      • Strengthening Feminist Leadership for Effective and Sustainable Peace Building Process in Myanmar

Mai Aye Aye Aung 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2017 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 학술대회자료집 Vol.2017 No.1

This research highlights the significant role of feminist leadership which requires paying attention to power sharing, authority, and decision making in peace building processes in Myanmar with the view of gender and peace agenda. It argues the need of feminist leadership not just women involvement in peace and reconciliation in Myanmar. Although it is important to increase numbers of women in leadership, feminist leadership is more than leadership style based on female socialization and awareness of gender binary and stereotypes, which believes that men can also be pro-feminist and lead with feminist goals in mind. The distribution of power and seeking democratic relationships are complex goals of feminism that demand that the country attends to look not only on gender, but also to other forms of oppression and privilege because Myanmar people’s life experiences, values, and thoughts reflect the impact of ethnicity, race, class and gender. The need for gender sensitivity to design a lasting peace that will be advantageous to empowering women as decision makers and actors in all areas of peace building is vital for a country like Myanmar with 135 different ethnic groups, excluding other minorities, and religious conflicts that are ongoing along with civil war. Poorness in transparency, accountability and consistency, as well as peace and conflict issues, create a fertile ground for growth in gender justice in the long run in such a country. Therefore, the research questions “How are women strengthening to become feminist leaders for peace process and what are the suitable ways for this progress?” This study aims to explore on acknowledging the role of women as peacemakers and peacebuilders in the community level, regional level, and country level and ensure that women’s needs are addressed. The researcher interviewed women peacebuilders in the national level, who are currently nominated for N-Peace 2016 award. These remarkable women have actively participated in the country’s development, peace, gender, and political fields in the country level. Respondents were approached to complete life stories interview in a convenient area with care which did not interfere with their work or family duties within September 2016. Life stories interview was designed to provide insights of women leadership in peace process. Ethical requirements, including formal approach and confidentially, were ensured. This study raised the requirement of feminist leadership in peace process to fill the gap of gender justice and women empowerment needed in Myanmar. If post-military regime government understands the important roles of women leadership in peace building process and gives sustained support for their efforts, then even the challenge of women leadership for peace and positive peace can become an achievable goal.

Design and Evaluation of LCD Backlight Unit by LED Array Modules

Aung, Aye Thida,Lee, Seung-Min,Yang, Jong-Kyung,Park, Dae-Hee,Lee, Seong-Jin,Lee, Jong-Chan The Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic 2008 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.9 No.3

In this paper, we have designated a 42-inch RGB LED BLU, 80 % above illuminance. A desirable brightness performance was attained, by doing anti-parallel configuration, a fitting of LED's strip distance and a height of the top of LED to the back of the LCD. We get the 85.81 % of the brightness uniformity which has 12.8 mm away from LED's top and LCD's back and 51.41 mm of the same spacing between LED's strip in simulation and 82.24 % in experiment.

        Aye Thida Aung,Jong-Kyung Yang,Seung-Min Lee,Jong-Chan Lee,Dae-Hee Park 한국조명·전기설비학회 2008 조명·전기설비학회논문지 Vol.22 No.11

In this parer, the optical properties of the 54[W] LED module have confirmed by changing the angles of LED modules for street light applications. The angle of LED module changed from the 0[˚] to 6060[˚] varying by 20[˚] as horizontal direction θ₁. Morever, the angle of LED module changed from the 0[˚] to 15[˚] varying by 5[˚] as vertical direction θ₂. As a result of simulation, the average illumination was about 17[lux] and the overall illuminance unifonnity was 0.29 for a 10.39[m] long and 6[m] wide illuminance area at height of 6[m], which is acceptable for street lighting illumination in the Illuminating Engineering Society[IES] standard.

Sodium Nitroprusside Stimulates Growth and Shoot Regeneration in Chrysanthemum

        Muthukrishnan Arun,AUNG HTAY NAING,전수민,TRINH NGOC AI,Thanda Aye,김창길 한국원예학회 2017 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.58 No.1

In this study, we demonstrate that the nitric oxide (NO) donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) improvesplant regeneration in chrysanthemums. Internode explants of three different chrysanthemum cultivars, ‘White ND’,‘White wing × Peach ND’, and ‘Hunt × Lemon ND’, were cultured on shoot induction medium (SIM) containingvarious concentrations of N6–benzyladenine (2.22 or 4.44 μM BA) and SNP (0.83–6.71 μM) individually andin combination. Most combinations of BA and SNP significantly improved the morphogenetic potential of internodeexplants and enhanced shoot regeneration in all three chrysanthemum cultivars compared to treatment with BAalone. The cultivar ‘White wing × Peach ND’ displayed the highest regeneration response (98.3%) and shoot regenerationrate (27.3 shoots/explant) in SIM containing optimal BA (4.44 μM) and SNP (0.83 μM) concentrations within30 days of culture. Individual shoots of 'White wing × Peach ND' were transferred to root induction medium(RIM) containing various concentrations of SNP (0.83–6.71 μM) alone. Shoots rooted in the presence of SNPresulted in healthy plantlets within 30 days of culture with improved root (number of roots/shoot, root length, and fresh weight) and shoot (number of leaves, shoot length, and fresh weight) growth characteristics comparedto the control. In addition, the regeneration procedure described in this study only requires a short duration (60 days)to obtain rooted plantlets from internode explants of chrysanthemums. Our results suggest that supplementationof chrysanthemum regeneration medium with SNP enhances shoot regeneration and improves plant growth, overcoming problems associated with propagation and genetic transformation.

      • Women's health and the use of traditional and complementary and alternative medicine: A case of women with Breast Cancer in Myanmar

( Sangita Karki Kunwor ),( Aye Aye Aung ),최수정,황정혜,한동운 한국모자보건학회 2019 한국모자보건학회 학술대회 연제집 Vol.2019 No.2

Purpose: Globally, the use of traditional, complementary and alternative medicine (TCAM) is highly prevalent among breast cancer patients. Although the high use of TCAM among Myanmar community is well documented and breast cancer is a leading non-communicable disease in Myanmar women, there is no information about the utilization of TCAM among breast cancer patients. The aim of this research is to explore the prevalence and factors predicting for TCAM use among women with breast cancer survivors in Myanmar. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire among 431 women with breast cancer in the cancer department, Yangon General Hospital, Myanmar in 2017. The questionnaire included 41 questions regarding clinical characteristics of breast cancer patients, TCAM use, perceived effectiveness of treatments and sociodemographic characteristics. Differences characteristics between TCAM users and non-users were assessed using the chi-square test. In order to determine the significant predictors of TCAM use, we calculated odd ratios (OR) with multivariable logistic regressions. Results: Among 431 among women with breast cancer who participated in this study, more than two-thirds of respondents 381(65.2%) reported the use of one or more TCAM therapies for breast cancer. Regarding TCAM modalities, mind-body therapies; praying is the leading TCAM modality, followed by cow’s urine therapy, herbal products, traditional Myanmar medicine (oral). Main sources of information of TCAM are family members and friends. Respondents’ age, education, employment status, family members are the influencing sociodemographic factors for TCAM use. Stage of cancer, duration of diagnosis and treatment, satisfaction with conventional breast cancer treatment are the main clinical predicting factors of TCAM use. Nearly half of TCAM users did not disclose about TCAM use to their physician. Conclusion: A significant amount of women with breast cancer are using CAM during the treatment of their disease, despite the lack of safety or efficacy data and often without any supervision from a knowledgeable practitioner. Further research in this field may allow women with breast cancer more options in treating common conditions of breast cancer and improve women’s health.
