        부신무형성증을 동반한 단안구증 1 례

        The term `cyclopia` is a fetal ocular anomaly of a bilateral symmetrical malformation of the head in which there is absent or poorly developed median structures. It would be more inclusively defined that anomaly in which the eyes are closely adjacent as to lie within a single orbit. The cyclopic monster presented here was still-born from 27 year old woman. The baby was delivery in 27 weeks of gestation and the mother had no history of durg ingestion during pregnancy. The baby presented the malformation of the head consisting of single orbital cavity in the midline containing one eyeball with a cornea, a pupil, no nose. The skull showed a single fathened anterior cranical fossa absence of crista galli and narrow sella turcica. The brain presented drastically malformed cerebral hemisphere showing pan-cake appearance . Both cerebral hemispheres are fused together in the midline to form a globular mass. The ventral surface shows no olfactory bulbs or tracts, a small globular pons and unusual shaped medulla with prominent inferior olivary complex. The dorsal survace shows a small opening of middle ventricle, abnormally prominent midbrain and obvious aqueduct. Additionally there was bilateral agenesis of adrenal gland.

        Implications and limitations of cellular reprogramming for psychiatric drug development

        Human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) derived from somatic cells of patients have opened possibilities for in vitro modeling of the physiology of neural (and other) cells in psychiatric disease states. Issues in early stages of technology development include (1) establishing a library of cells from adequately phenotyped patients, (2) streamlining laborious, costly hiPSC derivation and characterization, (3) assessing whether mutations or other alterations introduced by reprogramming confound interpretation, (4) developing efficient differentiation strategies to relevant cell types, (5) identifying discernible cellular phenotypes meaningful for cyclic, stress induced or relapsing–remitting diseases, (6) converting phenotypes to screening assays suitable for genome-wide mechanistic studies or large collection compound testing and (7) controlling for variability in relation to disease specificity amidst low sample numbers. Coordination of material for reprogramming from patients well-characterized clinically, genetically and with neuroimaging are beginning, and initial studies have begun to identify cellular phenotypes. Finally, several psychiatric drugs have been found to alter reprogramming efficiency in vitro, suggesting further complexity in applying hiPSCs to psychiatric diseases or that some drugs influence neural differentiation moreso than generally recognized. Despite these challenges, studies utilizing hiPSCs may eventually serve to fill essential niches in the translational pipeline for the discovery of new therapeutics.

        양막대증후군 2 례

        저자들은 다발성 기형아와 두부 및 안면부 기형아 2례를 양막내 증후군에 속한다고 생각되어 문헌 고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. The amniotic band syndrome refers to the infrequent occurrence of congential deformities, presumably due to fetal entanglement in strands of ruptured amniotic sac. In spite of it`s rare incidence, it`s clinical presentation and prognosis are so profound that deserve to attention to appropriate diagnosis and genetic counseling. We reported two cases of amniotic band syndrome. First case revealed multiple congenital anomalies including bilateral temporal bone defect, cerebral herniation with septation, both cleft lips. left complete cleft palate,etc. Second case revealed anencephaly, protruding eyeball, low set ears and grotesque face.

        Lean mass and peak bone mineral density

        Objectives: The association between body composition parameters and peak bone mineral density is not well documented. The aim of this study is to assess the relative contributions of lean mass and fat mass on peak bone mineral density (BMD). Methods: The study involved 416 women and 334 men aged between 20 and 30 years who were participants in the population-based Vietnam Osteoporosis Study. Whole body composition parameters (eg, fat mass and lean mass) and BMD at the lumbar spine and femoral neck were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The association between lean mass and fat mass and BMD was analyzed by the linear regression model using the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO). Results: Peak BMD in men was higher than women, and the difference was more pronounced at the femoral neck (average difference: 0.123 g/cm2; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.105–0.141 g/cm2) than at the lumbar spine (average difference 0.019 g/cm2; 95% CI, 0.005–0.036 g/cm2). Results of LASSO regression indicated that lean mass was the only predictor of BMD for either men or women. Each kilogram increase in lean mass was associated with ∼0.01 g/cm2 increase in BMD. Lean mass alone explained 16% and 36% of variation in lumbar spine and femoral neck BMD, respectively. Conclusions: Lean mass, not fat mass, is the main determinant of peak bone mineral density. This finding implies that good physical activity during adulthood can contribute to the maximization of peak bone mass during adulthood.

