The present study deals with numerical flow analysis to investigate the effect of sweep and lean on the performance characteristics of a partial admission supersonic turbine. The flow analysis was performed for three different angles. The angles of sweep and lean are 5°, 10°, 15°. The results of the flow analysis showed that the efficiency is improved as the sweep angle is increased. However, a sweep angle of 5° was less effective in comparison with the baseline model. The total pressure loss was reduced as the lean angle is increased, but the total to static efficiency was decreased.

Vol.23 No.1

This study examines the impersonality of the artist evinced in James Joyce`s Finnegans Wake I.5. The ideal artist as expressed by Stephen in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man “like the God of the creation, remains within or behind or beyond or above his handiwork, invisible, refined out of existence, indifferent, paring his fingernails.” Finnegans Wake seems to illustrate the hidden author remote from the sufferings of the reader, a reader lost in his vain efforts at the search for the meanings of the almost unreadable text. Joyce`s experiment in his last work can be seen as nearly impersonal sentence combinations and variation beyond all point of view. We cannot find the traces of the author on the surface. He suggests that it is not himself, but somebody else who wrote this work. Further, he implies that his voice is hidden behind multiple voices. That is why his work can be said to be plagiarized. He picks up the words and sentences of other people and pastes them in his work without quotation marks. As “the last word in stolentelling,” Finnegans Wake is the resulting rubbish of others` words. However, these efforts at impersonality paradoxically make the figure of Joyce all the more conspicuous. Pretending to be refined out of existence and to pare his fingernails, the artist is actually involved in shaping our view of his work. Thus, it is not surprising for the author to say that the existence of the author is undeniable and that this “chaosmos” has a sort of order or structure despite its seeming chaos. Through the strategy of impersonality, Joyce seems to succeed in drawing the reader`s attention to his position as a modernist writer, and to the question of intertextuality characteristic of his works.

Analysis of bivariate recurrent event data with zero inflation

Kim, Taeun,Kim, Yang-Jin The Korean Statistical Society 2020 Communications for statistical applications and me Vol.27 No.1

Recurrent event data frequently occur in clinical studies, demography, engineering reliability and so on (Cook and Lawless, The Statistical Analysis of Recurrent Events, Springer, 2007). Sometimes, two or more different but related type of recurrent events may occur simultaneously. In this study, our interest is to estimate the covariate effect on bivariate recurrent event times with zero inflations. Such zero inflation can be related with susceptibility. In the context of bivariate recurrent event data, furthermore, such susceptibilities may be different according to the type of event. We propose a joint model including both two intensity functions and two cure rate functions. Bivariate frailty effects are adopted to model the correlation between recurrent events. Parameter estimates are obtained by maximizing the likelihood derived under a piecewise constant hazard assumption. According to simulation results, the proposed method brings unbiased estimates while the model ignoring cure rate models gives underestimated covariate effects and overestimated variance estimates. We apply the proposed method to a set of bivariate recurrent infection data in a study of child patients with leukemia.

Vol.59 No.11

This paper presents the sensor location and step estimation algorithm for personal navigation system (PNS). PNS has the disadvantage in that the position of the sensor must be fixed on a human body. Three-axis acceleration sensor is used to solve the disadvantage and to consider the real situation. We simplify the measurement data by using the band pass filter, witch It has the advantage in the detection of characteristic point. Through the detected characteristic points, it is possible to setup the parameter for the pattern detection. Depending on the sensor location, the parameters have the different type of noise covariance. Particularly, when the position of the sensor is changed, the impulse noise shows up. Considering the noise, we apply the recursive least square algorithm using the variable forgetting factors, which can classify the sensor location based on the estimated parameters. We performed the experiment for the verification of the proposed algorithm in the various environments. Through the experimental results, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified.

21 Vol.12 No.4

The purpose of this study was to structure teaching and lesson plan on human rights education that was added to the international marriage guidance program targeting the national petitioners (=spouses) by the Ministry of Justice since March, 2018. The 4-hour long international marriage guidance program’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd teaching and lesson plans were studied and developed in 2014, however, the 4th plan on human rights only touches on the gist of the human rights education. The research method was based on reports from the Ministry of Justice and the National Human Rights Commission and existing development data. Based on the experience of a researcher currently working as a human rights education instructor in this program, another expert instructor and one in charge were verified. This study is meaningful as it attempted to establish a detailed educational content on human rights within the international marriage guidance program. However, the lack of more verification by the professional educators on human rights education in this program remains a limitation. Future studies must observe the actual changes in perspectives of the students that took the human rights class and participated in the international marriage guidance program.

