From the age of Koguryo until the end of the Koryo dynasty (A.D. 1C-14C) woman's social life was free, and marriage was made in the form of free love, accordingly divorce and remarriage were often occurred. But during the Yi dynasty Chu-hsi Confucianism became the principle of reign. It required every woman to be loyal and obeident to each family. In this doctrine,. $quot;woman must not serve more than one husband$quot; was the starting point and the basic ground for moral edification, and the imperative law by which they were strongly urged and enforced. The going out of doors of women and social intercourse between man and woman were strictly restrained and also sexual promiscuity was severely punished, while the woman of chastity was praised and received many privilages. The decisive prohibition against remarriage was the worst law, which defies comparison with other countries in the East: descendants of the remarried woman were refused entrance into the civil service. Thus, parents boasting of their family or villagers boasting of their Confucian tradition defended the prohibition against remarriage very cruelly. At length, the woman who lost her husband had to remain a widow throughout her whole life. In every class this was changed into the custom, so that Korea became a nation of chaste women. But in the middle of the 19th century when Tonghak thought arose, they not only opposed the feudalistic inequality and insisted upon human equality but also advocated women's remarriage for the sake of women's rights. That was the first call for the emancipation of woman that sprouted from the inner part of the ancient feudalistic society.

This research was performed to investigate the generation and physico-chemical characteristics of municipal solid wastes in the east coast of gangwon. The results were as follows:<br/> ⅰ) The generation rate of G city and Y gun were 0.187-0.384 ㎏/cap/d and 0.136-0.259 ㎏/cap/d. Apparent density of G city and Y gun were 137.9-191.9 g/L and 157.3-238.3 g/L, respectively. ⅱ) The wastes consisted of 76.1-97.5% of combustibles and 2.5-23.9% of incombustibles in G city. And the wastes consisted of 73.7-98.6% of combustibles and 1.4-26.3% of incombustibles in Y gun. Most of municipal solid wastes are composed of food, paper, and vinyl-plastics waste. Water content of commercial area, agricultural resident, detached resident, apartment area, school zone were 42.5-45.9, 37.6-43.4, 32.4-38.4, 29.3-32.3, 6.8-26.9%, respectively. ⅲ) The low heating value of G city and Y gun were 1,125.5-2,540.7 kcal/㎏, 1,104.4-2,062.3 kcal/㎏, and school and apartment area were higher than commercial area.

Background: Evaluation of Human papilloma virus (HPV) and its association with promoter methylation of candidate genes, p53 and Aurora A in esophageal cancer. Materials and Methods: One hundred forty-one esophageal tissue samples from different pathologies were evaluated for HPV infection by PCR, while the promoter methylation status of p53 and Aurora A was assessed by methylation-specific restriction based PCR assay. Statistical analyses were performed with MedCalc and MDR software. Results: Based on endoscopy and histopathology, samples were categorized: cancers (n=56), precancers (n=7), esophagitis (n=19) and normals (n=59). HPV infection was found to be less common in cancers (19.6%), whereas its prevalence was relatively high in precancers (71.4%), esophagitis (57.8%) and normals (45.7%). p53 promoter methylation did not show any significant difference between cancer and normal tissues, whereas Aurora A promoter methylation demonstrated significant association with disease (p=0.00016, OR:5.6452, 95%CI:2.18 to 14.6) when compared to normals. Aurora A methylation and HPV infection was found in a higher percentages of precancer (66.6%), esophagitis (54.5%) and normal (45.2%) when compared to cancers (14.2%). Conclusions: Aurora A promoter methylation is significantly associated with esophageal cancer, but the effect of HPV infection on this epigenetic alteration is not significant. However MDR analysis showed that the hypostatic effect of HPV was nullified when the cases had Aurora methylation and tobacco exposure. Further HPV sub-typing may give an insight into its reduced prevalence in esophageal cancer verses normal tissue. However, with the present data it is difficult to assign any significant role to HPV in the etiopathology of esophageal cancer.

To maintain reliable and stable power grid the Power Dispatch Center consists of two sections, primary and backup centers. It is necessary that the Backup Dispatch Center stay away from the primary center in case of emergency like terror and natural disaster. The Backup Dispatch Center operates transmission lines outside of Seoul metropolitan area and could perform main center's role when primary center lose control. Without building a duplex Power IT system, it would be doubtful to operate both centers efficiently. This paper deals with primary and backup Power IT systems which run two Dispatch Centers and focuses on expectation effects of its duplex system and transferring the Backup system.

$quot;송과체 뇌종양에 의한 중추성 요붕증은 상당히 드문 것으로 알려져 있다. 이들 종양은 뇌척수액을 따라 파종하며, 중추성 요붕증과 송과체 뇌종양 발생 사이에 잠복기가 있으나 조기 진단시 방사선 요법 또는 항암 화학요법으로 완치가 가능한 질환이다. 저자들은 송과체 배세포종이 뇌척수액을 따라 뇌하수체 경으로 파종되어 중추성 요붕증으로 발현한 환자에서 방사선 치료전 항암 화학요법과 방사선 치료로 성공적으로 치유한 1예를 경험하였기에 문헌고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다.$quot; $quot;Central diabetes insipidus caused by pineal gland neoplasm is rare. Here, we describe a case of central diabetes insipidus and pineal germinoma with seeding to pituitary stalk along CSF pathway. A 27 year-old male patient was admitted due to polyuria, polydipsia, headache, vomiting, diplopia, and decreased visual acuity for recent two months. Urine osmolality measured after water deprivation was below 100mOsm/kg. However, urine osmolality increasd above 300 mOsm/kg with pitressin administration. Brain MRI showed a 2cm sized mass with seeding into pituitary stalk along CSF in pineal region. Surgical biopsy revealed pineal germinoma. Two cycles of chemotherapy with etoposide and cis-platin were done followed by brain irradiation(2,500cGy). Follow up brain MRI after second chemotherapy showed complete remission. The patient had no neurologic and endocrinologic deficit after the treatment.(Korean J Med 59:305-309, 2000)$quot;
