Understanding of Gerontechnology Acceptance by Older Hong Kong Chinese
( Alan Chan ) 한국감성과학회 2014 춘계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.-
The purpose of this study was to develop and test a Senior Technology Acceptance Model (STAM) aimed at understanding the acceptance of gerontechnology by older Hong Kong Chinese people. The proposed STAM extended previous technology acceptance models and theories by adding age-related health and ability characteristics of older people. The proposed STAM was empirically tested using a cross-sectional questionnaire survey with a sample of 1,012 seniors aged 55 and over in Hong Kong. The result showed that STAM was strongly supported and could explain 68% of the variance in the use of gerontechnology. For older Hong Kong Chinese, individual attributes, which include age, gender, education, gerontechnology self-efficacy and anxiety, and health and ability characteristics, as well as facilitating conditions explicitly and directly affected technology acceptance. These were better predictors of gerontechnology usage behaviour than the conventionally used attitudinal factors (usefulness and ease of use).

Little is known of the lung cellular immunophenotypes in patients with non-tuberculous mycobacterial lung disease (NTM-LD). Flow-cytometric analyses for the major myeloid and lymphoid cell subsets were performed in less- and more-diseased areas of surgically resected lungs from six patients with NTM-LD and two with Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung disease (PsA-LD). Lymphocytes, comprised mainly of NK cells, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, and B cells, accounted for ~60% of all leukocytes, with greater prevalence of T and B cells in more-diseased areas. In contrast, fewer neutrophils were found with decreased number in more-diseased areas. Compared to NTM-LD, lung tissues from patients with PsA-LD demonstrated relatively lower numbers of T and B lymphocytes but similar numbers of NK cells. While this study demonstrated a large influx of lymphocytes into the lungs of patients with chronic NTM-LD, further analyses of their phenotypes are necessary to determine the significance of these findings.

The polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) needs purified hydrogen fuel from hydrocarbon reforming and water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. Concentration of CO should be 10 ppm level to avoid poisoning of the platinum anode electrode. For this, preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide (PROX) reaction is essential. In this study, a novel pretreatment technique was applied to a conventional Pt/g- Al2O3 catalyst. Oxygen-treated, water-treated, and conventional Pt/g-Al2O3 catalyst were prepared and their performances in the PROX reaction were investigated in a simulated hydrogen-rich reaction conditions. Our results showed that catalytic activity of the oxygen-treated 5% Pt/g-Al2O3 catalyst for the CO conversion increased dramatically especially at the low temperature below 100 8C. The enhancement is attributed to the formation of well-dispersed small Pt particles.

This study investigated the optimum positions and warning foreperiod for auditory signals with an experiment on spatial stimulus-response (S-R) compatibility effects. The auditory signals were presented at the front-right, front-left, rear-right, and rear-left positions from the subjects, whose reaction times and accuracies at different spatial mapping conditions were examined. The results showed a significant spatial stimulus-response compatibility effect in which faster and more accurate responses were obtained in the transversely and longitudinally compatible condition while the worst performance was found when spatial stimulus-response compatibility did not exist in either orientation. It was also shown that the transverse compatibility effect was found significantly stronger than the longitudinal compatibility effect. The effect of signal position was found significant and post hoc test suggested that the emergent warning alarm should be placed on the front-right position for right-handed users. The warning foreperiod prior to the signal presentation was shown to influence reaction time and a warning foreperiod of 3 s is found optimal for the 2-choice auditory reaction task.