Vol.22 No.3

Until now critics in their study on “Scylla and Charybdis” have mentioned Caliban in passing or identified Stephen with Caliban in specific passages. But it seems that Joyce extensively identifies Stephen with Caliban explicitly and implicitly in this episode. This study will examine how Stephen as Caliban rebels against Shakespeare/Prospero`s empire. The understanding of Stephen`s theory of Shakespeare heavily depends on his specific audience. They are the Revivalists, who are Anglo-Irish. Thus they could not be said to represent the perspectives or the interests of the native population. The formation of the Revivalists` perspective on Shakespeare was considerably influenced by Edward Dowden, who was English-oriented. He is similar to Mr Deasy in that the former was a staunch Irish Unionist organizer, invested in English cultural and military imperialism. As Mr Deasy was racist and Anglo-supremacist, so Dowden believed in racial and cultural hierarchy in the Empire. It is Interesting to see that Mr Deasy calls Stephen a “fenian,” for Stephen reads Shakespeare through a fenian lens, resisting Dowden`s point of view. On the other hand, Dowden sees Shakespeare from an imperialist/Unionist viewpoint. “Usurpation” summarizes Stephen`s current situation. His nation and his key to the Martello tower were usurped. It is worth noting here that Dowden diagnoses the usurpation of Caliban`s rights by Prospero as justifiable. Caliban is the colonial subject and can represent Ireland, Irish natives, fenians, and Stephen. For Dowden, the rights of chaotic Caliban should be usurped. Unionists will be of the same opinion about the supposedly more emotional Irish Catholics. Stephen identifies Revivalism as a new variant on an old theme of usurpation. Ironically, even though the Anglo-Irish are committed to the nationalist cause. they drive out the native Irish. He is again classified as a “wild Irish”/Caliban, a barbarian as the other. His theory of Shakespeare is the revenge of a usurped Caliban. Stephen`s critique of Shakespeare is Caliban`s against Prospero and his colonial ideology. Stephen reads Shakespeare as a jingoist whose work stoked the fire of British imperialism. Stephen links Shakespeare directly to the Boer War. The bard`s pageants and histories show his extravagant enthusiasm for the glories of British imperial expansion. Stephen`s comment on the Boer War also shows the brutality of the imperialism with which Shakespeare is identified. His historicized reading of Shakespeare is opposed to the Revivalists` idealization of the bard in the historical void. Stephen attacks Dowden`s theory of Shakespearean reconciliation by saying that there must have been first sundering. Thus, he collapses the pretension that Prospero, imperialist master, can impose poetic justice on Caliban. More important, by putting emphasis on separation, Stephen seems to rebel against the Revivalists/Unionists who favor the continuation of the union between Ireland and the empire. As a fenian/Caliban, Stephen calls for the separation of Ireland from England. Irish Caliban feels unfairly usurped of a territory rightfully his, and he dreams of revenge against his master/imperialist. As Caliban rejects Prospero`s sovereign language in his first revolt against his master, Stephen rejects imperialist discourse of Shakespeare/Dowden. He learned, like Caliban, “how to curse” his masters. For Dowden, Shakespeare indicates the cultural authority of the Empire, before which the colonies should be submissive. But Stephen aspires to be his equal as a writer, as he implies by equating Dublin with Stratford.

Vol.28 No.2

In “Scylla and Charybdis” and “Cyclops” of Ulysses, Joyce openly criticizes or parodies the Irish Literary Revival and Gael nationalism. The chapter, “Aeolus” is also covertly critical of this movement. However, compared with the other two episodes, “Aeolus” has not been extensively studied in terms of this theme. This paper examines how “Aeolus” presents critiques of this movement. Dawson’s essay praises the nature of Ireland by excessively beautifying it, like the Irish revivalists who mystify the Irish past and sanctify her soil. His “peerless panorama of Ireland’s portfolio” is contrasted with Stephen’s realistic view of the Dublin city. MacHugh’s idea of “spiritual” Irish, as contrasted with materialistic British, also idealizes his nation by rationalizing the failure of the Irish people in the present life. Joyce would never have accepted Taylor’s speech on the revival of the Irish language, even though the writer was impressed by Taylor’s suggestion that the Irish should not succumb to British domination. This is confirmed by the parody of this speech in the “Ithaca” chapter; the speech is demystified and will be emulated by Stephen’s Parable. MacHugh’s claims about the spiritual nature of the Irish are also challenged by this parody. While Taylor idealizes the heroic story of Moses, Stephen realistically describes the petty bourgeois life in his parable. If Taylor’s speech reflects the revivalist’s tendency to idealize and inflate the past and country, the parable shows the present and the heart of the city in its historical context. Stephen deflates, demythologizes, and desacralizes the romantic notion of the Revival as well as Taylor’s speech. Poor Old Woman/Ireland idealized by Literary Revival is reduced to a prostitute who readily gives her body to the conqueror of their country, thus revealing the reality of the colonized country. In fact, Joyce has kept this critical attitude toward the Revival throughout his career, by writing on the lower middle class of Dublin with the style of “scrupulous meanness”; that is, with precision.