      • Garlic Phytocompounds Possess Anticancer Activity by Specifically Targeting Breast Cancer Biomarkers - an in Silico Study

        Background: Breast cancer (BC) is a serious lifestyle disease. There are several prognostic biomarkers like nuclear receptors whose over-expression is associated with BC characteristics. These biomarkers can be blocked by compounds with anti-cancer potential but selection must be made on the basis of no adverse side effects. This study is focused on finding of compounds from a plant source garlic. Materials and Methods: Twenty compounds from garlic and five targets considered involved in BC were retrieved from Pubchem database and Protein Data Bank respectively. They were docked using Accelrys Discovery Studio (DS) 4.0. The compounds which showed interaction were checked for drug likeliness. Results: Docking studies and ADMET evaluation revealed twelve compounds to be active against the targets. All the compounds displayed highly negative dock scores which indicated good interactions. Conclusions: The results of this study should help researchers and scientists in the pharmaceutical field to identify drugs based on garlic.

      • Plant Phenolics Ferulic Acid and P-Coumaric Acid Inhibit Colorectal Cancer Cell Proliferation through EGFR Down-Regulation

        Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) or bowel cancer is one of the most important cancer diseases, needing serious attention. The cell surface receptor gene human epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) may have an important role in provoking CRC. In this pharmaceutical era, it is always attempted to identify plant-based drugs for cancer, which will have less side effects for human body, unlike the chemically synthesized marketed drugs having serious side effects. So, in this study the authors tried to assess the activity of two important plant compounds, ferulic acid (FA) and p-coumaric acid (pCA), on CRC. Materials and Methods: FA and pCA were tested for their cytotoxic effects on the human CRC cell line HCT 15 and also checked for the level of gene expression of EGFR by real time PCR analysis. Positive results were confirmed by in silico molecular docking studies using Discovery Studio (DS) 4.0. The drug parallel features of the same compounds were also assessed in silico. Results: Cytotoxicity experiments revealed that both the compounds were efficient in killing CRC cells on a controlled concentration basis. In addition, EGFR expression was down-regulated in the presence of the compounds. Docking studies unveiled that both the compounds were able to inhibit EGFR at its active site. Pharmacokinetic analysis of these compounds opened up their drug like behaviour. Conclusions: The findings of this study emphasize the importance of plant compounds for targeting diseases like CRC.

      • 다중프로세서 태스크 스케줄링 알고리즘

        본 논문은 유전자 알고리즘(Genetic Algorithms)을 이용하여 다중프로세서(multiprocessor) 환경에서 작업(task)들을 스케쥴링(scheduling)할때 새로운 교차(crossover) 연산자인 4-stranded crossover를 제안하여 전체적인 성능향상을 보여준다. 4-stranded crossover는 Goldberg[3] 등이 제안한 dominance/diploidy 개념의 확장으로 볼 수 있다. 이것은 탐색공간에서의 무작위적이고 확률적인 선택 방식에 지식 기반의 제어를 추가한 것이다. 그러나 이러한 인위적인 후손(offspring)의 결정은 개체(chromosome 또는 string)를 선택(selection 또는 reproduction)할때 다양성을 제약하는 요인으로 작용할 수도 있으므로 유전자 알고리즘이 지역 극대 또는 극소(local optima)로 수렴될 위험성을 갖고 있다. 이러한 local optima 문제의 극복은 교차될 프로세서 상대(crossover mate)의 선택에 임의성을 부여함으로서 가능해진다. 즉 스케줄링에서는 string 내부의 각 task 사이에 우선순위가 존재하는데 이러한 제약들을 만족시키면서 교차 상대 프로세서를 임의로 선택하게 함으로써 local optima의 방지효과를 얻을 수 있다.

        In this study, through the combined effort and collaboration of 8 engineering education departments, teaching-learning processes and models were reviewed, and printed and bound student manuals developed on 120 different tasks and subjects. Audio-visual supportive material, already in use in laboratories, was added to form a complete teaching-learning package. In addition to promoting the maximum use of the newly acquired equipment, this study will also contribute to the development of laboratory practice, the in-service training of technical high schools teachers and help in the development of their own instructional program.
