Abstract

The synthesis, characterization and (TD)-DFT calculations of the electrochemical and photophysical properties of novel ethynylene-analogues of hemicurcuminoids are described. These dyes are both emissive in solution and in the solid state. While compounds that emit through an efficient charge transfer (CT) state show solvatochromic behaviour associated with low fluorescence quantum yields, those lacking of donor groups show high fluorescence quantum yields of 70–80%, in solution. The latter dyes also present the advantage to emit in the solid state in the visible region with fluorescence quantum yields up to 23%. Their condensed phase spectrum can be bathochromically shifted to the near infrared region (742 nm) by appending a strong donor group.

Highlights

Synthesis of new fluorophores based on hemicurcuminoid boron difluoride.

Photophysical study reveals strong emission of the dyes not containing charge transfer states.

Fluorescence properties of dyes in their condensed phase show aggregation induced emission.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

New data on winter crane flies (Diptera: Trichoceridae) of Korea with description of a new species
PETRAŠ,I16a,NAS, ANDRIUS,PODENAS, SIGITAS Magnolia Press 2017 Zootaxa Vol.4311 No.4

Species of Trichoceridae Rondani known to occur on the Korean Peninsula are reviewed; eight of these are recorded for Korea for the first time. Trichocera (Saltrichocera) sapporensis Alexander, 1935 and T. (S.) maculipennis pictipennis Alexander, 1930 are proposed as synonyms of T. (S). maculipennis punctipennis Brunetti, 1912 which is transferred to a subspecific rank. A new species-Trichocera (Saltrichocera) latipons sp. nov. is described.

Incorporation of spatial autocorrelation improves soil–landform modeling at A and B horizons

Abstract

Research has shown that the performance of soil–landform models would improve if the effects of spatial autocorrelation were properly accounted for; however, it remains elusive whether the level of improvement would be predictable, based on the degree of spatial autocorrelation in the model variables. We evaluated this problem using 11 soil variables acquired from the A and B horizons along a hillslope of Žofínský Prales in the Czech Republic. The results showed that, with no exception, there were increases in R2 and decreases in the Akaike information criterion (AIC), residual autocorrelation, and root-mean-square errors (RMSEs), after incorporating the spatial filters extracted by spatial eigenvector mapping into non-spatial regression models. Furthermore, the improvement of the model was positively proportional to the degree of spatial autocorrelation, inherent in the soil variables. That is, there were strikingly linear and significant relationships, in which strongly autocorrelated soil variables (i.e., having a high Moran's I value) exhibited greater increases in R2 and decreases in AIC, residual autocorrelation, and RMSEs than their more weakly autocorrelated counterparts. These findings indicate that the degree of spatial autocorrelation present in soil properties can serve as a direct indicator for how much the performance of a traditional non-spatial soil–landform model would be enhanced, by explicitly taking into consideration the presence of spatial autocorrelation. More generally, our results potentially imply that the need for and benefit from incorporating spatial effects in geopedological modeling proportionally increases as the soil property of interest is more spatially structured (i.e., landform variables alone cannot capture soil spatial variability).

Highlights

Soil spatial variability was modeled using landform variables in a temperate forest.

In this regression, we included spatial filters as additional independent variables.

This inclusion improved the performance of the original non-spatial approach.

Spatial autocorrelation of soil variables predicted the degree of such improvement.

Abstract

This paper deals with a small punch test and ductile failure prediction of austenitic stainless steel 316L. Comprehensive investigation of fracture surfaces was conducted as well as examination of δ-ferrite and σ-phase present in the material in order to reveal the reason of occurrence of nonstandard type of fracture. Three phenomenological ductile fracture criteria were selected for comparative simulations regarding the prediction of crack initiation and propagation during the SPT. These criteria were calibrated by using the fracture tests of smooth cylindrical specimens, notched cylindrical specimens, notched tube specimens and cylinders with spherical recess. The whole material model including the fracture criteria with von Mises plasticity and element deletion technique for simulation of the crack initiation was implemented by using the user subroutine Vectorised User MATerial into the commercial finite element code of Abaqus. Finally, the simulation results with three ductile fracture criteria are compared and discussed based on the experimental results. Only one of the failure criteria captured the displacement at fracture correctly.

Highlights

Wide range of stress states is experimentally described for AISI 316L.

Detailed study of fracture surfaces produced by penetration tests.

Non-standard cracking is observed due to ferrite phase.

Uncoupled ductile fracture criteria are calibrated for austenitic stainless steel.

Double Bent Crystal Monochromator for High Resolution Neutron Powder Diffraction
Mikula, P.,Vrá,na, M.,Š,aroun, J.,Seong, B.S.,Woo, W. Cambridge University Press 2013 POWDER DIFFRACTION Vol.28 No.2

Recent results of focusing and reflectivity properties of the dispersive double-bent-crystal monochromator have shown that it could be succesfully used in high resolution neutron diffraction experiment. By using a standard polycrystalline sample of α-Fe, the resolution of the diffraction performance in the vicinity of the scattering angle 2θS = 90o for the neutron wavelength λ= 0.162 nm was tested in detail. It has been found that for thin (1.3 mm) bent second crystal the angular resolution represented by FWHM of diffraction profiles was 1x10−3 rad for 211 and 200 reflections and about 3x10−3 rad for 220 reflection.
