        Volatile Chemical and Carotenoid Profiles in Watermelons [Citrullus vulgaris (Thunb.) Schrad (Cucurbitaceae)] with Different Flesh Colors

        Twelve watermelon [Citrullus vulgaris (Thunb.)Schrad (Cucurbitaceae)] cultivars with different flesh colors were analyzed by HPLC, GC-FID, and GC-MS for their differences in carotenoid, soluble sugar, organic acid,and flavor. Results showed that all-trans violaxanthin, 9-cis-violaxanthin, and luteoxanthin were the main carotenoid esters in watermelons with yellow flesh. However,watermelons with red flesh were rich in all-trans lycopene and their cis-isomers. High concentrations of β-carotene and pro-lycopenes were found in watermelon with orangeyellow flesh. Large variations in the sucrose concentration were observed among the different watermelons. Sucrose and/or fructose were the dominant sugars, while citric acid and malic acid were the main organic acids in watermelon flesh. Limonene was detected in the watermelon flesh of all investigated genotypes. Interestingly, partial correlation analysis of the chemical concentrations revealed 2 significant (p<0.01) positive correlations between β-ionone and β-carotene, and between (E)-geranyl acetone and prolycopenes

        Xe Distribution in Xe-ion Implanted NaCl Crystal

        Former experimental results show that solid-state alkali-Xe cluster could be formed in xenon-ion-implanted alkali halide crystal. This kind of cluster makes solid state alkali metal-xenon nano-materials potential candidates for preparing UV micro-laser matrix. By means of Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) and TRIM codes, Xe atom distributions are studied in this paper. The results show that Xe was found at a depth of around 250 nm. As xenon concentration increased, the number of metallic Na colloids increased as well. These metallic Na colloids were found in SEM images of our irradiated samples, and the formation of solid-state NaXe clusters in NaCl implanted by 129Xe has been used to explain the results in this paper.         Novel extraction technologies and potential applications of egg yolk proteins

        The high nutritional value and diverse functional properties of egg yolk proteins have led to its widespread use in the fields of food, medicine, and cosmetics. Various extraction methods have been reported to obtain the proteins from egg yolk, however, their utilization is limited due to the relatively low extraction efficiency and/or toxic solvents involved. Several simpler and greener technologies, especially physical fields (ultrasound), have been successfully developed to improve the extraction efficiency. The egg yolk proteins may exert multiple biological activities, enabling them to be a promising tool in improve human health and wellbeing, such as anti-obesity, anti-atherosclerosis, anti-osteoporosis, diagnosis and therapy for SARS-CoV-2 infections. This article summarizes the novel extraction technologies and latest applications of the egg yolk proteins in the recent 5 years, which should stimulate their utilization as health-promoting functional ingredients in foods and other commercial products.
