successively from bottom up, stress and seepage pressure of filler droped successively from bottom up, which presented as water inrush and mud gush of filling-type fracture was a evolving process from bottom up. The numerical study was compared with the model test to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the results of the model test.

      • Insulin Resistance Reduces Sensitivity to Cis-Platinum and Promotes Adhesion, Migration and Invasion in HepG2 Cells

        The liver is normally the major site of glucose metabolism in intact organisms and the most important target organ for the action of insulin. It has been widely accepted that insulin resistance (IR) is closely associated with postoperative recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the relationship between IR and drug resistance in liver cancer cells is unclear. In the present study, IR was induced in HepG2 cells via incubation with a high concentration of insulin. Once the insulin-resistant cell line was established, the stability of HepG2/IR cells was further tested via incubation in insulin-free medium for another 72h. Afterwards, the biological effects of insulin resistance on adhesion, migration, invasion and sensitivity to cis-platinum (DDP) of cells were determined. The results indicated that glucose consumption was reduced in insulin-resistant cells. In addition, the expression of the insulin receptor and glucose transportor-2 was downregulated. Furthermore, HepG2/IR cells displayed markedly enhanced adhesion, migration, and invasion. Most importantly, these cells exhibited a lower sensitivity to DDP. By contrast, HepG2/IR cells exhibited decreased adhesion and invasion after treatment with the insulin sensitizer pioglitazone hydrochloride. The results suggest that IR is closely related to drug resistance as well as adhesion, migration, and invasion in HepG2 cells. These findings may help explain the clinical observation of limited efficacy for chemotherapy on a background of IR, which promotes the invasion and migration of cancer cells.
